The inclusion of the lethal infusion spell on the starting necro book has helped their survival, though. I'll grant you that. Plus it's fun to whack tough things with a club of draining.

Unless you get to be a lucky bastard like I once did and find a dagger of draining on level one. :V

As for dealing with imps, it depends on what type they are. Red imps are crushed by Pain, and Iron imps are easily beaten so long as you stay out of Melee, White imps take a few skeleton meatshields while you Pain them to death, and I've not found a way to beat Shadow imps at low levels.
You are mistaken. Imps, as all demons, have negative energy resistance, and thus can't be pained or drained out. Hence the problem.
What. I'm glad my necros never last long enough to meet imps then.

Of course, there's always the trusty darts on hand.

Or just avoid the imps, which is incredibly easy to do when you find stairs.

Or play necro like me and carry tons of corpses for summon spam.

Corpses rot away. And you can't keep most corpses following you around because almost all are too slow.

Spriggan Venom Mages all day. Came on some kinda gnoll complex, lured em out and destroyed them. Also got the book of summoning, cantrips, and stalking. Too bad Gastronok one shotted me after I went down some stairs, I was doing pretty well.

You could just move around a bit slower.  Like the Mummy Summoner's "Step-summon-step-recharge-step-summon" routine.

Currently on a green draconian transmuter. I'm at lair 5 without a god still because I dunno if I can face a god's wrath when I switch to jivya. Almost died a few times already, stupid rupert.

The thing that has always ended my necros is the risen melee units like Giants. None of your stuff works on them, and they just demolish most of your summoned units.

Oh, about 2 waves in, the hostile creatures stopped moving, so I was able to waltz around and kill them all. Until I could no longer get meat chopped up due to fucking enemies everywhere, and thus starved.

I just found my first ever rune of zot. The swamp one.

I think a major factor in this success was my tendence to perform expeditious retreats at the SLIGHTEST hint of trouble with this character, instead of rushing forward spells blazing.

EDIT: And for breaking my own rule I was just YASD'ed by an electric eel :(

I've not been able to really play casters so far. The best chars I have ran use no skills whatsoever, save from those given by my god. I really find it hard to chose when to cast and when to use melee, and casting usually either kills things nearly instantenously, giving me no XP for my weapon of choice, or it deals nearly nothing and then I have to rely on my sword anyway.

Does magic get very powerful later?
