The problem with spells like paralysis and sleep is that they're single target. That makes them situationally useful for the player but always useful for the computer, since unless you're playing a summoner it will usually be facing a single target - you.

What happened? I "heard the tinkle of a tiny bell", and was surrounded by butterflies that saved my life. I had just cast Mephetic Cloud, and I am not worshipping Xom.

Did you read a scroll? A scroll of random uselessness can do that. It's also possible that a creature used one. I've never seen them use scrolls before, but they've quaffed potions, invoked gods, and evoked rods before so why not scrolls.
I don't think I did...and they were all friendly, so it wasn't them.
Also, mephetic cloud on butterflies = SPAM OH GOD SPAM

I've experienced an odd slowdown with crawl in 6 and trunk, tiles versions in both cases. Auto-exploring, spellcasting and the like would go like greased lightning, and now chug along at frustratingly slow speeds. I don't think I've done anything to deserve this, either... Hell, I've deleted them both and got fresh files and I still experience it. Anyone know what my problem is, or how to fix it?

If you mix grease and lightning don't you get sticky flames?

Found a bone lantern. Then straight away saw a mummy. No curse for me  ;D

Summoned butterflies are never friendly, but they are confused... and have no attack?  I think.  Therefore an enemy summoning butterflies has pretty much the same effect as you summoning them.

And level slowdown usually happens when there's something else in the level taking up a lot of processing.  Not sure what it would be.

Got three runes (swamp, shoals, vault), about to head into Zot. What would you recommend I take with me? I have a fairly large cache of food, scrolls, wands, and a few different pieces of resistance gear. Aside from being overwhelmed by very powerful monsters, what's the most dangerous thing in Zot?

Zot traps are quite plentiful and can have a very fun range of nasty effects.  Not really sure how you'd prepare yourself for that now or how dangerous they really are (I've never been to Zot legally), but it's still worth mentioning.

Found my first decent randart!

J - the +8,+3 halberd "Kira Sche" {elec, Hunger+ MR Str+1 SInv}
(You found it on level 5 of the Dungeon)
Occasionally, upon striking a foe, it will discharge some electrical energy
   and cause terrible harm.
   It affects your strength (+1).
It increases your resistance to enchantments.
   It enhances your eyesight.
   It greatly speeds your metabolism.

Is this worth giving up my shield for? I'm a level 5 DrPa.
I have two rings of sustenance so the hunger thing won't be a problem.

It's post-modern art. It's useless, it looks weird, but it's worth a lot of money.
Plus, with an elephant, you really only need to caulk a couple places. They start out pretty watertight.

It depends. This will base off your polearms skill. If you have very low polearms skill and you don't want to grind it up, don't bother. However, that's actually one of the better randarts I've seen. I'd give it some serious consideration. At level 5, you can grind up your polearms skill without too much work. Up to you.

See invisible is VERY nice. I'd carry it just for that, even if you never use it.

I have tried one of those flame wizards for the first time.

Oh boy does it rock.

And curiously enough, not because of the flame spells, which I dont find all that useful. But mephitic cloud is an all around cool spell.

And summon small mammals, man...

what you say? that it sucks? obviously you havent tried it when your summoning skill has gone up to 4 or 5. Every cast spawns two rats (I think). And by that time you likely have mana to spare (I have 18). If you have enough room, you will have little trouble with anything. Gnolls, ghouls, orc wizards... it matters not, your rat horde will devour them all the same. Just cast cast cast and back up behind your furry brethen.

I avoid the spammals when playing wizard of fire... if only because I tend to do that as a summoner instead :P.

Blink is also useful, especially when you get tele control.

yeah, it can be a lifesaver, but man, rat spam...

I had been spamming it just to train my summoning skill (I found a book of demonology early on, and I want to use it). Later, I got swarmed by a conjunction of gnolls, orcs, and a hippogrif and started casting it out of desperation. I was very surprised when, after the dust settled, me and my rats were the only survivors.

PD:

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

Note to self: stick to rats. Forget about elementals.

Yeah, elementals can be good later, but aren't worth it when you first get them. Now, Summon Butterflies is even better then Spammals.
