Bones files in crawl are just player ghosts. No monsters, no items. My guess is that you were touched by the divine grace of Xom, the Random Number God. :P

Well, I suppose some new Trunk addition MIGHT have messed up the random monster placement algorithm, but it's always theoretically possible to run into stone giants on D:1. Just highly unlikely.

My latest sludge elf transmuter is doing well, which usually means that he's about to die a horrible and embarrassing death. I found an amulet of the gourmand, which means that I don't have to worry that much about losing my carnivore mutation. It's still useful, though, since I can use the neck slot for clarity. I got this crystal ball of seeing, and I'm not at all sure how to use it. They require tons of evocation skill to use, right? The previous crystal ball I tried ate all my intelligence. I guess I could train with my staff of channeling.

I've been piling all my attribute points into strength for the carrying capacity. Who cares about casting spells when there's all this beautiful dungeon clutter to pick up? :)

I'm narrating and asking for advice. I'm not sure which branches would be most viable. I have resist cold level 2 mutation, so Cocytus is most viable short of the rN. Likewise, my platemail has resist fire so Ghenna might be doable as well. I picked up a randart necklace with a little rN, so it might be doable. But I'm still torn, the abyssal or pandemonium runes might be easier to get, especially since I also got slow metabolism so food would be less of an issue.

As for where I've been, I've done orc, lair, hive, and swamp, plus the first four levels of shoal. I'm on dungeon 27 now. I'll probably go back up to vault and then do elf for experience before going after Zot:1-4 and then getting my two remaining runes.

Edit: Just got a helmet with rN+, so that takes me up to rN++

Aren't you playing in wizard mode or something?  ???

IIRC you're playing a fighter, so this is order I would play:

* Slime Pits - I always use a replacement armor set, since I don't want my stuff to get corroded.
* Shoals:5 - Levitation and high MR are mandatory. This place is very hard for pure fighters.
* Hell - Switch to TSO and clear the Crypt first for a huge piety boost.

Just make sure you're aware that when you pick up the Orb of Zot, all the portals in the dungeon will close. Specifically, you won't be able to go back into Hell.

The vestibule stays open now.

Also, is Dragon Form any good now?  I just ask since it's so inherently awesome.

It does insane amounts of damage in exchange for making you very vulnerable. A berserking dragon form user can kill Cerebov in 5 hits (crystal spear needs twice as many hits).

I've just found out that Wizards (flame) are about a thousand times better than the Fire Elementalists I've been using in the past :/.

I disagree. Sticky Flame is a very good spell.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

What happened? I "heard the tinkle of a tiny bell", and was surrounded by butterflies that saved my life. I had just cast Mephetic Cloud, and I am not worshipping Xom.

Ah, that might've been it.

Died from a single kobold's single poison needle. Damn.

I shoulda drank some potions.
That was my third best character so far :)

Playing a kolbold thief. Somehow I've ended up wearing a ring of sustenance and a cursed ring of hunger. Do they negate each other or should I start watching out for paradoxes?

Oh yes, that's the advantage of a fire elly... but wizards have better starting intelligence (really helps with spell hunger) and they're starting spells are just more... useful, somehow.  Blink allows good escape, mephitic cloud makes the early game very easy and magic dart means you don't have to run away from imps.  And in the later game you can get other spellbooks... hmm.

Actually, I suspect it's because the wizard spells are useful in the early game if you're a not very good player like me...

Yep.  ;D

Sticky Flame might be a good spell, but flame wizards are still better in almost every single way.  8)

The hardest part of the game is the beginning. The early game is so random and you start off so weak that it's easy to die. Good backgrounds (like wizards and transmuters) give you a way to eliminate the randomness. Out of my 6 games online, I only died twice before reaching the end-game.

Did you read a scroll? A scroll of random uselessness can do that. It's also possible that a creature used one. I've never seen them use scrolls before, but they've quaffed potions, invoked gods, and evoked rods before so why not scrolls.

I guess, yeah.

Also, Lair: 8 was stupidly easy.  Only a couple of Death Yaks (and Fireball does an awesome job of blowing them to hell.  Incidentally, considering that bushfire I started, I'm glad I'm not with Fedhas).

Also, I'm now perfect at casting Mystic Blast.  It feels like holding a gun right to someone's head and firing it.  On the other hand, I've been sorta neglecting my other spell skills for a while... oh well, time for a few fireballs and a bit of swiftness victory dancing.

Also, a book shop is a very, very useful thing to have in your game if you're a spellcaster.  I mean, I got Swiftness and Flight from there, as well as repel missiles and Selective Amnesia.

Also - Agnes is dead.  One of my best MDFi's has finally been avenged.  It helped that I was actually roughly the same speed as her :P.

Well, that was a horrible way to die.  Azul made me fall asleep repeatedly with an 8 headed hydra nearby.  Worse, the hydra had only a sliver of HP left...
