This is going pretty well. Any suggestions for skills and such? I'll probably start training spellcasting properly as soon as possible, but I don't have a great number of spells to actually learn (I was hoping for butterflies, of course, but no luck).

Do you use Ice Form against hydras?

Yeah. They still manage to hand my ass to me half the time.

EDIT: I decided to try some troll Xomitects. One died to a hydra, but the most recent one is still alive and kicking ass in the Abyss, where Xom in his infinite wisdom decided to send me. Xom's been really cool after sending me there, though, sending such boons as friendly demons and an acquirement scroll. I found the Armour of the Dragon King lying around in the dungeon, and even though it destroys my EV, I decided that it's too shiny not to wear.

'NOTHER EDIT: Still in the Abyss. Xom gave me another scroll of acquirement. I used the first one on gold. Don't really want to carry flammable objects with all this sticky flame around. I don't really know what I should acquire. Can anyone think of anything that would help me either leave or survive Abyss?

EDIT AGAIN: Slain by a Green Death. :(

To those of you who are yet to play the newest trunk, I present the following comic. Artist - myself. Oh yeah, btw, it's a teensy bit of a spoiler, somewhat monster related. So have that in mind.

Spoiler: Happy fun times (click to show/hide)

Uh... I might've just got a level 2 demonic guardian mutation.

At character level 2.

Is it just me, or have monsters gotten smarter? Seems like sometimes they try to ambush you now. If a monster's following you, and you go out of sight, they may hang back and wait around a corner. Or is that just random chance?

Deep dwarf necromancer here:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My comments on this combo: pretty good, but the -1 spellcasting was a pain, I ended up finding a staff of energy, so that helped make up for that deficiency, vampiric touch also helps with the deep dwarf non-regeneration, while sublimate blood is a risky way of perpetually fighting people by sucking them dry. I say risky, because that was what killed me in the end, against a huge group, this might not last you long enough. Also, food is an issue, since by the time my necromancy got to 16, my spellcasting lagged behind. Nearly died of hunger due to the first whip I ffound being a whip of distortion, and didn't want to risk the abyss. Also, recharging your wand of healing in dire circumstances might be a great help instead of just relying on vampiric touch.

cag and i started our deep dwarf necromancers at about the same time but i play a bit slower. I met my death at the hands of a hill giant. for most of the tough monsters i have been relying on a couple wands of paralysis and i softened the hill giant up a bit before he got to me but he got two moves in one turn so i couldent retreat up the stairs. my options were to try and out heal its damage (yeah right) zap it with my paralyse wand (tried, he resisted the last charge), zap it with my wand of lightning (tried next, did piddly damage while letting him curb stomp my health) and my last real option was to use my wand of random effects.

hasted hill giants hit hard >.< If only i knew that one of my wands was of disintigration :P

Just a word of advice: Highly enchanted stuff is rarely better than a better weapon, even if it isn't as highly enchanted.

I'd take sabres over any dagger.

Yeah. They still manage to hand my ass to me half the time.

Ice form can beat a hydra with 4 or less heads in a fair fight. For 5+ heads you would need to weaken the hydra or buff yourself.

Yeah. If a monster has a ranged weapon and there's a corridor nearby, they'll hide in it.

It's one of those things (like slime walls) that nobody likes, except the devs. They slightly tweaked it in 0.7, but it's still annoying. Vampiric Draining is surprising powerful. You can drain some tough monsters to death with it, such as hydras and giants.  ;)

Definitely a shield, I would say. Okawaru will give you nice vending machine powers, but I think some others would also work. Like Makhleb, for the demons and the death rays. Or Nemelex, because Nemelex kicks ass. Maybe The Shining One too, although I've never really gotten to wield his more powerful powers.

I would have kept draining him except i had 0 mp left :< well i'm trying the same character again tonight, being able to spam pain at low level without taking any damage is really nice.

Broad axe, tower shield, weapon of flaming. If in doubt, strength, if further in doubt, haste. Don't go for platemail right away, work your armor level up before that. Turn off dodging, you are a dwarf, not an elf.

I just remembered something here, daggers are better than sabers in every way if you specialize in backstabbing. At 27 skill, you cause 11 times the damage of a normal hit, compared to the 3 times of any other short blade.
