Have you tried (a) and (?) to load the abilities menu? I think that blood bottling counts as an ability.

I am not saying that necromancy doesnt have useful spells, just that starting off as a necro/death knight is particularily tough, as you lack any decent spells early on. The soonest you can get vampiric draining is level 3, IIRC, and it's not that good to begin with (close range, not too damaging...). Zombie spam is quite sweet, but you have to be at least level 4 (5 if you took raise skeleton, which is a must-have for early  survival, bad as it is), and you have to get the corpses somehow, obviously. I got there right now, but mostly because of blind luck (right after spawning I stumbled upon a sabre of draining)

In my best Vampire necromacer run follower of Kikubaaqudgha (mostly for the corpse it provides then for the Necronomicon without having to search for it), i found some of the necro spells to be awesome

The summon skeleton and undead are rather useless as offensive summons, they're just usefull when you attract someone in a floor and bring it with you to the previous floor, with your zombies waiting around the stairs.

At low level, Pain is what to use mostly even if it can damage yourself, when facing some possible threat at level 1 it serves its purpose.

Now Vampiric Draining is a truly excellent spell, of course not if facing demon or undead, it saved my character a lot, allowing me to kill some ogre when i was not yet at a level that could take them directly.

The dispel undead spell is usually great, especially when going through Crypt it does wonders.

Twisted Resurrection has been my favorite for a long time, as it is the 1st necromancy spell that allows the summon to actually follow your necromancer through stairs.

And once you get your hands on the Necronomicon, Haunt is nothing short of fantastic, this is the spell that allowed my character to defeat the Ancient Lich in Crypt, very powerfull summons though temporary unlike Twisted Resurrection, they do wonder as you need no corpse at all.

OK, is this a bug or what? I'm a level 8 vampire enchanter, it said I can bottle blood, when I mouseover a corpse it says that shift + lclick is bottling blood, but when I try to do it I just chop up the corpse into meat chunks. Stone Soup 0.6.0.0
I think it got changed around 6 or so. Used to be the 'c'hop command, now an 'a'bility. Whatever GUI you use is probably just behind in development.

Multiple ghosts. How horrible. But I killed them. I killed them all. Muahahahhaha!

No more ghosts on that level, and I'm further than I've ever been. Fire Wizard's are awesome.
I have every single spell from the starter book, and just started following Sif Muna. Yay!
Also, I have a staff of fire, multiplying the damage all my fire spells my fire wizard does. Yay!

I'm a level 8 on D:6.

Yeah, but vampires are kind of exempted from the "harsh start". ;)

Anyway, yeah, I am not saying that necro spells are useless, just that the lot that you get handed when you start as a necro are pretty bad.  Kikorivera is definitively the god of choice for necros, imho.

ATM I want to semi-roleplay a human crusader (or maybe a stalker). Lone survivor of a military expedition to reclaim the Amulet of Yendor (or however this game's macguffin is called), he eventually embraces the faith of Kikorivera to learn the dark arts of necromancy

So yeah, poison kicks ass in the early game.

In fact I think it's a very good gateway to jump from stalker or poison wizard into necromancy. Plus, your two early game steamrollers are undead friendly

Pain actually does a heck of a lot of damage, and most low-level monsters will fall to it quite easily (even ogres will succumb after a few castings, all depending on your skill in Necromancy).  The only real lacking point I found was in regards to imps...   They're utterly immune to it, which makes them even more annoying for necromancers.

However, Deep Dwarves also have an easy early game as necromancers, since they don't get the feedback effect of Pain, and can thus cast it at will.  Vampiric Draining is a great way of combating the Deep Dwarf lack of regeneration.  I'd argue to stay away from minor summons like skeletons and zombies, unless you really need them for some reason.  I managed to get surprisingly far with a DDNe without ever using any summoning spells.  I'd cast the pain brand spell on my weapon, and then head in for some toe-to-toe for the weaker monsters, supplementing my torturous weapon with Vampiric Draining.  Beefier combatants got the Pain treatment from afar.

And this game's item is the Orb of Zot.  And Kikubaaqudgha is still Kikubaaqudgha.  Kiku for short, because no one can possibly remember how to spell the whole damn thing.

Can anyone here give me tips on the beginning of the game?
That guy who got to Lair:1 (which BTW was killed while read-iding scrolls. I had tons and tons of stuff that I needed to stash. That was the first game where I was encumbered once.

dont you hate it when you lose a great start due to hubris?

IE: right now, I had a level 4 stalker, with a poison-brand short sword, and I lose it because I decided to lock heads with an orcish priest.

The funny thing was, I was utterly PWNing all the orc wizards. With poison protection, I can tell it would be a breeze. Damn telescroll teleported me into the middle of lair. Teleport traps are actually the worse for me. I perfer to go in a circle around the entrance, so I can run away if need be. :-P

I thought you couldn't equip vampiric weapons unless you were satiated? Maybe that's only in Trunk.

My latest is a lv.8 Sludge Elf Transmuter. It's going pretty well. I've found a bunch of spellbooks lying around, but they haven't had many spells that are both useful and can be cast by me reliably. Found a ring of poison resistance, so I can eat kobolds and hurl potions of poison in melee. Haven't found temple yet. A shaft dropped me three levels down, to D:11, but I managed to barely escape with my life.

Does Maxwell's Silver Hammer work on staves? It'd be a decent spell to train earth magic with. Summon Elemental becomes reliable at around 8 earth magic, right?

There were something called "demonic crawlers" on D:6. Are those nasty? They sounded pretty nasty to me.

I am having an odd problem. I have been playing with everything going fine for a while, but all of a sudden, today I started suffering from massive slowdown problems in Dungeon Crawl. Very odd.
