Sometimes I feel Crawl is just way to random. Maybe if shops would buy stuff, and there was a town... I dont know, its probably a design goal that makes sense one way or another, but you gotta admit, sometimes you just dont have a chance against the dice.

I agree with half of this.

Yes, it's too random. I'd like to see many of the overpowered monsters in the first few levels either weakened or moved deeper; eg if orc priests did about 1/3 as much damage with their smiting attack, they'd still be a significant threat, especially against low HP characters, but you would at least have some chance of surviving.

There should still be some powerful monsters to teach players the lesson that sometimes it is better to run away than fight (ogres and jellies are a good example,) but at the moment that lesson is rather futile because if you see a monster you want to run away from, there's often no point as it will kill you at range anyway.

I'd also like to see Mephitic Cloud become less of a 'free pass' through the early game; maybe the duration of confusion should be much lower, and being confused should not make monsters suicidal (they should not be jumping into deep water or lava or attacking themselves.) Then there might be a bit more balance between backgrounds with this spell (currently absurdly easy) and those without (currently absurdly hard.)

The matter of shops not buying things is an entirely different matter, and in this case I agree with the developers; if you've ever played Angband or most variants, you will know that the early to mid game is largely spent carrying around useless gear to sell, which can get tedious.

If you want to play a game that has a skill system somewhat similar to Crawl but with an Angband-like town and dungeon, you could try Sangband

I'd rather see it go the other way. Mephitic Cloud is good, but its almost the ONLY way to consistently hit the temple. I'm not saying the other backgrounds are bad, but I think they should be brought up to MC's level, not have MC be nerfed.

Not true.  Troll Berserkers and some Spriggans will almost always make it down to the Lair.

Fire Elementalists also get Sticky Flame, which is a pretty good alternative.

I do quite well with necromancers. They got the best 1st level attack spell, and with vampiric draining and regeneration they're great at surviving. And they're -the- ghostbuster class, while most of my wizards die to ghosts.

Skill matters more than luck in Crawl. I rarely die before reaching the end-game.

Orc priests are not overpowered. There are plenty of ways to deal with them.

I'd rather see it go the other way. Mephitic Cloud is good, but its almost the ONLY way to consistently hit the temple. I'm not saying the other backgrounds are bad, but I think they should be brought up to MC's level, not have MC be nerfed.

There are at least several combos that can reach the lair easily without Mephitic Cloud. Mephitic Cloud was already nerfed in 0.7.

I love yaks, they're not afraid of fire so if you meet one in a narrow hallway you just conjure a bunch of flames between the two of you and then you have a nice yak roast.

Actually, death on D:11, from (an apparently hasted) Nessos's flaming poison arrows, who pretty much two/three-turn killed me, despite one of those turns involving blinking far away. One of those turns involved him shooting no less than three times :-\ The arrow that killed me did 26 damage.

I was dead the second Nessos saw me. Vamp draining and the axe didn't really matter, 'cause the single time I managed to close the distance, Nessos blinked away. Oh well.
Oh yes, Nessos is a real monster when your character is not having yet a good level and is a fighter-like character (i mean you're not having good spells), Nessos always haste himself immediately and blink like a crazy while shooting from afar a rain of deadly arrows multiple time by turns.

Nessos is like Sonja but on steroids : quicker, more health, more HD, much more magic resistance, and unlike Sonja, Nessos stay away from you as it does not need to go in contact to hit.
The only hope when you have a fighter-type of character is the current dungeon floor configuration, if there is a nearby corner that will hide you from Nessos view, so he will be forced to go to that corner, giving you a possibility to hit in hand to hand combat.

But getting Nessos in an open zone is more than often a death sentence for fighting-type of characters.
I really appreciate every time i have a character destroying Nessos, considering how many character that damned unique killed when i met it.

You don't need to fight yaks; they move at normal speed and have no ranged attack. If you can survive deep enough to meet them then you should know whether your character is powerful enough to take them on, and if not, just stay away.

Yaktaurs, on the other hand, are a different matter.

I polymorphed him into a beatle that was hasting itself and was constantly blinking ???
it made things a lot easier.

Mephitic Cloud and judicious uses of Magic Dart and Throw Flame.

Dowan and Duvessa nearly got me, since I was clearing the rest of the level after killing Sigmund and only had 7 or so MP, I threw a MC at them, then ran the fuck away.

When I came back with full MP and a grudge, Duvessa had run off somewhere, as she'd hasted herself before getting confused, so had ran off into the dungeon. I disposed of Dowan with enough time to spare to get nearly back to full before she came for my blood. I threw an MC at her and back off, wasted my MP on attack spells to not much effect (she was beserked), then ran away to regen. She followed, but I was able to confuse and spam her to near death, before getting a stab in with my butchery knife.

Died later on D:12, running from a mottled dragonling I met on D:13
