Lol, I'm really a noob at this. I was facing this dude named endmund, and he has me on pretty low HP. I try to zap him with my wand of random effect, and he vanishes while an apple appears where he stood. I thought "haha cool, I zapped him into an apple". A few turns later I'm dead after being clubbed to death by an invisible edmund. :(

The game before I got killed by a stupid frog prince. Oh the shame :(

I'm gonna try draconian transmuter of jiyva again, just for the kicks. I got bored of spamming haunt with my summoner mummy.

Just a question I aways wanted to ask: Which stat favors unarmed combat more? Dex or Str?

I know that it's even for blade hands. Some forms (statue, dragon) rely on strength.
However considering that you can't fight effectively with armor, I would go for dex.

Never use wand of random effect. Ever.
Test wands against a wall.

In other news... Artifact ring. Yes. Ring of ice with ice spell. Yes. Goblin with wand of fire. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUdge.

Nah, they can be useful. One, for spamming to train some evocations. Two, lure mob into hallway, spam random effects wand. It can work as an emergency measure.

But you really shouldn't need an emergency measure.

Yes, you should. You should always have emergency measures when playing Crawl. If you don't, you're not playing well, and will die.

Okay, but not with a random effect wand, what if you heal/invisible/beserk/other positive effect something else?
Blink scrolls and control teleport is where its at.

With blade hands, it actually works quite differently; the base damage of the "weapon" increases with str/dex.

Is this staff  :

really as awesome as the description make it sounds like or is there some kind of hidden catch or undocumented game mechanism that will backfire at my character ?

Staves of energy do exactly that. They also come as robes or rings, I think, but yea, no catch as far as I'm concerned, apart from taking your weapon slot. They're highly sought by conjurers.

Ah great, thanks.

I wish i had found something like this with my previous spellcaster character that could have had a great use of it at some point, but even with my current run it will be interesting as i will not have to focus only on intelligence for my level upgrade points.

It will nearly be like playing a mummy but with better experience gain and skill affinity.

Even if you could guarantee access to a staff of energy (which you'll probably get eventually, at some point), you'd probably still want to pump your Int to the max. It still affects the power of spells and spell cast success.
