It's supposedly a great spell. Just remember that seventh level spells cause a lot of spell hunger and require 7 mana, which will add up if you don't have a huge mana pool.

I don't remember what spell power I had, but I had very good success chance so I think it was decent, yet it couldn't even one shot an elf knight. Tried it against a unique (something with D, but not Donald) that killed me, and it barely knocked out 1/10 of his health. And it can't hit a damn thing. For a spell that claims it homes in on it's target, it sure flies in a straight line.

Honestly, most spellcasters haven't impressed me all that much. Compared to the raw power of a MD Fighter or Troll Monk, they seem to have very limited power and be very fragile. Summoners, on the other hand, are much better imo. Possibly it's because spammals is so powerful and the later summon spells kick it up a notch, but summoners are much better able to take care of themselves in my experience.

They make up for it by being more fun to play. Fighter types are really boring IMO.

But you're right about summonings. I should've bought that book of demonology when I had the chance, and unleashed hordes of demons on my foes.

Stalkers are a good magic-fighter hybrid to try. You have high stealth and for the most part rely on fighting as assistance to your spells/mana saving.  It plays different than a regular wizard because it is convenient to keep at least some decent scores in fighting skills (Stats not so important because you start with high dex anyway, and get blade bond in your first book)


BTW: another reason why summoning wizards are superior to dedicated summoners: Spammals is hungerless for wizards, but not for summoners. At the start, that is

I kinda expected Orb of Destruction to be a bit more, you know, destructive. What a waste of 7 spell slots. Oh well, I'm dead anyway, next time I'll pick Poison Arrow instead.

A spell that causes monsters to explode into chunks and shatters a wall on impact isn't destructive?! It used to be awesome, now damage is tied to distance and accuracy is based on spell power. Iron Shot is better than both Poison Arrow and Orb of Destruction.

You will likely get your spellpower up high enough to make rank 1 and 2 spells hunger-free fairly fast. If you're having trouble with spell hunger, try a vamp. They have decent spellcasting proficiencies, cannot starve (they stop healing at full bloodless though), and can eat until "full". Very effective race.

Alright, so Vampiric Draining does not work on summoned creatures.  You don't get any health out of the ordeal.  Now, to try biting summoned creatures while playing a vampire...

And although it's a horrible spread of spell skills, Mepihitic Cloud is indeed affected by Ignite Poison.  And I don't know if it's the spell itself or if Ignite Poison has its power increased through spell levels (wizard mode, everything was maxed out), but I killed an ogre with a single Cloud-Ignite combo (within one turn, in fact).  Same went for many, many orcs down in the mines, including knights, priests, and all the rest.  It's very expensive though in terms of mana.

I'm fairly certain there was something else I was going to test...  Can't remember what it was.  Guess I'll just tool around with the vampire now.

EDIT:  Attempting to attack your own summoned creatures won't get you any blood for your efforts.  This guy thinks of everything...

how can you hold back for not having food? In my experience, lack of food (or perceived lack of food) mostly forces you foward, whether you like it or not.


Curiously enough I am having more problems with food with vampires than with normal races, now. Butchering all corpses on my way and eating them whenever I get hungry is working fine, particularily since it means that I can easily end up having a hoard of bread and meat. But since vampires only get the blood bottling ability at level 5, combined with the fact that it's convenient to be at least thirsty because of resistances (eg: poison), I tend to run on bloodless far too damn often. Which means that you dont heal. Which means that you might well be killed by that stupid rat you are trying to ambush in order to drink it's blood.

It's tricky early on, but once you've got blood bottling then it's all over (better even than normal critters).  In the early game you need to try and balance between sucking up blood for regeneration and then letting it dribble back out so you don't die to the first snake you find.

The difficulty with the bottled blood is that after a while they coagulate then just disappear.
The 1st time i played a vampire, i didn't know that, it was not a great discovery to see my stock disappearing after coagulation when i was beginning to need them somewhere in the crypt depths ;)

The wiki state that they coagulate after 2000 turns, so you need to calculate a bit before entering a blood-less branch, and so avoid killing some monsters so you can come back and make lots of blood bottle before entering such branch.

But they're an excellent quick way to become alive again to use the regeneration before attacking some monsters when you're badly wounded.
