I've found some more spellbooks, but haven't used spells much. Nemelex decks have been quite sufficient where poison needles and stabbing have failed. I've been grinding apportation enough to get 4 spellcasting and 6 translocations. I've seen a book of party tricks in a book store. Maybe I should grab that and get butterflies, levitation and intoxication. I'm also considering buying the book of air for swiftness, repel missiles and mephitic cloud. I found a lamp of fire elementals, but the success rate for that is way lower than earth elementals, I think. Need closer to ten skill rather than four, I think. And then there's the lantern of shadows I'm not carrying with me because of my spriggan carrying capacity.

How high do AC and EV get? Mine are 14 and 26.

UPDATE: Make that two lanterns of shadows. I wish I could dual-wield them. :P

UPDATE: Oh, right, can't learn swiftness. Already too fast.

I think they're getting caught in a difficulty-spiral. I mean, did the Slime Pits really need to be made harder? Really? REALLY? No, they didn't. It was already a hard branch, and the Royal Jelly is going to forever remain one of the hardest monsters in the game, corridor or no corridor. It's still better to fight in a corridor, by the way, although it's fun to us the stairs to climb down, shoot spells at the Royal Jelly, and then climb back up before he reaches you.

Wanna know what needs fixing and difficulty tweaks? The fact that a lot of the mid-game uniques are heavily armored fighters who also cast spells. And by spells, I generally mean various bolts. That's not very interesting. Donald can stay, but Joseph and Frederick need to be changed or cut. And many of the early uniques are easy to kill once you've gained a few levels, but then give out a crazy amount of exp for their difficulty. Is Pikel really THAT dangerous? I think Grum gives out less exp, but Grum is far more challenging.

@Soapdreqm: AC and EV are uncapped. They can go as high as your stats, equipment, and skills will allow them to. 14 AC and 26 EV is actually pretty good, but keep on training Dodging and maybe raising Dex.

Nemelex actually replaces spells quite nicely, in most cases. For instance, you don't need to learn Abjuration because Decks of Summonings have you covered. Still, it's always good to know Butterflies and Intoxication, and Apportion is one of those spells that's surprisingly useful.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

Yeah, Pikel is misweighted, especially if you're a spellcaster.  I mean... a mephitic cloud and a few flame throws earns me two levels worth of xp, sometimes.

I'm curious to hear solutions to the acid walls... does it involve vitrification, by any chance?

As for uniques... quite samey towards the middle, yeah.  You get some interesting ones towards the start and cool ones later on, though.

Someone PLEASE tell me the Book of Annihilations I found on D:1 was utter crap that I shouldn't be sad a bit about.
And someone tell me why the first non-DE Wizard I play in weeks get's a Book of Annihilations on D:1. You couldn't have waited one more game to give that to me?

Don't worry, Jivya has eaten it by now anyway.

I just thought of an interesting feature for the royal jelly/Jivya. When you kill the jelly, Jivya goes crazy, and the spawn rate of slimes in the Slime branch goes WAY up until you get out, when it seals.

It was in my inventory, Jivya doesn't eat things in the inventory, does (s)he?

EDIT: Xom altars are pretty. All the flashing and lights is fitting for the 4th of July.
His altar rooms in the dungeon, that is.

EDIT: THAT WAS CLOSE. Worshiping Nemelex (because cards are fun.)
I haven't really used him that much, but I had an Ornate Deck of Escape, and pulled the Tomb. Right at the end of a hallway. One space futher in and I'd be trapped.

Can someone tell me what the Legendary and Ornate decks do better?

Greatly increased power, and the ability to draw cards at a higher power level. Plain decks are always the most basic form of the card, while ornate can be power level 1, and legendary has a very good chance of at least one, and pretty good at being two.

Well, duh.  Do you think you'd find any of those if you did?  Xom does not pander to the confines of usefulness.

Ornate and Legendary cards have more spell power for the spells they cast, and depending on the card drawn, sometimes have an enhanced or more useful effect. Of course, sometimes you still get low-power cards even from a Legendary deck.

For instance, many summons at power 0 (regular deck) have a 25% chance of being hostile. Higher-power cards summon better creatures and are never hostile.

Turns out Bolt of Magma isn't enough for Death Yaks even with a Wand of Draining. And I was wearing 2 rings of protection (+10 AC) and had +3 natural armour (demonspawn) too. Damn it, I had found books of Annihilations and Geomancy, rarely do I get two books with such natural progression.

I managed to get two Pan runes in a row. I nearly got killed stealing the rune from Cerebov. Now, I banished myself to get the 8th rune. The abyss is very boring, when you're hiding in a corner for 10,000 turns.  :P

Controlled teleports or a wand of digging. I'd use Vitrification with a Tomb card to causally smite the Royal Jelly to death with Airstrike.
