does anybody else have problems using items like rings of invisibility? they dont seem to work

You need Evocations skill to use evocable items well.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

Strangely everytime i could really have a use of invisibility (monsters i was not sure to kill by example or  crowded area that would have been lethal) it happened that -always- at least 1 of them "can see invisible" and make my character invisibility useless.

Nearly every monsters i could deal with were the ones that could have been puzzled by my invisibility, but there was never a need as they were killable without problems.

Well, right after I managed that four unique pileup I rounded a corner and almost died from a centaur, and quaffed an unknown potion in the hopes of healing that turned out to be rotting.
I survived somehow, but now I've got around 12 rotted HP. >_> Is there any better way to cure it than wasting every potion of healing I find?

Find a place with no monsters around, press 5 to rest, do it untill you're happy. Only do it if you don't mind wasting turns or getting hungry though.

After 14 characters before even hitting level 5 of the dungeon, I don't have the patience for the year of "learning" it would take to still not be able to avoid getting completely boned by random generation.

Being able to utilize all of the automation makes things go much faster, I also HIGHLY recommend getting used to using the "HJKL" controls, it makes the game go much faster, as 'o' (autoexplore) is right there with your other keys.  Using the various automations ("o" is autoexplore, "CTRL-G" is go to, "CTRL-F" is find)you can greatly increase your volume of tries.  14 chars in lvl 1-5 could take about an hour or so of playtime to get through.

For those unfamiliar with HJKL controls(not sure if thats the proper term) H is left, J is down, K is up, L is right.  This takes a bit of getting used to, but once its second nature its a very comfortable way to play.  Once you have those down, you can add in Y,U,B, and N, as the diagonals (Y being up left, U being up right, B down left, N down right).  There is a period of games when you're learning it where you'll accidently press the wrong direction at the wrong time and lose your game, but once you have it down its great.

Also, use the mouse + minimap for fast travel, makes things alot less complicated when you want to backtrack the temple, stash, etc.

even that is easier if you use CTRL-G, you can auto travel to any discovered branch by level, or set waypoints for stashes, though i'm guessing most people use the lair, temple, or hive for stashes anyhow

Though if the info I've been seeing is correct, you might want to head back to level one and/or change levels every once in a while, if the waiting's particularly lengthy. Apparently, there's a trigger after a certain number of turns that starts throwing increasingly OOD critters at you if you sit around on a level for too long. I dunno if it'd be an issue, but better safe than sorry...

It's also considerably easier, if you're already accustomed to the numpad, to just macro a few numpad keys to those commands; personally, the HJKL keys are freakishly uncomfortable for me, 'cause of the way the keys are staggered. I've got / set to autoexplore, ferex, and * - + and . are all generally open for macroing. The F# keys are pretty good ones too, for less common stuff like find and go to. Setting up and saving macros are even a lot easier than it used to be, pre-SS, to boot.

If you're playing online or whatever, just hit shift-X and then > to find the downstairs really easily. You can also just hit control-g then d then the next floor to go there as fast as possible. The one thing I miss from the tiles version is a nice overview of the level. Shift-X looks ok, but scrolling around it can take awhile if the map is really big.

Also, the stairs on th'shift-x view change color (white to green or red, depending on if it's up or down, respectively) depending on if you've gone up or down them before. Good way double-check yourself if you think part of a level's blocked off. Dunno if the tiles version has something similar, I've never played it.

EDIT: Can't figure out how to rest in CAO. Any suggestions? Shift-numpad 5 doesn't work (Numpad's otherwise working fine), so I'm guessing it's something up with putty? Any way to macro it to somethin' else?

EDIT TH'TWO: I've now got a 10clvl/11dlvl vampire venom mage that's been stuck with a freaking distortion quarterstaff since level one both ways (It was the first weapon I tried wearing and the first scroll I read afterwards was a scroll of curse weapon) and I'm starting to get vaguely sick of it. It's a nice weapon and all, but I'd like to wear this staff of power instead, yanno'? Or this awesome bow of reaping. Maybe get my unarmed up a bit.

In folks experience, just how dangerous is taking one of these things off? What would I need in order to survive a banishment, if that went down? If I'm reading the spoiler right, it's entirely possible a level 3 translocation miscast could instakill me, among all the rest of it ><

I use the mini-map when levels are cleared, and a lot of Cntrl + G and waypoints once I start finding branches. But actually revealing a new level...I dunno, auto explore kind of kills what little immersion I get out of the exploration, so I like to do it by hand.

And it's more I just got tired of that ~5 where you're a complete cupcake, and things could turn wrong on a dime. I just wanted to see what the depths of the game offered (had a legit 13 DS CK back in some other version, died in Orc Mines) without even more drama and tedium.

I fully plan on going back for more legit characters...and I totally believe forewarned is forearmed, and results in more fun and less frustration when you're playing it hardcore. It took me several life times just to get the feel for the Swamp...and at least one life time to learn my lesson from Orc mines.

You're going to get banished. Every time. You're going to see either a 1 (demon) or an ancient lich or a deava or something along those lines. Every time. And of course, you won't find the rune before seeing a gate out or an altar to Lugonu. If you don't get banished you're going to take a bunch of damage anyways. Personally, I don't think it's worth the risk. Distortion makes an ok brand.

Speaking of brands, they took reaping out of the game recently. I think it'll be back eventually, slightly different and on scythes, but not in time for 0.7.0.

On my local version I can also hit regular 5 to rest and I was able to rest just fine on CAO with num5... but I was playing a roundrobin so the settings may not of been default. You are in Nethack control mode, right?

You sure? I'd swear I have projectiles of reaping on my game, and I compiled it two days ago from sourceforge's latest.

Your words fill me with sadness, but resignation. At least vamps don't need to butcher to get their food, but stuck weapon means no blood potions, too. Maybe I'll swap over to kiku at some point for corpses, or something. Or just leave it be and get HP via Makkie.

Huh. They just took 'em out in RC3? 'Cause I'm playin' RC2 and just picked up th'bow. Haven't got a chance to use reaping much, though I had a fun time with an arrow stack I made infinite in a cheat-buggering-about game a couple weeks ago.

*checks* Signs point to yes. Just 5 works, and I can shift move back and forth to heal (which is dangerous ><), but it's not letting me shift-5 to long rest for some reason. I'll bugger about more later or somethin', but thanks for the response.

Yeah, pretty sure. http://crawl-ref.git.sourceforge.net/git/gitweb.cgi?p=crawl-ref/crawl-ref;a=commit;h=122380c96f4fd9a8500a1d10aea93bf22c04f784

I haven't played around with that kind of stuff since I still need to configure Putty. I did it before but I don't remember what I did. Something with the color settings, I dunno. I'm trying to find the site that told me what to do. I guess we've all got problems, eh?
