What? Right now? And you're even posting? How does that work? Doggystyle with laptop on her back?
This is the exact reason why we need a laughing smiley

For now XD.

But seriously, I hate that bitch. She's killed over a quarter my characters ever.

And she's got see invisibility now ::)

They turned her into a spriggan.

Also re: Summons -- you get half XP when your minions kill something. That, and the lack of a 'kill everything in that direction' command, is their big downside. And the occasional hostile from some ignorable spells.

Actually, if you can get a clear shot, you can use a bow to direct your minions. Or, at least, it seems to work for me.

I'm not a fan of summoners, but I don't know how to play them either.

What about hydras, for instance, like already mentioned above... I mean, all you need is to be careless for a second, and you got your summons helpin the hydra makin new heads.

OH JOY!

edit: and I wouldnt be surprised if there were tons of other enemies who can give you similar woes.

Nah, not really. There's only a few summons that can give hydras heads (Actually, I'm not sure which can... scorpions? Imps that spawn with weapons?) and they're pretty easy to take down if you just use ice beasts and spammels. I've killed 'em with Imp spam before, so I dunno what was causing it for you. About the only thing you've really got to worry about is smite, beam attacks, and counter summoning -- the first two can be dealt with by summoning up a swarm before turning the corner, giving the attack order, then ducking back out of sight, and the last can be negated by going up stairs for a search cycle or two.

And to Akigagak, yeah, they attack what you attack, if they can see it. The attack target command (t-a) works if you don't want to (or have ammo to spare) shoot things. The wait command (t-w) also sets everything in sight to 'wander', which can be useful for getting them to go around blind corners... or murder a significant portion of the level, if you just brewed up a 4+ casting haunt swarm or something.

What I really want, though, is just a 'go here, kill everything in the way' command, so I can just tell my minions to go around the corner instead of having to induce a summons diaspora every time I need something to arrow-catch for me.

forget what i said. miscast summon ugly thing, got abyss'd, died in short order to like 20 demons.
Couldn't run, no haste, couldn't find a corner either.
I didn't really have a choice though; throw flame was my highest conjuration in 5 books i'd found  :-\

I've got to lair several times now (and Hydras lurk there), and each time I've had a truckload of wands with me. When I meet a hydra, I don't usually have the summons to take it down (with summons alone), but wand spam on a hydra will do the trick. Better wands will kill a (several head) hydra in 2-3 shots, and even lesser ones work nicely.

I usually have enough wands and recharge scrolls for taking down each nasty "summons can't handle" monster.

I know, but wont summons block your line of fire or summat from time to time?

Mm yeah, but that's why I usually keep my distance and blink/summon more when the creature gets closer. There's usually time to make several wand shots, as long as the creature is alone.

Yeah, and my highest char is lvl 12 (summoner), so don't take my word TOO seriously :)

Oh yes. What's the real issue, though, is that in most cases, when you've got a clear shot, there's nothing stopping the hydra from moving in your direction. You can sometimes manage a shot by aiming somewhere besides the hydra, though.

If you've got butterflies (preferably) or demonic horde, though, it's mostly a non-issue. Wand a few times, fire off the spell, get some space while the hydra's murdering the chaff, repeat.

How do you carry them all? Wands weigh a ton... well, 10 stones, but that's still a lot(more than a shortsword...) Of course, it might just be my low strength that makes inventory limits difficult.

Anyway, I found another portal in the dungeon on D:12 that was called a "flagged portal". I entered it and found myself surrounded by orcs, which thankfully were isolated by a moat of water. After going through all of my healing potions and a large chunk of enchanted ammunition, I managed to kill all of them. I eagerly went to collect the loot and found... crap. Well, I guess the reaching halberds and bardiches are kind of nice, but I can't use them since I'm a spriggian, and I can't sell them due to the nature of crawl. Aside from that, I got a scroll of random uselessness, a potion of slowing, and a deck of plain cards, which is perhaps the only moderately interesting item here.

Is this all there really is to this side branch, or am I missing a hidden door somewhere? Rather disappointing if this is really it, especially considering how tough the monsters were... Unless this is the RNG's way of getting back at me for the scumming, in which case I guess we're even.

That branch spawns enemies with returning throwing weapons rather than reaching melee weapons half the time, so it can be very nice if you're into throwing axes.

With strength of 5, I carried 9 wands in my last game. I managed to avoid bad effects of too much items. I pretty much ditched all rings, amulets, potions and scrolls that I was sure I didn't need.

My best char thus far, killed 4 of those hydras, 2 by myself 2 by summons:

There's supposed to be only "good" items spawned in that bailey and on average 6 items. Looks like you got screwed on quantity and quality.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.
