I summon ice beasts, a pack of 4 took out a 7 headed hydra in melee without much trouble.

staff of chaos.

I found the problem you had :P

Seriously though, those things are death traps. Only use if sincerely desperate. I'd honestly rather be using a distortion weapon -- at least those can only screw you over at a set time and they've got a chance to semi-insta-kill (Banishment). Chaos only does a random brand and occasionally hits the target with something violently dangerous... for you.

"Whack. You deal no damage. Troll is enraged! R.I.P."

I just find random event quite charming.

Nothing is more exceting than living on the edge.

Lemme guess: You're a Xom worshipper, right?  :P

I would be, but you don't last long enough worshipping him...

Mottled draconians have sticky flame breath. You can breath ice beasts for SUPER EFFECTIVE and then run away.

That was my worst game in terms of food.

I've really only found them annoying mostly, they never did all that much damage in my experience.
I've had a couple of casters (mainly Deep Elves) assassinated by them when low on health.  But that could just be bad luck.

My funnest game ever was a Deep Elf Transmuter.  I think I'll try and have another go at it.  Once I had Intoxication and clarity... man, that was awesome.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This guy is pretty fun. I should have went with light armor, so I could cast some support spells. Bringing them between levels is pretty tedious. I wish my orcs could automatically follow me to the next level if I used the "follow me!" command.

I've seen ice beasts solo hydras with a series of lucky rolls and semi-regularly wreck things like hill giants. My MuSus tend to lean on them pretty heavily once channeling is getting 5+ mp per 2-3 uses. According to the knowledge bot, the beasts can deal up to ~20 damage, as much as 3/4ths of that which ignores AC. They don't have terribly much HP (2-3 imps have the same HP pool, potentially a bit more), but they can be seriously dangerous if the RNG decides to hate you for a few rounds. Defenses wise, they're harder to damage than a hydra (5 AC, same EV) and have some nice resists.

In other news, spriggans continue to be flipping ridiculous. Just killed an eight headed hydra by pillar dancing and peppering it with magic darts. Freaking land speed...

Unless I'm a fire caster, I've always given Ice Beasts far more respect than the common Imp. Unless the Imp has a bow or a wand. Mind you, with high conjurations you can take down an Ice Beast at the edge of your FOV with magic darts (they turn to run, then you got em), so unless you're an ice only caster with no wands, it's no big deal.

Dr. Feelgood, please let me know how your orcs do in the late game. I have taken great care to raise and nurture an orc army, and they did pretty well through the middle of the Vaults, but they tended to die rapidly in the later game. However, I think that may be because I got tired of looking after them and got careless.

Chaos brand + Xom = Win. Really. I think it's the only safe way to play a Xommer, along with regularly mephitic clouding yourself to keep his interest at a safe level. And it's definitedly the only one that makes Xom worth the trouble.

Pan lords have better insults than imps:
Ceuquq sneers, "Despair, thou gorbellied weather-bitten hugger-mugger!"

I lost most of my orcs while getting the vault rune. I only have 3 warlords and 3 knights left. My warlords are extremely powerful, but they can't handle shadow dragons. Oh well, that was only the 1st rune. I still have plenty of orcs in mines.

Don't pan lords have the same speech as imps? I remember Cerebov talks like an imp, even though he should be more dignified than a lowly demon.

This was after 2 successive crumbling shafts brought me 4 levels below the one I'd ran from a Summoner ghost to. So, yeah.

Interesting note, you know that Star of David dungeon thing? Really piss easy with Mephitic Cloud, since they just jump in the lava or deep water and insta-die.
