Somehow ice elementalists are way to hard.
It would help if they had some sort of escape skill.
The only time I came somehwhat far was when I found a book of envenomations and learned spider form early.

I have a promising HEIE (EXP:10 D:7 Orc:1) - though being a high elf will make any kind of spellcaster quite formidable. Between Int 25, Spellcasting 9, Vehumet and the staff of cold (found early, D:4 or 5), I have so far been able to blast everything I've met to kingdom come, so the lack of escape option has been academic. No other spellbooks found yet is the only wrinkle so far (2 artifacts already seems pretty good going, though).
D:7 had a cluster of uniques and bad stuff:
  Orc Mines entrance guards
  Pikel
  Joseph
  Prince Ribbit
  Edmund
  Menkaure
  phantom
  centaurs
  ice beasts
Straightforward with this character, anything with cold resists gets taken out by throw icicle (2-shots most things), didn't even have to summon ice beasts. I don't get these ridiculously powerful characters very often using the all-random selection process, death will most likely be a result of complacency or overreaching.

Throw icicle got me through Crypt and the ice ending of Swamp. Granted, I sticky flame'd the ice dragons, but I still shot the hydra simulacra, dancing weapons, and vampire lords with throw icicle. It even worked well on golden dragons, although bone and iron dragons were pretty hard to kill.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

Good call, I'd say.  When you do come back much later, they'll probably have dispersed somewhat.

Latest trunk changes:

- Remove +AC/+EV from randarts.
- You can only enchant body armour (robes, leather armours etc.) up to their base AC.

Their reason?

*vague stare*

... why not just remove AC entirely? Making it vastly inferior to EV in pretty much every freaking way -- less overall damage reduction, greater weight, spellcasting penalties, attack penalties, racial restrictions... and now even less AC, when it's already harder to get than EV -- is doing functionally the same thing. Might as well go full monty!

sure, make melee characters even harder to play in comparison to spellcasters.

There are some changes i can understand, though i dislike some of them (the acid splashing wall is really giving a different feel to Slime Pit, but i don't like that because it provide no fun by example).

I only play 0.7.x instead of 0.6.x because of the very nerfed 0.6.x AC that has been fixed and improved in 0.7 with theaddition of the dungeon sprint game mode that can be fun for quick play, and the arena that is nice.

But crippling even more the fighting-kind of character (the one that rely a lot on AC) while the spellcasters have a much much easy time in Crawl than them is plain nonsensical.
I guess i will stick to 0.7.x in the future if 0.8.x is going in this direction because i like to play non-spellcaster characters half of the time, and despite they always die a lot more than my spellcasters, i had fun so far with them.

To me, challenging = fun, ridiculously difficult = no fun.

Melee characters only really seem to work if they don't rely on AC (trolls) or have magical backup (Enchanters, Transmuters).  Other than that... wow.

AC barely seems to make a difference anymore, and it has big penalties.  If it's being made even harder to get... well, not really worth bothering.

Incidentally, does anyone else imagine Haste like bullettime?

Usually, in ... let's say RPGs, be it computer or P&P, melee characters are a bit easier to understand, and they should be a quick way to get the hang of the game's mechanics.

So it usually is a good idea to play melee characters first.

Not so much in crawl. Also, devs seem to have caught the stupid. I hope there is a cure.

sure, make melee characters even harder to play in comparison to spellcasters.

As a new player, I have only been successful with characters that either didn't rely on or simply couldn't use armor.  TrBe and DDNe are the best examples.  The penalties far outweigh the benefits.  I mean, the best character for a new player is the TrBe, and he literally CAN'T use any equipment.

If you are an equipment-oriented melee class, you better pray you get a lot of wands.

Crawl should come with a USB device that's basically a steel-toed boot which attaches to the underside of your desk and periodically kicks you in the nuts when you're playing a fighter type character.

Actually, this change will mostly affect those who want to wear light armour - spellcasters, assassins etc.

If, for whatever reason, you wanted to wear heavy armour, it shouldn't make that much difference, as plate mail, GDA etc all have base AC of 8+.

I guess the developers don't want it to be easy (or possible) to get both good EV and AC, eg from a +8 robe or whatever.

I do agree that heavily-armoured melee fighters have too hard a time already, however.
