Swapped back to the ever reliable DEWz(Fi). Just got a +4+3 demon whip of venom for 200 gold. Also a nifty longsword of holy wrath that I haven't identified yet.

DeWi(fi) are the bestest, most definitely. I found a sword of speed, but it wasn't good enough.

Well, I'm hoping the +4+5 longsword of HW and the +4+3 demon whip of poison complement my casting.

I'd like to ask about patterns. Now, I know the game is ruled by the RNG. However, in all my DeWz(Fi), I've never seen Sigmund early. Early as in, like before D4. Now, I recently tried several Spriggen and DD artificers, hoping for massive evocations once I hooked up with Nemelex, and every time I tried I met Sigmund before D4. I've noticed other things, like swarms of imps on D4 and D5 with artificers, lots of gnolls as early as D2 for DeWz's, and I was wondering if anyone else has noticed similar patterns.

I've seen an altar to the abyss, if that counts.  Stupid imp blinked to me and started following me around.

When should I expect to see more spellbooks? It has been bothering me, I feel like I'm running out of options.

Personally I think it's really just an illusion.  We don't pay attention to the enemies that aren't a threat to us, so they don't even register when we're rolling through.  After all, there are a staggering number of goons out there, are you going to remember all of them?

We only make note of the real threats because we have to stop and think about how to handle them when they show up.  Because of this, they attain a certain amount of importance and stick in our minds.

Of course, there is a way to check whether or not it was just your mind making things up.  Look at the character dumps.

Oh, and by the way...  I don't care how many times people talk about how harmless or inconsequential imps are, I SODDING HATE THE BASTARDS!

You can't ever kill the things since they regenerate so quickly, and although they might blink away from you so you can get away, they're also quite capable of blinking towards/in front of you.  And if they picked up that runed orcish hammer of electrocution and the +3 darts of exploding you left lying around (since you, of course being a wizard, had no use for them)?  And then decided to show up at the most inopportune time when you were attempting to deal with an ogre or whatnot?

I hate imps.  Although having a shadow imp pop up on occasion and just run through the level resurrecting the corpses you've left behind would be pretty awesome.  But not the standard imps.  No, those guys are dicks.

Well, if you can kill Ogres, most of the rest of the dungeon until around D:10 is going to be fairly easy.

This is so true. (with an exception for a couple uniques. Stupid Pikel killed me many times.)

@beorn: I've gotten Sigmund a few times early with that combo, but killed him pretty easy. Same with the lots of gnolls (I get them every few games, in mass quantities, but I kill them super easy with MC.)

Anyways, I had no internet for 24 hours, so I went on a crawl spree. I only played non-DEWi(Fi) a couple times...but I finally got to D:10...which is where an invisible thing showed up and slaughtered me. :(

I was getting angry at my game...so I was naming my people all insane things, like "WTF" "WTH" "OMG" "NOOOO" "GAH". This one, "-.-", was my bestest run ever, over twice as many points as my last record. I think I'm getting better at this game, slowly but surely.

Be sure to clean your bones files. Fighter types aren't too bad, but DeWz(Fi) are NASTY to encounter as a ghost.

Incidentally, my latest DeWz(Fi) just got a book of Annihilations after a massive brawl with Prince Ribbit, Blork, Pikel, two orc squads, a swarm of Bees, and half a dozen frogs. Should be fun since I'm also worshipping Nemelex.

Nemelex is actually okay once you get used to the cards, and are able to deal with the badness.
And pulsating lumps of flesh. I hate you sometimes Nemelex.

Sooo...the only things I really had problems with that round were snails. What weaknesses do they have?

Yeah, but I suck at running. When there is something on the level I cannot kill, that's when I usually end up dying. I must...explore....entire...level....

I was actually ready to run from that invisible thing though, but I died when my draw card from inventory ability failed. I was going to try to draw an escape card.

Got another character to level 14, which is near my best. Cleared Lair, pondering whether to do Orc or Snake now.
I think I fail at midgame because I do a bad job selecting spells. Here's a dump, any tips on what to memorize?

Just looking through your spell books, Mystic Blast is a biggie. Selective Amnesia, and Haste or Slow. Haste is good, but Slow is acceptable. You had no way to deal with fire immune enemies. Mystic Blast is the biggie to get through that.

You could always run away from them... Besides, why would you bother deleting them. They're automatically deleted if you die on a different floor.

Replace that ring of protection with the ring of SInv. AC is useless for spell casters. Memorize Mystic Blast (for fire resistant enemies), Bolt of Fire (to replace Bolt of Magma), Regeneration (efficient healing), Haste (best spell ever), and Selective Amnesia (Sif's ability costs a lot of piety). Orcish Mines is easier than the Snake Pit.

My success with Haste is listed as useless, so that's a no-go. Selective Amnesia is very poor, and I think I can handle the piety cost anyway. I was thinking of keeping Magma Bolt for getting some points in Earth magic, but I guess I can just spam Stone Arrow for that.

I'm mainly thinking about doing Snake first because my poison resistance comes from a normal mutation (ie non-demonspawn), and if I lose it I got no poison resistance whatsoever.

What about the poison spells, they worth anything? I guess Poison Arrow costs too many slots to be worth it, but how about Sting. Is poison plus Sticky Flame an overkill?

As for Regeneration, does it stack with the ring?

I would kill for that sword. That may be one of the best randart weapons I've ever seen.

What I would do? Turn off Fire Magic and learn Iskenderun's Mystic Blast, Orb of Destruction (eventually), Teleport Self (in the future), and Haste (VERY far future).

Start by learning Mystic Blast. From there, you've got several options. Note that I'm ignoring spell failure rates since I have no idea what they are. Some of these aren't feasible, but I'm just saying options here. You can learn any of the schools at this point just by victory dancing. Eventually, you're gonna do all of these!

  • Learn Sting and Poison Arrow. Poison Arrow has a chance to poison enemies that rPois, and only 25% of its damage is resistable anyways. Basically, this spell is even effective vs the undead and just slaughters demons.
  • Learn Orb of Descruction. This spell does crazy high non-elemental damage... from a distance. You've gotta be pretty good at identifying threatening foes from a distance to use this one well, and even then it sucks in hallways.
  • Learn Fire Storm. Fire Storm does very high damage, although much of it is elemental. Note that you'd probably be better off just learning Bolt of Fire and working up to Fire Storm. Bolt of Fire does good damage, although again, much of it is elemental.
  • Learn Teleport Self. All your scrolls will burn up eventually anyways.
  • Learn Haste. Useful since it lets you attack more. Useful since it lets you run away really fast if your attacks aren't successful.

If you need spell slots, temporarily forget Stone Arrow and Bolt of Magma. BoM specifically sucks. A lot. In fact, you should forget it and learn Bolt of Fire if you want a bolt that badly. Mystic Blast is superior to Stone Arrow, so no need to have both.

Skill tips: Turn off Short Blades, Long Blades, Stabbing, Throwing, Unarmed Combat, Air Magic, and all magic schools you aren't trying to raise so you can use a better spell. Fire Magic is likely to need turning off even IF you're saving up for Fire Storm, at least occasionally. Consider turning off Spellcasting if your spell hunger is acceptable and you don't need more slots. Which you don't until you're clearing branch ends. You need more specialization. Conjurations is good, but Dodging and Fighting are better.

Orc is easier than Snake. Much easier. As long as you drop off most of your potions and scrolls in Lair and only carry in what you need, you'll be fine. If you see a High Priest, ditch the level since you KNOW he's gonna summon a demon that'll mutate you and take away your rPois. Seriously though, the loot's horrible and the exp is extremely low, don't risk your life or your mutations. After Orc, do Snake:1-4. After Snake, do Vaults:1-7, Crypt:1-3, and Blade. After that, come back and we'll talk again.

Regen stacks with the ring. All enhanced healing sources stack.

Sticky Flame + Poison is in fact overkill since the only things that are really threatening move faster than you and/or have ranged attacks. Either way, you can't run. Sting is mostly for training Poison Magic at this point, although it's much cheaper than Sticky Flame, so there's that.
