Pure spellcasting races can be difficult in terms of survivability, unless you're familiar with many tricks of survival (and get a little lucky with spells). If you need something with a little bit more life, I'd also recommend trying a kobold caster. Their aptitudes aren't the best and can't gain random int at all (they get a chance at str or dex every 3 levels, plus the points you can spend yourself), but you can ignore food and they're one of the only races with an exp modifier of only 1.0. By comparison, Deep Elves have 1.4, Spriggrans 1.3, and High Elves 1.5 (higher is worse). Their skills may not increase as fast but you get twice as much experience as compared to high elves, for example. This lets you level up a little bit faster, getting more health and more stat bonuses, and more experience to train in other things like dodge (survivability) and stealth (the ability to choose whether you'll engage a dangerous target).

Sludge Elf Transmuter can go toe to toe with most monsters, which lets you get good fighting skill for survivability.

Transmuters are all around the best kind of battlemage, since they don't need weapons, have a good selection of spells to start with, have easier acess to earth magic then other mages (except earth elementalists, of course) which means that by the late mid-game they'll be using shatter and crystal spear. Their only real disvantage is that you can't be a succesful undead transmuter since undead cannot change form. Crusaders can be very good too if you somehow survive for enough time to be able to use berserk reliably without needing to eat a truck of food after a level, and if you train your armor skill high enough to not completely screw your spellcasting with anything heavier then leather.

If any branch deserves replacing, it's Swamp. Shoals is a good (newer) water-themed Lair branch, and I don't know that we need two. And nobody likes Swamp. At all. It's a pain in the ass to navigate, is damn near featureless, and is all-around annoying.
I prefer Swamp, personally.  Except slime creatures.  They can go die.

You're using Level 9 spells by "mid-game"? How on Earth are you managing that?

Late mid game for me is the vestibule of hell after you completed all/most of the levels before that.

@Dakk: That's the endgame. Midgame is more like Vaults and everything the average player does around that time. Branches harder than Vaults (Slime, Tomb, Hells, and Pand) are called the "extended endgame".

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

So I'm trying to get a hybrid caster/fighter going in the trunk. I've been using a merfolk crusader following the traditional frozen brand, berserk, haste route while worshiping okawaru until I'm ready to swap to TSO. The problem is two fold a)enchantments have been split into charms and hexes, making spell training twice as hard, and okawaru got nerfed. I can't figure out if there is a better god to use, especially if I want to be able to switch over to TSO. Also, should I be training conjurations/summonings to compensate for the hex/charm thing? Just picking Hex? Charm?

I asked a while ago and did not really get an answer so
I figure I should try again.
I lost the password to my "akhier" login for the akrasiac,
is there a way to reset it or find out what it was?

So it seems I accidentally put my canteen in my wheelbarrow and didn't notice... and then I got really thirsty... so right before going to sleep I go to take a swig from my canteen and... end up snorting a line of low-grade meth.

Interesting fact: I have never used an IRC channel
what do I need to do?
