First time having it (is it new to 0.8 ? ) while cleaning the dungeon, in D:25 the dungeon floor spawned a very large forest infested by many Spriggans

My Deep Elf started killing Spriggans very quickly thanks to the ever excellent Frozen clouds with a few Demons meat shield that sometime were doing really great at killing things themselves.

Somewhere in the forest, i found a mini vault and inside of it a Trog altar and 4 Spriggan berserkers inside, poor things, they froze all to death in their closed vaults in 2 turns.

Then once i cleaned the floor, i went to the end of the forest and saw a Spriggan fortress.
It had numerous spriggan and some spellcasters (that were not in the forest), meaning i had to get more demons and more frozen clouds, retreating to get back some magic point then attacking again.

At some point, the fortress defense was destroyed, i could then enter their castle.
There i noticed many "Spriggan defenders", that i never saw before and never looked up the wiki/bot to see their stats.

As despite some problems due to their numbers, my tactic (demon meat shield + frozen cloud) worked extremely well, but i forgot something that revealed to be fatal : Dungeon Crawl is a program that can decide to cripple you at the worst of the time.

There were 5 Spriggan defenders (maybe more as i was just entering the fort) that were rushing to me (Spriggan are fast, so basically they were running 2 tiles by turn) , behind my meat shield i cast Frozen Cloud, by the time the Spriggan defenders arrive against the demons, there's already 2 of those defenders that are dead.
So it's 3 spriggan defenders that are always inside the frozen cloud and are blocked there by my demons. They're nearly dead, so hey nothing could happen, next turn they should be dead, right ?

Wrong.
Next turn happen, my demons all decide to disappear (i didn't expected them to vanish there), and the 3 Spriggan Defenders move to me, they're out of the frozen clouds.
They're nearly dead, while i'm at 83 health, let's cast again Frozen Cloud, i'm at max Cold resistance, it's not like it will hurt much, so they're going to die next turn, right ?

Wrong.
Next turn happen, my character is nearly dead the 3 Spriggan Defenders always have a pixel or two of health and they're hacking at my character.
Panic time, as i just lost more than 60 health in 1 turn, no potion would save my character at that point as if they heal too few, and running away would not work (Spriggan are much faster + monster energy that would allow them to move and hit etc...).

If i wait a turn, hoping that damned dodge+EV would work this time and hope that they lose their last pixel of health, nothing guarantee me that they will not hit (and so kill) my character before the spell does its job.

And there i make the usual mistake that have killed many of my characters : i forget to check my spells list (i wish the interface could display all my spells instead of only a few as i always forget to press Z to get all my spells) and so i completely forget that i had Controlled Blink learned recently after getting enough Translocation ... and enough MP to cast it several time so i could have gotten far away , rest and then come back with more demons.

Damn another case of YASD.

Very regularly there are new work in progress versions, much more updated than the current stable one.

Robsoie: Whenever you panic, just turn it off.  It seriously helps, and is a tactic used by all the major players.  Oh, and spriggan forest is a new (potential) branch that the devs are testing.  They'll be glad to hear that you got yourself killed in there.  I hope it replaces Tomb.

Vorthon:  It's called Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup Trunk, and is the latest in the development cycle.  I get my Trunk releases by playing online!  (not MMO you twits)  You can watch other people play and stuff, it's cool.

Adding a branch is better than replacing it, i'm sure there are some crawl mutants that appreciate Tomb :D

And from the theme, it looks like something that would fit more as a sub-branch from the "nature" branch, Lair. Would make a nice refreshing one with its visual identity... at least in tile version from what i explored, not sure than in ASCII it would make any kind of difference visually from other levels.

I wonder what kind of idea they would have for the bottom of this branch.

If any branch deserves replacing, it's Swamp. Shoals is a good (newer) water-themed Lair branch, and I don't know that we need two. And nobody likes Swamp. At all. It's a pain in the ass to navigate, is damn near featureless, and is all-around annoying.

I finally have a decent thing going on here.  My first time playing I got to D:5 as a Troll Monk where I mistakenly believed an angel would be friendly to me if I freed it from behind some translucent rock walls and it instead pounded my face in in about 10 turns in which I was surprisingly able to get it down to 1/2 health.

Then I have about 50 attempts or so where death was pretty quick.  The most successful, other than the troll was the one time I went down to check out the Orcish Mines at level 8 as a MD Fi and got my ass handed to me by a couple of priests I couldn't run away from fast enough as a Troll was getting in the way of my escape route.

I now have a lvl 9 Orc Priest of Beogh decked out with a +2,+0 orcish hand ax, +1 Dwarven Boots, +0 Cloak. +0 Helmet, and +0 Orcish Plate Mail.  I also have a stash in the Temple with many enchanted maces/flails I'm a bit too afraid to try out as the game hasn't been too generous with detect curse, remove curse and/or identify scrolls.  I also have several orcish followers including 1 wizard and 2 priests and the present time.

My question is, not that I'm at D6 and is there anything in particular I should avoid doing, i.e. which dungeon paths will lead to almost sure death for me, and which ones would I be safe (relatively) to go for a jaunt around in.

Eh, I'd say Shoals is more annoying to navigate, unless you can lev/fly. You can autoexplore swamp, even though you'll get interrupted frequently when submerged worms come within two tiles), but explore will usually break in swamp because of the tides.

The general rule of thumb for branches is Lair>Orc Mines>Snake Pit,Swamp, Shoals, Evlen Halls>Vaults>Hell. You might want to do orc 1 before the lair for followers though.

I'm going to see how far I can get with a spriggan artificer. Spriggans are fast, and with a rod of striking, I don't have to worry about running out of charges (For long periods, anyways...). I shall report periodically on my status!

edit: I died... T_T

A rod of striking doesn't remain very useful for long. I only use it for training evocations. Maybe try using a dagger or something.

Here's the morgue file:
 t - a +0 ice dragon armour (worn)

Spriggans shouldn't wear armor, because they're better at dodging things.

Quote
e - 2 scrolls of curse armour {unknown}
 h - a scroll of fog {unknown}
 i - 6 scrolls of identify
 m - a scroll of noise {unknown}
 q - a scroll of remove curse {unknown}
 s - a scroll of detect curse
 v - a scroll of blinking {unknown}
Quote
Potions
 c - a potion of porridge
 d - 3 potions of heal wounds {unknown}
 f - a potion of slowing {unknown}
 g - a potion of healing {unknown}
 j - 3 potions of restore abilities {unknown}
 k - 2 potions of agility {unknown}
 n - a potion of poison {unknown}
 p - a potion of might {unknown}
 u - a potion of brilliance {unknown}
 w - 2 potions of mutation {unknown}

It's a good idea to aggressively ID your stuff early on. Knowing what items you were carrying would've helped.

Jewellery
 r - a ring of sustenance (left hand)

Sustenance doesn't affect spriggans.
