Xom will still cheerfully teleport a ring of hostile demons around you, and other hilarious things like that, but there's at least a theoretical chance to avoid death somehow. It's not Xom's fault if you don't happen to have blink scrolls.

I wonder if anyone has actually won while worshiping Xom. He's fun, but too random.

Heh, for every possible race-class-god combination there is some Chosen One who's gotten to the orb and back. But yeah, Xom isn't really for people who worry about long-term things. I suppose you could stick with him long enough to get some sweet mutations and god gift gear, and then abandon. I've wanted to try that, if only to test if Xom's divine wrath is any different from His normal behaviour. :P

Yes, playing with Xorn require a lot of luck, much more than any other characters, as sometime you have good gifts, but sometime they are bad, extremely bad, though funny.

An example with a minotaur chaos knight i played, and that died at level 4 from a zombie goldfish that i thought i could kill (as i killed one just before easily).
These ones happened before the minotaur reached level 4 :

The 2 following ones at only level 2 (temporary lich form and turning every wall in a large zone into glass)

I got a "god gift" early too : a +0 cloak ... without any kind of power at all.

I can't imagine anyone managing to grab the orb of zot and ascending without the most extreme luck ever. Probably someone managing this feat wasted all his luck for his entire lifetime unfortunately :D

You just have to know very well what you're doing, is all. See e.g., the second highest scorer in last August's C.A.O tourney. He managed a win with every (and no) deity available at the time. Admittedly, there was only one other person in the top ten who won with Xom, so you're not wrong in calling it a pain.

See also: C.A.O's highest score for a Xom win (and 11th highest overall).

Started a level 1 mummy chaos knight of Xom

Killed a cockroach

Got a randart hammer.

"The Hammer of Plutism". +4 evasion, +2 strength, resist fire, resist poison, rage in combat, and has the chaos effect so it does a random spell effect every hit.

I'm going to guess that your Amulet prevented Xom from inflicting a slow effect.

Well so far the chaos hammer has kept Xom well and truely amused, as it seems to love making my enemies invisible or mighty or healing them.

at least he hasn't smited me or something.

He did make my feet glow, dunno what that was about.
