Weird. I mean, I know it's random, since I've discovered it in over 5 games and it has been different each time, but usually there is 1 altar to each god, sans the demonic ones. In this one, there are a few altars to chaotic gods and a whole ton to the primary demon god, which just seems... weird.

Direct link to the temple's map files, via git ;D

The source files fer non-random stuff can be pretty useful, heh.

Robe of the Archmagi reduces the XP you receive by a large amount, so only use it after you're level 27.

I think the Autoexplore is making you guys starve. Like Dr. Feelgood, I very rarely have food problems unless I'm playing a troll, or berserking all the time. Or using Mahkleb's powers a lot.

Rules for food:
1) Butcher every corpse, and always have a chunk of meat on you if you can.
2) Never eat your permanent food unless you have to. If you're hungry or very hungry, keep looking for something edible to kill, and eat that instead.
3) Don't use autoexplore all the time.

Follow those rules and you should rarely have food problems. Unless you're doing things that hunger you.

It's not autoexplore. I autoexplore all the time and rarely have food problems. It's probably just that you guys are resting too much. You don't need to rest after every fight, especially on the early dungeon levels. If you're hurt when you find something dangerous, pillar dance back to full health. More often than not, you'll be fully healed by the time you find another enemy anyways. Exceptions include small levels, wide open levels, D:10 and later for as long as centaurs/yaktaurs/yaktaur captains can easily shoot you to death, and all of Zot.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

My latest victory, and my first victory going for any of the bonus runes at all:

6663159 FreeHugs the Minotaur Barricade (level 27, 278/278 (286) HPs)
Began as a Minotaur Fighter on Sept 7, 2010.
Was a High Priest of The Shining One.
             Escaped with the Orb
             ... and 13 runes (of 13 types) on Sept 10, 2010!

The game lasted 1day21:08:04 (204665 turns).

I'd imagine this is probably the biggest thing. I, personally, do not, ever, move at less than full health. Every single time I've done so, without fail, something has came around the corner and one-shot me. Every. Single. Time. Zero variance. Always.

The only thing even approaching an exception is access to regen, or being spriggan/centaur/having speed boots. Pillar dancing's never worked for me with a normal-speed character against normal-speed monsters. Anything that's slow and sans-ranged option is rarely an actual threat... and half the time, the real threat comes from something quicker wandering in while your dancing it to death ::)

I don't really understand how it is possible to continue exploring with less than 80% of life unless you're hungry and out of any food.
Every single time i did not spend turns to heal, and went with less than 80% of life into the wilderness, it always ended very badly.

And what is the difference between resting and pillar dancing in a middle of a fight (something i was doing in 0.6 and 0.5.2, but prefer not to in 0.7 with the "random action" that can allow a monster to hit and move in the same turn) to heal ?
In both case you spent lots of turns until you heal enough, so the same amount of nutrition has been spent.

Chunks are good certainly, until you're actually hungy and notice that very convenientely the pack of chunks has turned rotten after only few minutes, forcing you to eat those sometime rare perma food you wanted to spare for more difficult time.
The moment i put my hand into an amulet of the gourmand the game totally change, the enemy become the monsters and not anymore the hunger.
Like it should always be.

I almost always fully rest when I'm injured, and I don't have hunger problems. Maybe if you rest all the time and auto explore you have hunger problems?

Do you eat as soon as you're hungry? Try waiting until you are nearly starving before you waste some perma-food. And do everything you can to avoid using skills/spells that hunger you.

DAMNIT

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup version 0.8.0-a0-710-gd28757c character file.

3728 Gilgamesh the Cloud Mage (level 9, -8/56 HPs)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So the moral of the story is that distortion daggers have a too damn high chance of abyssicification, and should not be used

If you learn how long it takes to actually starve once you hit starving, you actually have quite awhile from the time you hit hungry to the time you hit starving.

I don't really understand how it is possible to continue exploring with less than 80% of life unless you're hungry and out of any food.

That means you pillar dance poorly. Don't worry, I pillar dance poorly as well. A big loop helps a ton, doubly so if it lets you stay a whole screen away from your foe.

If you heal up while exploring, you didn't waste a bunch of turns sitting around waiting to heal. Suppose it takes 100 turns for you to heal up and 100 turns of exploring to find another monster, but 1/10th of the time it only takes 10 turns to find a monster. If you wait to heal every time, it takes 200 or occasionally 110 turns to fight another monster. If you autoexplore to heal, it takes 100 or occasionally 110 turns to fight another monster. 9/10ths of the time, you've saved yourself 100 turns. If you do this 10 times, you've saved 900 turns by autoexploring to heal.

Granted, it doesn't take that long to heal up or to find a monster in real life, but you get the idea. You save turns every time you heal to full while exploring.

I refuse to believe that you can get anything but abyssification. I've never seen any other effect on unwielding, and I've unwielded 30-40 distortion weapons in my crawl career.

It's kinda' funny -- every time I've unwielded one of those thing so far, either nothing happened or I got the lower-tier damage miscast. Of course, I never intentionally wield 'em, which might help. And, uh, I've probably unwielded less than five. Heh.

Oh... and of interest to distortion weapons:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I think I just found my all-time favourite style of play: a summoner. It fits my philosophies and is very fun and includes tactics I very much like.

That's my first summoner I've tried, and I died thanks to....a stupid mistake (x3) :-) My inventory was full (can't pick up more items) due to amount, not weight. "Too many items". Well, I was tossing extra stuff, including some scrolls. Well, I was on lair level 3 (I dropped down a shaft by mistake so didn't know any routes up or down) and I thought no scroll could do me too much harm (I had several remove curse scrolls ready). Oh boy I was wrong... I read "Scroll of Noise" and about 10 monsters or so come running upon me, including a hydra. Mistake #1.

I summon creatures with all the magic I have left and start blasting things with wand of fireball. I thought I could take them all. Mistake #2.

Too late I realized that not only was my summoned creatures defeated, the hydra had grown 8 heads! Its heads bit me to death before I could use a teleportation wand on myself. I didn't teleport away early enough, mistake #3.

Anyway, fun, fun, fun. :P

Yes! Summoners forever. I just got my third online victory with a DESu, so I can attest to their power. All you have to do is get good at staying out of the way.
