So yeah, throw me some advice, maybe; this is about the best legit character I've had in a looong time, a mummy transmuter. Mostly, I need some advice on god choice; right now, I'm a worshipper of Sif and totally digging th'foodless channel energy, however, I had originally intended to pick up Kiku (For corpse distillation, and maybe some necromancy (if I ever find a book ::))). I just found Kiku's altar, so the question is: Do I convert now, later, or not at all? Is there a better choice for a mostly-inept player? I'm inclined to wait until Sif hits me with a few decent books and then go to Kiku, but I'm obviously not sure if that's th'best of ideas. Also, I've never tried to survive a religion renunciation, so I've no clue how that would play out.

Also, general advice would be nice :P So far, mephitic cloud + evaporate has been wrecking pretty much everything (and Sif lets me sit there and just cloud things to death, if I need to. Effectively infinite mana is so very sweet.), but I just now ran out of non-poison potions, barring a 20 stack of water pots I left sitting somewhere. Still, water pots and/or magic dart + butterflies has thus far got me through everything poison resistant/undead. I'm sorta' trying to get unarmed up to 10 or so before grabbing an actual weapon, but obviously, mummy skill gains are pathetically slow, or whatever. I hate the food clock, though, so mummies are mostly what I play when I'm not giving myself infinite food...

I like Sif, and my suggestion is that you stick with the him. He's just great for mummies, with his free mana channeling. I've never even tried Kiku, though, so I'm obviously biased.

If you hate the food clock, you should try spriggans. Spell hunger is a bitch to handle, but they can pretty much ignore normal time-based hungering. And they have super fast movement speed, letting them run away from virtually everything. No more pillar dancing! :D

Ok, this has been driving me a little batty.

How do you split stacks up? I gots 37 pieces of honeycomb, and they weigh a ton. Game says d#, and I've tried every combination and it won't drop a specific amount. Any help?

Press d, type in a number, choose the letter of the stack. Seems to be how it goes, but it doesn't give any input as to if/how much you're intending to drop, etc, etc. If you're doing it right, th'little symbol besides the item will go from a + or - to a #.

Ah ha. Okey, finally got it. You have to scroll past -more- on the inventory screen until it drops back into game, then hit # of items, then the letter of the stack. What a backasswards way to go about it.

What? I'm pretty sure you can drop a part of a stack from the drop screen proper. I know I can. d-#-[number]-[letter]-enter.

EDIT: Ahahaha! I got my first ever RUNE! :D

While exploring swamp:5, I teleported away from a fight with a lot of irritating wisps and electric eels, right into the middle of a bunch of swamp dragons and hydras. I wasn't that high on health, but they were all asleep. I quickly evoked my ring of invisibility, quaffed a potion of levitation, and proceeded to kill most of them before they woke up. Including the 27-headed Learnean Hydra. I would NOT have wanted to face that thing in a fair fight! The few hydras that woke up quickly succumbed to ensorcelled hibernation. And one remote corner of the dragon room held the decaying rune of Zot.

Also, I got a swamp dragon hide. I already have a buckler of poison resistance, but for a spriggan, any armour is good.

Now I bet I'll drown before getting out of here.

And now I am again puzzled by my possible spell choices. I know Apportation, Hibernation, Repel Missiles, Corona and Shock, and have finally trained spellcasting and boosted my Int enough to make second-level spells hungerless. I have the required books to learn these:

As a spriggan, I am a slave to spell hunger, and as a worshipper of Nemelex I already have access to powerful magic. I was thinking of investing in utility spells. A better source of levitation would be just perfect, especially if I'm planning to take on the Shoals, which I might. I have a randart blowgun that lets me evoke it, but that only works for as long as I wield the blowgun, which really interferes with my stabbing. Should I just take levitation, or is flight worth the hunger and higher casting difficulty?

I'm not sure whether Spammals would be useful. I got a Lantern of Shadows, which kind of does the same thing in a much cooler way.

Mephitic cloud might also be interesting. Right now, I'm hibernating everything and stabbing them to death. It often takes a lot of castings to work, though, and won't work again if I botch my one chance at stabbing. If I had a better weapon, confusing monsters might be more fun and useful. Maybe I should ditch my buckler, and start using this double sword I found? It was cursed, but only 0/-2, which can be overcome with a few scrolls. I haven't used it because it's two-handed for spriggans, and I think the shield makes me a lot harder to kill.

Also, is there any point in carrying this rune around with me everywhere? Does it do anything? Does it only affect scoring if I have it on me when I die? I've never had one.

I never liked Vault, so my order is usually Lair, Hive (if poison resistant, obviously), Orc, Swamp, Snake (not including Snake: 5) or Shoals (shoals is quite easy up to level 5 anyway).  I suppose Vault is next on the list after that (although with rN+++ I might prefer to do all the Elves except the final level).

Also, I'd just like to say - that was one hell of a berserk.  I was convinced I had lost once I saw a bunch of extra monsters come into view, but I survived it all fairly easily.  I killed:

A swamp drake
A swamp dragon
A snake (actually, the random poison breath attacks killed it :P)
A fire drake
Another swamp dragon
A ten-headed-hydra (started with 8 )
Another swamp drake
Another fire drake
Another ten-headed-hydra (started with 8 )
Another swamp dragon

That was definately fun.

Unsurprisingly, I got the Decaying Rune very shortly after that.  Slightly more surprisingly, I found getting the Serpentine Rune much easier than expected.  None of the monsters down there were really a challenge.

Hmm... where to next... Vaults?

I've never been good at this game, what's a good starting class for someone who's never gotten past the 5th level?

The Troll Berserker may be the easiest character, it can hit very hard, and when in berserk mode it just destroy nearly anything in front of him.

But remember to butcher and eat mostly anything that is not poisonned, the Troll Berserker need an insane amount of food (by being a Troll first, and by using the Berserk ability that increase hunger).

Carefull when going out of the Berserk state you become slow for a few turn, so be sure there is no powerfull monster around when you do.

Plus berserking is made easy by the fact that orcs can eat rotten meat, and it seems like they get sick much less often from bad meat.

I just never got very far with a troll berserker, while with orc berserkers I've gotten down to D:17. Mainly due to ridiculously powerful axes and extremely hard plate mail.
 
Another fairly easy class to start out with is deep elf fire/ice elementalist. Their starting/mid game strategy is pretty straight-forward, and Vehumet plays into that straight-forwardness very well.

Continue exploring the dungeon, until progressing starts to feel difficult. Then head for the Vaults.

I wouldn't recommend a deep elf to a newbie. They're the frailest race in the game and their wonderful spell casting aptitudes are useless if you don't know what all the effective spells are. These combos would be easier for someone new:

Deep Dwarf Necromancer of Makhleb (my first win  ;))
High Elf Wizard of Sif or Vehumet (good starting spells and decent HP)
Troll Berserker of Trog (easiest early game combo)
Merfolk Gladiator/Crusader of Okawaru (Merfolks are overpowered in 0.6)
Spriggan Enchanter of Okawaru or Zin (pretty easy once you get invisibility)

Got killed by a goddamn centaur.  I have no idea what kind of arrows they were, but they hit bloody hard.

Still, that was my best run ever, and I got 2 runes fairly easily.

So I just accidentaly gave myself wings, making my draconian look even more badass, even though he's purple :P

Anyways, it seems I got the hardest swamp:5 of all, the icy one. I lack any sort of cold protection so I'm being forced to use air strike to kite the hydra simulacrums outside and melt them. The Ice dragons aren't as scary as them.
