Plus, can you honestly say you've never been killed by normal monsters?  I mean, I died to plenty of Ogres, Orc Priests, Yaks, Death Yaks, Hydras...

Don't underestimate nonbosses.  Or you will die :P.

And the game's been won with pretty much every combination imaginable.  While SpEn is currently the most popular winner, it doesn't have a majority or anything.  Plus noone can really agree which wizard class is best :P.

Well if you do decide to play the game and can identify any problems, feel free to bring them up.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

So far the only problem is that I can't get past level 5 :-D  Killed Sigmund easily (in both the tutorial and hint mode), but died to an orc priest almost immediately.  Is there no defense against that?

Getting smitten? No, if the priest wants to smite, he's gonna smite, and nothing reduces smiting damage except Deep Dwarf damage shaving. You can't dodge, block, or resist smiting.and AC won't reduce the damage you take.

They smite less often in melee range, though, so my best advice is to just get as close as possible ASAP. Corners can help out here. Priests are fairly squishy, so don't be afraid to engage them even if you're damaged. Honestly, trying to run away from a priest is more dangerous than just killing one.

In the early going an orc priest is one of the nastiest of the common threats, on par with an ogre, imho. If I can possibly get out of LOS or flee up some stairs, I will. I wait until I'm confident I can handle at least 3 smites, or can kill him in 1-2 rounds with strong spells. Two orc priests at once is an extreme emergency, worth using a blink scroll to get away from if necessary. This is one thing that makes the orc halls so dangerous. Mephitic cloud is a great way to deal with them.

I just killed and ate Sigmund with my Troll (Hunter)

It started with me killing Jessica, I managed to but I was wounded.

I then found Sigmund and began to slice him. he damaged me alot so I fled downstairs into a hallway and drank a heal wounds potion.

I then killed Sigmund and ate him to gain his strength.

Well, the angel being hostile does not any sense in the Crawl background story considering the "good" gods are teaming up, so one would logically expect their followers to be at least neutral, they're all fighting for a common cause.

Anyways, i was exploring upper levels of Vault.
Found the entrance to Hall of Blades. I think it would be ok, after all i was certainly going to hit level 20 inside.
Soon after crushing more of those flying weapons, i got to level 20.

Cleaned the whole Hall of Blades (thanks again a lot to Elyvilon's Self Greater Healing, couldn't have made it without that power) , exited it and out of Vault i met Xtahua. Fortunately, the configuration of the zone allowed me to move behind a corner and wait for Xtahua to come around it while i was putting my fire protection ring on.
When Xtahua appeared, evoked my berzerk amulet and with my excellent weapon of awesome mass killing (well at least the best weapon i found so far).

Code: [Select]

K - the +10,+6 mithril axe "Arga" (weapon) {speed, MR Str+2}
(You found it on level 2 of the Hive)
Attacks with this weapon take half as long as usual.
   It affects your strength (+2).
It increases your resistance to enchantments.
I managed to destroy Xtahua.

And i reached ... level 19.

Yes, i lost 2 levels inside of the Hall of Blades, because of "only" 2 enemy weapons of draining that used the fact i had nothing giving life protection to cripple my character experience, making him going to level 20 to level 18.

Fortunately weapons are worth a lot of experience, so in the end of Hall of Blades i was near to level 19, and killing Xtahua got my character back to level 19, but it will be again a long way before i get back to level 20.

Be very afraid of those weapons of draining if you happen to not having the luck to have some ring of life protection or some inner protection power.

But at least i could skin Xtahua corpse and got a hide of it.
I enchanted it with an armor scroll and got "only" a normal (i mean there was no +something bonus to it) dragon armor that protect from fire and so give some cold weakness, i was hoping some awesome considering the dragon armor always has the name "Xtahua" next to it, but Crawl decided i was lucky enough to have survived Hall of Blade and Xtahua...
Talk about underwhelming items.

In the early going an orc priest is one of the nastiest of the common threats, on par with an ogre, imho.

Worse in many ways, as there is no reason for an Ogre to ever get close to you. And Priests don't need to get close.

In my experience, with Orc Priests, either close the distance and whack it hard (even with magic), confuse it as soon as you see it (Mephic Cloud / Evaporate) and kill it first, or kite it. Kite-ing works for really early priests where you can take only 1 smite. Poison it (via sting, or a dart, or sticky flame) back off, and repeat.

A good general rule for all ranged attackers in Crawl is to close the distance if all else fails. If you round a corner and meet your first centaur two squares away, and you're a squishy caster, you probably want to go forward and not backward (if you can't confuse it). Same goes for orc priests and wizards.

Spam enough spammals and you might. Doesnt work for orc priests though.

Actually, spammals are my spell of choice against priests. Duck behind a corner, spam some, peek out to order them to attack the priest, and duck out of sight again.

I beg to differ. I found it much more satisfying to kill Duvessa, have a Shadow Imp raise her from the dead, and have her devour her brother in search of brains.

Also I managed my best game EVAR. I thought I was sure to get a rune, only to encounter Nikola in the swamp, and then have the bastard blink away while he was in the Red HP wise, leading to my chasing after him, while slowed, into Nergelle, and an accompanying horde of summons.

Wow... herb 1 on a troll. That's vicious, especially if you're berserking. Poor thing.

That being said, I freaking want his hat. That is a bloody awesome hat.

Really shouldn't have chased Nikky, though. Those rocks you had probably woulda' killed him. Large rocks hit like a mack truck. Or your disen wand. Or the wands of fire. And if you were in that bad of a situation, blink then teleport. Blink could have gotten you out of bolt range.

Conservation is good, but does nothing for you if you're dead. One of the harder things to get used to in a roguelike, it is.

One of my major issues in this game is the inventory. I'm a total pack rat, I just want to keep everything with me at all times. I have used a stash before, but I never felt the urge to go back to it. And in dire situations I just forget that it's there and that it has the item that I need.

So on strength classes my inventory is always packed to the brim. On casters I just get discouraged around level 12 because I keep having to drop items.. and when it does come time to use one of my many wands, I tell myself not to because "I'll need it later." Oops, died because I didn't use my wand. Bah
