yeah, far less stupid deaths than nethack. There are enough bad objects to make you think twice before equipping heedlessly, but few of them are true instakills. Which is good, because it reduces the frustration level.

BTW: Why do people say that stalkers are hard to play? I am finding them the easiest to play so far. You get right at the start a stealthy fighter, able to cut down all the early monsters. On top on this you get right from the start poison and enchant magic, and develop conjurations soon enough. There are not too many things in the early dungeon that you cannot mephit/poison to death, blade bond is a quite good enough spell in itself, and you should be able to get some conjuration and enchantment spells in time for the stuff that resists poison.

Here's what I do. I collect potions and scrolls, only using them in emergencies at first. I don every ring, amulet, piece of armor, and glowing weapons and armor. If any of them are cursed, I put on as much shit as possible except one, then start reading scrolls starting with the most numerous. The four most common scrolls are ID, detect curse, remove curse, and teleportation, all of which I want ID'd. Common scrolls asking for a target are usually ID. Once Identify is... identified, I use those scrolls to ID all my rings and amulets that won't auto-ID. If I've hit D:5 or so and still haven't found anything cursed, I'll sometimes read scrolls and assume any that have no effect are remove curse. The worst that can happen is you waste a scroll or your weapon gets cursed. Hell, if my weapon gets cursed, that just makes ID'ing remove curse all the easier! I just want to read scrolls so that fewer of them will be burned away before I make a stash, so I'm carrying less weight, and so I know which scroll is Teleportation.

You can unambiguously ID all scrolls as long as there's something undead nearby (holy word), something that can be tormented (torment), an object in your inventory that isn't curse-tested (detect curse), a wielded or worn cursed piece of armor (remove curse), a piece of armor that's not already max-enchanted and isn't cursed (enchant armor and curse armor), a wielded, uncursed, non-naturally-branded weapon not max-enchanted (enchant weapon I, II, and III, curse weapon, and vorpalize weapon), a wand or weapon of electrocution not at max charges or enchantment (recharging), at least one visible open floor (fog, summoning, and sometimes random uselessness (although fog might ID if it only fogs the square you're on), and no Silence effect on you at the time (noise, silence, and sometimes random uselessness). If you miss-target with a scroll asking for a target, you either tried to enchant armor a wand or recharge a piece of armor. I usually pick armor unless I think it's still ID. I'd rather have the AC, so I'm more willing to risk a recharge than an enchant armor.

The worst that can happen from reading a scroll is immolation. Immolation doesn't burn scrolls and only does about 40 or 50 damage, more than survivable by the time they start showing up. Don't worry about immolation.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

ATM I'm a level nine sludge elf transmuter that's pretty much a melee fighter and I found this:

Quote
the cursed - Robe "Grezu" {EV+5 Int+4 Curse}
It affects your evasion +5
If affects your inteligance +4
It may recurse itself.

Right now I just have the +0 robe. I don't know if it's worth swapping over of not  :o

Any thoughts?

OOPS! I forgot the important part!

Quote
the cursed -5 Robe "Grezu" {EV+5 Int+4 Curse}

It may recurse itself.

Lol, numlock was off. The robe is -5.

Not worth it since you lose shapeshifting. Sure, you can still use blade hands, but sometimes you just need ice form.

Hm with that -5 its not worth it. Also the shapeshifting thing, I'd forgotten that.

Good point about the shapeshifting.

This is the first time I've done well (for me) with a shapeshifter. Who is now part fire elementalist thanks to the book of flame I found. And Sif Muna just gave me a book with Dragon Form in it. It sounds exciting, I think I might turn transmutations back on. Thanks for the help :)

I never got to actually use it, but I hear Dragon Form is utter crap. Good damage, but horrible AC and EV. From what I gather you should aim for Statue Form, and much later Necromutation.

Didn't get to use it before I died. =(

I've read in a couple places that the Hive should be completed before the mines. I think I'm gunna have to stop trying to that though, I keep dying on D14 or something like that. Atleast this time it was a Dragon that killed me so I feel ok about it. I found Blade Hands to be extremely useful and I WOULD have found spider form great if it wasn't for the way I seemed to always have something cursed on me. Ice form was good for poisen things but in general it wasn't as good as Blade Hands. I think the icey armour thing helped but it still wasn't the best... The worst thing was the weight limit, gosh damn!

The nice thing about Ice Form is that it lets you carry more stuff. I stayed constantly in that form just to lug my junk around (I'm a pack rat). That, and you're a bit more sturdy than when you're using Blade Hands.

I've been distilling ugly thing corpses into potions of mutation. According to my knowledge sources, they give three random mutations while mutagenic chunks only give one. I'm not sure whether I should use them, however, since I only have one potion of cure mutation stashed away. Well, I think I'll drink them anyway, and just hope I won't get any of the REALLY terrible ones. Mutations are fun! :D

Also, I found a curious structure in D:12. Undiggable stone walls, with archer statues outside. Upon defeating the archer statues, I found that inside is a winding passage that forces me into melee range with warrior statues, two at once. There seems to be absolutely no information available on warrior statues. I think I'll try to penetrate it invisible.

EDIT: Well, the potions mostly cancelled each other out. :( I ended up curing everything to get rid of rotting and berserkitis.

EDIT: There was a silver statue that surrounded me with demons. I managed to teleport away, but I was seriously magic-contaminated in the process. After a couple of explosions and a two more potions of mutation (not the best strategic choice, I admit), I now have fangs 1, berserk 1, clarity, herbivore 2, slow healing 1, and some bone plates giving me +2 to AC and SH. I am seriously considering just legging it to the surface before I starve to death. I never wanted that stupid orb anyway!

Plus, with an elephant, you really only need to caulk a couple places. They start out pretty watertight.

Sif and Vehument are both good for any magic user. Kikuwhatshisface, the god of undeath, is probably a good choice as well, although I haven't used him myself.
