Well, cleared the first two levels of Zot then ran out of food.  Guess I'll have to go back and resupply.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I have finally defeated Dungeon Crawl... after about a thousand tries.  Ah well.

Random notes:
From learning controlled blink onwards, I only had one real panic moment (that was on Elf:7 when when a sorceror summoned a Green Death).  Really, I didn't feel like I was in too much danger at any point in the lower dungeon or Zot - it's quite a task to get yourself into a dangerous situation when you run that fast AND can blink anywhere in sight at will.
I never found a reliable strategy for killing Golden Dragons or Orbs of Fire (the only ones I did kill were taken out with a controlled blink next to a sleeping one).  I ended up just ignoring them.
I doubt I would've been able to take on an ancient lich, but I never even saw one in the Orb Chamber!  Same for Killer Clowns.  And there was only one electric golem which I snuck past anyway...
I fought the stuff in the first main area of the chamber, but really, I only went through the right hand bit after that, and avoiding waking up most of the things in those two rooms.  I then yoinked the Orb (avoiding all the Orb Guardians in that bit) and teleported off.  Heh.
I grabbed hold of every random artifact I could find on my way out.  Not sure how good my score is.

Congratulations! :D

I've heard that Okawaru isn't really all that powerful in late game, and many people ditch him for someone else. Like Nemelex. The decks of summoning are crazy powerful. No reason to do that if you can get the Orb without extra help, of course.

I would of recommended a spell called "Metabolic Englaciation" which is like Ensorcelled Hibernation except it's level 7, affects everything on the screen, and has no power limit. Very capable of putting Golden Dragons to sleep.

Good job Leafsnail, you won with easiest race class combo in the game. Now win with a TrEE.

Why did you identify the Orb of Zot? That doesn't even begin to make sense.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

Yeah, I definitely should've ditched Okawaru at some point (I only had him for the gifts, and towards the end of the game he started giving me nothing but +0 animal skins, for some reason).  On the other hand, I couldn't really be bothered to face his wrath, and felt I could probably do the orb room "solo" as it were.

Ah, yeah.  That would've definitely been a good idea.  Not entirely sure why I didn't.

I shall begin right away!

Actually, the thing that surprised me most about the Spriggan was that, in addition to good spellcasting aptitude, fast speed, good stealth, great dodging, good enchantments and a fairly good food game, they also seem to have fairly good aptitudes overall (+4 translocations??  What??).

Why did you identify the Orb of Zot? That doesn't even begin to make sense.
I was identifying my rings of strength (to carry a bit more to the surface) and realised the Orb was identifyable.  I got an extra identification shot, so I decided to use it on the Orb out of curiosity.

I'm trying more ogre transmuters. They're fun! :D The most recent one just quaffed a couple of mutation potions for the hell of it, and got deformed body, talons 2 and carnivore. The talons will actually be pretty useful since I'm fighting unarmed, and I won't be able to wear boots anyway. Likewise, the deformed body isn't an issue since I don't really get to wear armour. And carnivore is a godsend. So, any bets on how long it will be before Xom claims back what is Hers? :P

And yeah, spriggans seem to be great at everything except hit points.

Congratulations! Spriggans can kill anything in Zot, except for Electric golems and Orbs of fire (those can be killed with decks). Ancient lich? Silence. Golden dragon? Needles of paralysis/curare. Draconians? Invisibility. Orb guardians? Alistair's Intoxication. If you had better throwing skill (and switched to Nemelex) you could have easily gotten 15 runes.  :)

"easily" is not exactly the word i would have used to describe trying to fetch the 15 runes :D

Maybe that's a remnant from the Nethack inspiration, as there were many fake "Amulet of Yendor" to be found and could screw up your final sacrifice if by any chances you didn't had a way to see which one was true, maybe originally the plan was to have several fake Orb of Zot to make the player endgame more complicated if no identify scroll was around ?

Hmm... I killed electric golems just fine with haste + melee.  Same for Orb Guardians (they barely ever landed a hit on me anyway).  I didn't really want to use silence since it would disable my own escape route, and since I'd never even got 3 runes before this, I didn't want to screw it up by battling an ancient lich.

And I didn't really bother with needles because I assumed they stopped working later on... eh.  Well, as sub optimal as it was, I blundered through to a win mostly on my own :P.  I think I'll try and get a good mage character next.  There are some high level spells I really wanna use.

Whoah! The latest OgTm nearly shared the fate of his predecessor. A hydra on Lair:3 took down about half of my hit points in one turn. I cast Butterflies and ran. Got away. Still alive.

UPDATE: Slain by Saint Roka. Fuck Saint Roka. >:(

Yeah, but if that's the case, why doesn't he just get Beogh to smite you the second you walk in the dungeon :P?

Also, the ghost of my Troll Earth Elementalist almost just killed my DEFE :/.

well, i had seen this thread a long time ago and tried stone soup, or at least tried to try stone soup; it would not work on my computer for some reason.

Recently i started playing net hack again and my friend cag recommended stone soup. I'm enjoying it very much. most of the time i die on the first or second level due to crap or something (full health fighter getting killed by a hobgoblin in two hits, low level spell caster opening a door and finding 6 different monsters on the other side, etc.)

I have had some success though, my last character was unstoppable, well almost, things could have gone better if i stood my ground but probably not.

you see, I rolled a kobold berserker, found a +1 dwarven short sword and proceeded to go to town on anything that was ever considered difficult in my previous play-throughs. Around dungeon level 10 or 11 I figured I'd go back a bit and take out the orcish mines. While not trivial at first i quickly set into a bloody campaign against the orcs, they were largely unable to harm me save for smites and runed battle axes, all it took to clear the entrance of a floor was trogs hand and to go berserk. around the second or third floor i found a little side passage just filled with ogres, both single and double headed. at first i played it safe but they were only able to hurt me with lucky shots so i raged and slaughter them, dozens of them. near the back of this little side cave was some goblins and a unique ogre mage who i killed in two hits.

I felt pretty invincible, nothing could take my little ball of poisonous lizard fury down. I had been relying on my astounding (to me at least) 19 evasion to keep me alive while i chainsawed through any opposition. Then I found the antique armor shop. Going on my friend cag's advice I bought anything that was named in white text. A concerningly furry robe and a dark gray cloak. the cloak was a cloak of thieves or something, could be used to turn invisible and levitate as well as allowed you to see invisible, it had a -3 damage but gave my 2 dex and 2 more evasion. the furry robe was cursed but i had remove curse so i tried it on. it was a +2 robe with 2 ac and +5 evasion. suddenly the +1 dragon turtle armor i had found in the ogre den was replaced. Now strutting my stuff with 29 evasion I felt truly god like. Certainly trog would be amazed by the new unstoppable power of his prized avatar.

A little deeper I spotted the (an?) orc high priest. cag gave me a simple warning (he was distracted at the time) that the high priest was tough. tough? I killed sigmund in two turns without taking damage, I kill most uniques in two or less hits including an ogre mage. I was the tough one, but i was not stupid, there was a lot of space between it and me and i was not about to count on my stealth (my evocations was far too low to use my cloak effectively. I snuck around, was going to get closer to it before i striked. as I went for the kill he spotted me and alerted like 4 other priests/ mages. I could probably have handled that if i had just raged then but smart old me decided to get out of this wide open area and catch them one by one as they came around a corner. so i move away and the high priest summons a beast, now the tables have turned, I move away again, the beast takes out half my health.

I click on my scroll of teleport, the beast misses and the high priest summons another demon, the other spell casters begin glowing for probably the smiting of a century. I move away, the beast is fast and hits me again though this time for half as much as last time, the high priest summons yet another demon, the spell casters are now out of sight. as running has proven pointless to save me from the beast, i turn and fight, having only 1-2 turns left before teleport kicks in. I hit the beast for a small amount of damage, the beast kills me.

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

btw, how do you post character sheets and can you do so for dead people? that character got me about 10500 points.
