Do you have a grudge against that wiki, or what? I'm not trying to figure out information like attk calcs and what not. More like "gee, what powers does X god offer?" Yeesh.

Well even that isn't always up to date.

I don't have a grudge, it's just that the wiki is a bizarre mish-mash of content that's current as of any version between now and, say, 0.5 or even earlier.

If you're wondering what powers a certain god has, you're probably better off with the learndb anyway, especially if you're playing trunk.

Seriously, I go to the Stone Soup IRC channel, and the wiki is basically a running joke there.

Eh? What's the stone soup channel?

Also, what's the best class for a Ar? I'm running 7.2. I've been using Vps, but I have a hunch if I use a species other than Vps, I'll have a better chance of surviving to Nemlex's alter.

It's ##crawl on irc.freenode.org.

Why vampires for artificer? They have -1 evocations apt.

DDs have really good evocations, but healing is a problem. Maybe kobolds?

They can save food for decks of wonder. <3

Only problem is I've only survived to get to join Nemlex once. Ever. I'm really bad at roguelikes. :(

Run a Spriggan Assassin. Artificer seems like a good fit for Nemelex shenanigans, but the evocations you gain from relying on the rod of smiting or whatever rod it is doesn't make up for their frailty. It's a powerful weapon, but straight magic is much more reliable, or straight combat, at least till you get to the temple.

That being said, Spriggan Enchanter is considered, at least it was, the most powerful combo in the game. Might want to give that a try with Nemelex.

I've tried a Spriggan Enchanter. It didn't control right for me. I just didn't get enough MP to constantly be Ensorcaling people.

I find it useful to turn off everything but stabbing and spell casting in the early game (until stabbing is at 6 and hibernation is hungerless), that usually helps with the MP issue, the other thing is don't be afraid to use invisibility. It's great to be able to drop groups of monsters without them waking up. I tend to go down stairs invisible to.

I tried a spriggan too. I was doing dang well as an air-elementalist, and then I decided to delve into magic I wasn't too good at. I figured, "Hey, what can go wrong?"

After two tries of my new spell, I get this message: "You feel very sick."

And then...
"You feel very sick"
"You feel very sick"
"You feel sick."
"You feel very sick."

It went on until my health was almost gone, when I at once began quaffing unknown potions in an effort to save myself.
The first potion brought up this message:
"Magical energies course through your body!"
"You have died."

Magic turned out to be more deadly than most enemies I ever faced.

Welcome to the wonderful world of miscasts. A lot of things can go wrong. :P

You seriously shouldn't try casting the higher-level spells unless you can cast them pretty much perfectly, or are prepared to deal with the assorted poisonings, fireballs, banishments and demons that failed spells will inflict upon you. Several gods also protect you from miscast effects. I think Kikubaaqudgha protects you from necromancy miscasts, and Vehumet from conjuration and summoning. Sif Muna will eventually shield you from everything, but getting piety with her is slower.

I heard that in .8 DDEE is more powerful than Spriggan (What's the abbreviation?) Ens. Can somebody confirm this?

I had an easy time with my MDEE, so a deep dwarf would probably be better. I haven't tried a SpEn in 0.8, but earth elementalists are very powerful now.
