Hey, that's not laughable. My highest leveled character (got to XP 15 and dungeon level 9, yeah yeah laugh while ya can) was a High Elf Air Elementalist. Although, at the same time, Spark and Mephitic Cloud are nearly game breaking early on...

What are you crazy skipping levels in the early game :o you need every bit of that precious XP you can get at that point.

Skipping levels is a good idea, if you can't handle what's lurking around. I do it all the time.

I skip the final level of the shoals and snake pits all the time, and come back later when I know I won't die easily to a javeliner/naga swarm.

Well yeah, but that's a branch end. Skipping those for later is absurdly common.

I've found that Scrolls of Random Uselessness can be useful in a pinch. (As long as they summon a bunch of butterflys, that is...)

They can be usefull too if your character is trying to gain the spellcasting spell, as reading scrolls after scrolls is the only way when you don't have such skill in your list.
Finding many useless scrolls can be then a good way to hopefully get spellcasting without wasting too much usefull scrolls.

As any player playing elves knows, High elves are pretty squishy.  Now, imagine for a moment, something infinitely squishier than a High Elf. Deep Elves are the squishiest things I've ever met.  Recently tried a Hill Orc Priest (START THE WAUGH)(lol) and he was so much sturdier. But mostly, just bragging about my epic exp lvl 13 DEFE. (S)he is currently on L:6.  I hate hydras. Hate them so much.  Got insanely lucky with weapons (lol I don't use weapons) this game. I have moderately enchanted sabres of most of the good brands (for Lair: elec, speed, venom). in my stash, as well as a staff of conjuration.

Poisonous cloud is so broken.
Sif Muna loves me so much, I got Ring of Flames and Firestorm so early this game.  Can't cast them, but I'm working on it.

I play DEFE a lot. And I mean.. a LOT. Hydras are extremely easy for me to kill, I'm curious as to why you hate them so much? Sticky flame (I realize that it has been nerfed to melee range, but still) and bolts of fire take them down without any trouble at all, unless you're low on magic when meeting one.

Anyway, I know that fire suffers mid-late game, but I'd still like to know.. is it better to stick with Sif Muna, or is there any sense in going with Vehemut with a FE?  I pretty much always go with Vehemut and while his buffs help a lot, I still find myself in heaps of trouble around D13.

The thing is you start needing defenses at around that point. Start building up dodging, pumping up enchantments (charms in trunk, not hexes) and air. Get some of the defensive spells going.  You really start to need them.

I really want that longsword berserker to work.
What's tricky is the strength weighting. Am I wrong in assuming he'll be most effective, if I put a point in dex for every two points in strength?

If you think Deep Elves are squishy, try Kenku.

They're both equally squishy. Actually, I'd say kenku are less squishy, because they get an EV bonus from flying, and have (I think) better Fighting aptitude.

I really want that longsword berserker to work.

Strength and Dexterity don't really matter all that much. Having decent Str is handy if you're wearing armor with an EVP and still want good Dodging (although if you're wearing something very heavy, you might as well give up on having good EV), Dex is good for EV as well, and for Stealth, and there are a few other minor bonuses, but they aren't as important as Int if you cast any spells.

As a berserker, though, I'd jack Int up to around 8 just to prevent stat death, then work on Str and Dex as appropriate for the race and what sort of armor you use.

Of course Vehumet makes sense; you get cheaper high-level spells, better chance to cast them, more spell range, MP back on kills, and are guaranteed all the best summoning and conjuration spellbooks.

It really depends on what's causing you trouble, though. As a Fire Elementalist, odds are you just don't have much available to you at that time except for direct damage spells, which can be harsh. Make good use of spells like Conjure Flame in order to control enemy movement, and see if you can't nab any other books with some utility spells in them.

I'm going to see how far I can get with a spriggan artificer. Spriggans are fast, and with a rod of striking, I don't have to worry about running out of charges (For long periods, anyways...). I shall report periodically on my status!
