No, it has not been changed. I just asked around in the IRC channel to clarify. Conservation only protects against "outright destruction" (potions/scrolls), not against corrosion.

Oh, ok. I was mixing up preservation and conservation. Conservation comes in amulet form and only protects against outright destruction while preservation, a cloak ego, is the one that guards from damage and destruction.

Preservation is just rCorr (with the rA+) along with Cons, yeah. Damn good to have!

   I finally get a earth elementalist kobold going well
so of course the game has to abyss me. Course this
is my first view of the abyss and I held my own better
then I thought I would with a level 7 character.

   I tried to cast the summon elemental spell. I had a
reasonable chance to cast it actually and the only
bad things that had happened with it where some
5's being summoned and I had a couple hundred
experiences so I thought, Why not? I know I should
not have done it but all that XP and all made me a
bit crazy for a moment.

Yeah, Level 4 spells having severity 3 miscasts is bullshit. I've killed myself in a giant fireball from full health miscasting sticky flame. That's not tactical or interesting, that's a "fuck you, nothing you could of done to prevent this game over".

I don't think I've ever had severe miscasts with my cast chance at, say "Good" or "Very Good", at least not with lowish-level spells.

I've never had a level 3 (the most severe, think Zot trap effects) with level 3 or lower spells. I've only rarely had such severe miscasts with level 4 spells, but it DOES happen. Even at good levels of success, it still happens.

On a 0.8 run yestserday, i had a character sent into Abyss for a miscast on Summon Elemental despite the chance of casting it seemed reasonnable.
As i had no glow before, it really surprised me to get such "game over" miscast effect (game over as the character was not at a level expected to survive Abyss for long enough to find an exit).

I hope the severity of miscasting will be reconsidered, there was no such annoying problem before as crawl already offered the player plenty of way to die anyways.

What chance of casting do you consider "reasonable"?

From tne wording, either fair or good sounds reasonnable.

Memorisation adjectives and success-rates as follows: Very Challenging (useless 0%, terrible 0-5%); Quite Challenging (cruddy 5-10%, bad 10-20%); Rather Challenging (very poor 20-30%, poor 30-50%); Somewhat Challenging (fair 50-70%, good 70-80%, very good 80-90%); Not That Challenging (great 90-95%, excellent 95-99%, perfect 100%).

"Fair", despite the wording, is actually rather unreliable. You want at least "good" and preferably "very good" for things you'll cast often.

   I was not trying to cast the spell to use it but instead
to try to get the skill for it leveled some so I could use it.

Casting a spell you can't cast in order to get the skill to cast it is an extraordinarily bad idea. You have just found out why.


Note: This doesn't necessarily apply to level 1 or 2 spells, which won't have serious miscast effects. Not sure about level 2, though.
