I've come to the conclusion that Sigmund is rather weak. It's just the confusion +invis+ firebolts that do early characters. But if you confuse him first, or manage to get into pummeling range, he's toast. He doesn't deal enough damage to be a threat in that regard (whereas ogres and other high-damage guys still deal enough damage to pwn you even after confusing them, if you engage them in close range.

Prince Ribbit is the one you have to look out for,he blinks very often and sometimes attacks will just go straight through him.

Thought I'd give this game another go, I enter their website and I see this:
Quote
Stone Soup has an active community with a lot of discussion in ##crawl on Freenode IRC, on the crawl-ref-discuss mailing-list at SourceForge, and on popular web forums such as Game Spite, Bay 12 Games and Something Awful
When did we become that well known?
Anyway, I'm having trouble compiling on Gentoo. I did as they said, went into source/ and make-d, but alas, I failed to do something crucial. I get this error

Code: [Select]
util/art-data.pl
Updating dc-unrand.txt...
Updating tiledef-unrand.cc...
    * rebuilding crawl: new build flags or prefix
make: *** contrib: No such file or directory.  Stop.
make: *** [.contrib-libs] Error 2
Any ideas on what I did wrong?

Edit: chromium is messing with my formatting

That Game Spite thread is dead, so I don't know why it's still listed. Something Awful has always been big fans of Crawl (and Team Ogre is there) and this site has a lot of Crawl players too. A few devs read or post on both sites.

So I've decided to try a draconian monk today, and I've been doing pretty well so far. Took short blades as alternate weapon skill and got me a +3 +2 elven dagger of venom, and I've been doing pretty well so far. I got lucky early on and found sigmund in a corner and managed to sneak in and beat him to death, getting me from level 2 to 4 . Now I'm level 8 and killed quite some uniques now, became a mottled draconian and stick fire is pretty useful, found me some decent randart ring of evasion. Had some close calls though.

Anyway, I've reached the ecumenical temple, and dunno what god I should take :C. I've never played a monk for so long before, or even a draconian, so I'm not quite sure of what to do. Any sugestions?

I'm tempted to try Jivya, if I find his altar that is.

Cheibriados gives you access to the ponderous brand, which gives you some pretty badass defensive boosts to your clothing and armor.  Since you're a draconian you can't wear most armor, so having it do extra work for you can be very nice.  And since you've got sticky flame breath, the fire will continue to do damage on its own regardless of how slow you happen to be moving (same goes for the venom dagger, although you'll probably be switching that out for something else soon enough).  The slowed metabolism can also help with the hunger incurred by breath weapons.

There are a number of other choices as well that will all provide some amount of bonus.  I don't have much experience with monks so I can't say what all they need or which god best suits them.

Jivya is not at the ecumenical. You'll have to either find the slime pits, or search for a random temple (which are surrounded by jellies. Beware.). Not that easy to get early on. I got lucky in my last game, but got unlucky soon afterwards

Ponderous only adds a delay to move. It doesn't affect anything else except for the stat gain at certain piety. (doesn't affect ac)

I don't think Chei is good for Drac's since they can't get the full +15 to stats due to the lack of armor slots. He is nice for making cheap artifact gear for say, Slime.

Nemelex is never a bad choice.

What.

As a fire elementalist, I have Blink, Mephitic Cloud and Selective Amnesia memorized at dungeon level 6.  I also have the book for Extension, although I'll probably want a few more buffs before learning it...

In short, there is an absolute guarentee that something will go wrong and I will die before reaching the lair.

Chei would be bad because you won't get the full branding of wearing 5 pieces of his armor, You could go for a combat god for the buffs(okawaru, trogg, shining one), but not be able use most of their gifted armor and weapons, Or you could get a god that gives you secondary help, like Elyvilion (you can heal yourself and make monsters neutral by healing them), or Makhleb (good ranged aoe and summons)

Draconian Monk? I'd recommend Okawaru. He's simple to use and powerful. Okawaru is like a vending machine with haste and might potions, and occasionally gives out weapon/armor acquirements.

Anyway, I have a new tip of day. It should be useful for stabbers and fast weapon users.  :)

I recall reading that god gifts (except for Xom's) will always be usable by the player, just not always helpful.

Zin! Take Zin!

Oh, I mean umm... take The Shining One. Decreased armor slots means that free rN+++ will be a big help. No need for spell magic, TSO gives you another ranged attack (good vs fire-resistant foes), summons, and invocable shieldl. Only downside is that TSO's invocable shield is kinda meh without Shields skill, and shields and unarmed combat do not mix well together. Oh, and you won't be able to take advantage of TSO's ability to bless a weapon, but that's not a huge deal, is it?

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

I've decided to wait, but I'm taking all of your suggestions into consideration. I'm really tempted to try Jivya though :P
But yea, I won't be taking Chei. Zin sounds like a decent choice though, and I'm also thinking about Okawaru.

Anyways, I'm level 11 at the orc mines now. Had more close calls which I excaped thanks to this ring of controlled teleport I found. But just now I found both Sonja and Elrocha, on the same floor and at eyesight range of each other. I immediately climbed back up :o

I'll try an alternate route and try to flank them. Thankfully I'm proficient with mephitic cloud, but its the only spell I've mastered so far. I followed Demo's advice for today and stopped raising short blades once it got to 10, and now I am taking advantage of its crosstraining with long blades to raise it aswell. This +2 +5 greatsword I got from this unique (don't remember which, all I remember is that he cried that he had too many children before dying :o ) is helping me greatly, I'm now some sort of badass draconian swordsman, one-turn'ing alot of stuff due to the fact both the sword and unarmed attacks work at the same time :P

I should stop raising blades and get unarmed combat to 10 sometime though, its only 6 by now, rising slowly.

UPDATE: I survived due to the awesomeness of mephitic cloud, and now I got his dagger of distortion from Sonja's corpse which I'm so tempted to use.
Anyway it seems I've hit a dead end. I tried several stairs but at the end I only found a passage to the elven halls, which leads me to a small room with a shop, with no way to go elsewhere. Since I have no means of digging or magic mapping (to use with teleport). I came back to the dungeon, were I'll continue slicing me way through the lower floors. I'm at dungeon level 11 now.
