Xom must really like you :D
Possible that the hammer as you said, with the chaotic random effects is actually improving his stance regarding you a very lot.
Hopefully avoiding the very bad effects.

Maybe you got a winner of a character with that hammer, if it manage to get Xom that entertained.

You just have to know very well what you're doing, is all. See e.g., the second highest scorer in last August's C.A.O tourney. He managed a win with every (and no) deity available at the time. Admittedly, there was only one other person in the top ten who won with Xom, so you're not wrong in calling it a pain.

See also: C.A.O's highest score for a Xom win (and 11th highest overall).
Impressive, i can't think of any way to win the game with any of my characters there's always a breaking point in which some enemies are convenientely hitting where my resistance is the lowest, and the guy won many time !
And winning with Xom on top of this !

Its a bit annoying sometimes. Last fight against a Yak the first hit enraged the Yak, the second hit made it invisible, the third hit healed it, and the fourth hit confused it. x.x

Edit: Xom just gave me 25 stones. Yay

Edit2: And a scroll of paper! ... then he cast me into the abyss.

I made it out of the abyss and back on track, but in lair 2 I was fighting a hound and Xom polymorphed it into an ice dragon. I died.

Fun run though!

Wait, the game is winnable with Xom? What foreign planet are you on!

Xom once gave me like six thousand gold on dungeon:2. I died before I found a shop, though. I think it might have been Xom demons. :P

Speaking of Xom, he was being sneaky and conspiring against me on my last run with him. I had been running around trying all the glowing weapons without identifying them, and everything had been going well up to the point that I found a greatsword of distortion on D:2. It was great fun one-shotting things left and right and blinking them all over the place. So much fun that Xom rewarded me by transforming me into an ice beast.

Ice Beasts cannot hold swords.

The sword fell of of my hands, into my pack, and the next thing I know, I'm running through the abyss with a pack of demons on my tail. Lesson learned. The happier Xom is with you, the more likely you are to die.

Ah... back to Deep Elf Summoner.

Getting Summon Butterflies early on is actually really useful... almost nothing can chase after you.

...Can anyone think of a reason why I can wield a Great Mace?

Looking back over the two tourney Xom wins I cited, the first is actually pretty unimpressive. They just worshiped no deity, got the Orb, and picked up Xom when passing the temple on the way out. IOW, they followed Xom for a whole 55 turns. The second one, however... they took up Xom as soon as they found the Temple, around turn 7300 (of 75000) or so.

Say...  Do Xom's demonic "parties" count as summoned creatures?  If so...  Abjuration.

Seems to be that hostile demon groups are the primary cause of Xom-based death, and from the looks of things he has no qualms about summoning disturbingly large groups of them.  If abjuration works, then it's essentially a one-stop shop to safety (provided you're a skilled enough summoner).

I'm sure Xom has an answer to Abjuration. Probably a gift of a lovely blade hands transmute or something similar.

The answer is sometimes.

I just finished playing 12000 turns of xom-fun. It seems he had an equal chance of gating in friendly demons as he does hostile, and sometimes they act like summoned creatures and poof after a while but sometimes they stick around for good.

Xom loves to animate your weapon. I dunno if you can Abjure that away.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

That is a bit of a bugger...  Only thing that would be foolproof against that would be to fight unarmed.  Dunno if he'd make you strangle yourself though...

In which case, I think it would be worth the loss of a character just to get that death message.  Talk about bragging rights.

In my recent run, trying again a Minotaur chaos knight from Xom, at some point he summoned a friendly Hellwing when i was level 7.
It proved to be a formidable ally as it was much more strong than anything i encountered until unfortunately i tried 2 scrolls to know what they did : an immolation one followed by one that created some black smoke that killed several undead the Hellwing liked to summon.
This hurt the Hellwing feeling apparently as he decided to attack me on the spot.
Fortunately, i had a bunch of good wands (and health potions) that allowed me to destroy my former ally that was too powerfull for me if i had only my own strength to deal with.

Overall it was a fun run, again Xom transformed me into a Lich very early.
Later he transformed me into a giant spider (good i was fighting hobgoblin at the time).

It was a good run, as i even managed to kill Sigmund that i encounter in a small room full of hobgoblin armed with Scythes like him, a very nice "Sigmund and his followers" setup i never saw in any of my previous run.

I poisonned myself a bit with potions, trying to get Xom amused, but only when i was over 35 health, so i knew i could evacuate the poison before being killed.

In a previous run i made the stupid mistake of drinking such potion when i was only level 2, the guy died before his body neutralized the poison.
