There's that one unique who carries a Lajatang around. It always seems to be a Lajatang of speed, for some reason.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

True. I was only thinking of how RARELY I find fruits in the dungeon.

Ustxu Iceraped the Frigid Crystal of Slaughter was a glacier titan. It was the only one of its kind. A gigantic feathered carp composed of crystal glass. It has five mouths full of treacherous teeth, enormous clear wings, and ferocious blue eyes. Beware its icy breath! Ustxu was associated with oceans, glaciers, boats, and murder.

I've met her. She nearly killed me. I forget what brand it was, but it wasn't speed that time.

Also, I managed to forget that fulsome distillation is on Fedhas' blacklist. :) Oh, well. Maybe I should memorize sticks-to-snakes to help in fights until I get to the powerful transmuter stuff.

EDIT:
Or perhaps not. Fedhas just killed me with a cloud of freezing vapor. That was a REALLY stupid way to die.

A good point...  Yeah, that is an issue.  It would be nice for Fedhas to provide some way of getting more fruit, such as a byproduct of decomposition (plants could grow out of the corpses and occasionally come bearing fruit).  Not only would it balance out his fruit-based abilities, but it would also give Spriggans a very good reason for taking up the god that seems to have almost been custom-crafted for them, thematically speaking.  As it stands now, they should stay away from him due to the way he impinges on their already fragile food supply.

Spriggans do get something like 30 oranges from a scroll of acquirement, but really...  Why spend a scroll of acquirement on fruit?

How about a carnivorous plant that would grow fruit when you feed it meat chunks. That would actually make Fedhas desirable, you could increase your supply of permafood.

I've given up on Shoals 5. It's ridiculously hard, I'll have to come back. Maybe I'll take a shot at slime now, I have a cloak of poison resistance and a cloak and amulet of item preservation. Should be interesting.

We don't want to be too liberal with giving spriggans food, since not being able to eat their kills is kind of their thing. How about an ability that uses piety to harvest fruit from plants? That way, there would be a cost, and since plants need fruit to create, you couldn't use Fedhas as a free food source in the no-food areas. The lair has naturally occurring plants aplenty.

I started some more sludge elf transmuters, and the latest one has made it to the temple. I nearly angered Fedhas again. Distilling corpses has become a reflex. I think I'll bind the spell to some less accessible key to prevent further accidents. :)

I drank some potions of mutation, and I now have carnivore, fire resistance, screaming and Str -1. Well, could have been worse.

Yeah, not really sure how great a match Fedhas is for a transmuter.  You really want some kind of ranged attack capability (don't know if spells can pass through plants like projectiles can).

I tried out a halfling arcane marksman once, and even though it's not a recommended class (can't see why not), it worked out fairly well.  With a plant buffer or some wandering shrooms, you can work around with frailty of halflings while still popping shots off at them.  And since halflings are omnivorous and have a slowed metabolism, you not only get to save on fruit for abilities (eat meat), but you also get to save on corpses for piety (eat less often).  Halflings are also great at enchantments, which means branded slings.

It was fun.  I forget how he died.

Hmm.

One good match for a transmuter and Fedhas is Alastair's Intoxication.  It was awesomely fun confusing everything on a level with deep water, so being able to create deep water for enemies to stumble into would be even better.  And your Ice Form ability (assuming it's not blacklisted?) allows you to walk on water.

Actually, Fedhas sounds fun.  I think I'll have a go.  Maybe the rain ability would help a merfolk... enemies get to-hit penalties, you get an EV bonus?

Why is damage so random in Crawl? It took me 20 turns to kill a hobgoblin with magic dart, despite killing another one instantly in one shot earlier.  >:(

Doesnt Fedhas kind of suck, though?

TBH, I expected him to have some kind of "harvest" power that provided you with fruit. But quite the contrary. You NEED fruit to power several of his gifts, and fruit is not exactly plentiful in the first place

Fedhas is actually a pretty decent god. Certainly better than Zin, Xom and Jiyva. Fruit isn't that hard to find. You can find fruits laying on the ground, in food shops, in that garden wizlab, and if you're desperate you can use a scroll of acquirement to get some.

Yeah, not really sure how great a match Fedhas is for a transmuter.  You really want some kind of ranged attack capability (don't know if spells can pass through plants like projectiles can).

IIRC, Fedhas doesn't like fulsome distillation and any other spells that mess with corpses.

Fedhas, being a god of nature, dislikes necromancy. She's cool with pretty much everything else. I started grinding spell skills with sticks-to-snakes instead, having collected a pile of arrows, and actually got to casting ice form when the game mysteriously crashed. It's done that a couple of times now. Playing trunk, so I suppose some instability is to be expected. Well, not much progress lost.

I haven't tried, but the rain ability should be awesome with merfolk. Other people will just have to dry it with sunlight afterwards.

Also, I heard that ice form is superior to blade hands. How? From what I have tried, it feels like it does less damage. And blade hands is higher level, so intuitively it should be stronger.

Ice Form gives you bonus AC, +20% HP, and does a similar amount of damage to Blade Hands. Blade Hands is easier to cast, does slightly more damage, and dishes out non-elemental damage.

Ice form gives a base of 12 damage, plus freezing. Blade hands gives a base of 12, plus 1/4 str and 1/4 dex. So if you manage to get 20 str and 20 dex, you get 22 base damage with Blade Hands.

I'll quote myself from earlier in the thread:

Quote
Ice Form is better than Blade Hands in general. Ice Form does more damage (unless you're a Chei worshiper), slows down cold-blooded creatures, has a decent HP boost, grants poison resistance, allows you to carry more junk and it let's you swim in deep water without dying. There's a guide for sludge elf transmuters here.

3+UC base damage

Ice beast 12 dmg (ice) vs Blade hands 12 dmg + (str + dex)/4

Ice form has a freeze brand. Blade hands does more damage if you have high stats, but most transmuters focus on intelligence. Chei worshipers get a +5 bonus to Blade hands, which makes it incredibly powerful. I need to update that guide, since Dragon form has the highest damage output in the game.

Edit: I forgot to mention that Ice form is easier to cast and doesn't have Blade hands spell casting penalty.
Edit2: I corrected some of the above info.

I say, these crashes are starting to become irritating. >:( I'm in Lair:2 now, and for some reason the game is being really unstable. I haven't noticed anything specific triggering it. I'm just walking around, and suddenly the game has quit and I'm staring at the CDO main menu.

I noticed that blade hands no longer lets me throw items, meaning that once the bastards start running away, there's not much I can do to kill them. Since the latest crash wiped the part of the timeline where I memorized blade hands, I might as well try ice form next. :P

Zin is a pain in the ass, since you can't eat sentient beings. Not really worth it for the only minor gain in power you get over say TSO or Elyvilon. Zin is only really viable if you have slow metabolism, and you'll probably want poison resistance to eat the non-sentient poisonous creatures. Or if you're playing a herbivore, I guess.

My eveningstar is up to +6/+9. Weapons don't get much more powerful than that. Between a base damage of 14, 9 additional damage from enchantments, 29 strength (35 with strength invoked), and 18 maces & flails skill I'm now crushing my enemies "like a grape". I love this thing.

You might want to go for one of the spitting mutations. They're great for finishing off running enemies.
