As a deep dwarf, if you find a spellbook with vampiric draining in it, it may be worthwhile to train necromancy. A few levels of it would greatly improve your ability to heal, just fight, when your damaged but "safe", travel up to the early floors and start draining bats and hobgobs.

Wandererers are...playable?
I die on the first level with every one of mine.  ::)

Ah sometime good luck happen in Stone Soup, it's rare but when it does it is satisfying.

Am playing a Kobold Assassin, that comes with a blowgun and some usefull poison needles.
On the travel i picked up even more of those needles and used them very well in hit&run tactics.

Then while being at level 4, i was exploring the 2nd floor (surprised that my kobold went that high in level that quick) and saw ... Sigmund in the end of a corridor.
There was the whole screen of distance between him and me, so i decided to use the blowgun and throw 4 or 5 poisonned needles that did not miss and all hit him.

Sigmund was poisonned, but i doubted it would kill him, and at level 4 i would have prefered to not go in contact with the miserable dagger i had.

It was time he used something to blast me and missed.
I ran to the nearest stairs (that were too far away) thinking about what kind of character to play next, as i would certainly be hit by his blast sooner or later, when Sigmund blasted me , and it was a confusion rod.

So it was clearly the end, just before reaching me Sigmund became invisible and because of the confusion i was hopeless while evil invisible Sigmund hit me very hard.

Near death, and out of scrolls, i decided to drink the 2 potions, hoping for a health one, and the 2nd one was one !
Good health, good as it came in place just when Sigmund hit my kobold again hard.
With him close to me and the stairs too far, i was sadly sure to die in a turn or two, when ... "you reached level 5" and next to me there was a dead corpse and a scythe ?

The poison ! i forgot the 4/5 needles that hit him earlier, they finally did their job !
Lucky early Sigmund take down, very satisfying.

If you poison something badly enough, all you have to do is run away.

Running from an invisible super Sigmund is hard.

Trust me, I've died running away from Sigmund. Sometimes the level is just tailor made for fleeing from him. Sometimes he's in an Orc Mines like level. Nobody will look down on you if you skip the entire level he's on. I've done it, you've done it, we've all done it.

Not all...I'm stupid like that. The only level I have ever skipped was a summoner ghost. Oh my those things are scary. Almost as scary as Sigmund.

By the time I've decided to run, it's too late.

If you learn when you aren't able to kill Sigmund and flee as soon as you see him, you might live longer. The same is true for any monster or branch in the entire game, by the way.

I think i met Sigmund 95% of the time on floor 2.
So usually on floor 2 my characters are never powerfull enough to take him out, so the only good survival move is to run away, skipping the level for coming back later.

The only exception is if i found a very good wand early, believe me being lucky to find a wand of fire and burning that damned Sigmund to ash , while you are not more than a level 2 character is very satisfying ;)

In the case of my kobold, it was the fact he was good with poisonned needles, so i experimented, unfortunately, even at level 4 the kobold would have died from this encounter if he had not been lucky to have a healing potion with him to wait for the poison to make its work.

The problem with Sigmund is when you flee, you must be sure to have 4/5 tiles between him and you, or you'll never reach the stairs before he is finished with blasting you from afar.
And hope he does not have a confusion rod, or you will never be able to escape.

Most of my Sigmund death nowadays are from having him appearing in +/- 3 tiles from me, far from a stair and out of teleportation/blinking scroll.

The three curare needles assassins get can kill most anything on the first couple of levels. They poison AND slow! :D

And wanderers are sometimes playable. You can get some pretty sweet starting gear, or find some pretty sweet gear lying in the first level, and not run into anything too strong too early. And if you survive the first couple of levels, you've pretty much caught up with people who had optimized skills from the beginning.

I tried another random wanderer, and got a halfling magician. I've found a randart hammer with {drain, *rage MR EV+4}, but I don't use it much because the raging is a bit unpredictable. Because the random number god loves redundancy, I also got an amulet of rage. I memorized blink from my starting spellbook, and it's listed in bold yellow. What does that mean?

Blink is always yellow...no clue why.

Holy crap, Agnes is badass! I met her at lvl 14, while in ice form with 10 unarmed and 15 dodging. I summoned a veritable horde of scorpions, but they couldn't even touch her. Evaporating potions of confusion managed to confuse her just once out of 5 tries. Toxic radiance and evaporated strong poison barely took her down to half health. I was blinking and confusing (unsuccessfully) for a while, but I ran out of HP and healing potions quickly. I guess I got a bit cocky after clearing Orc Mines, Lair and Hive (god bless Ice Form), but still, I think she's hardly an appropriate encounter for Snake 1. It was like Sigmund in Dungeon 1.

My Kobold Assassin is really fun to play, and he is always alive.
I took early Okawaru, as i was hoping to get the early god-gifts and get a better dagger than the one i use for backstabbing (great fun to approach stealthly those monsters and one-hit kill them).
Though with several enchant weapon scrolls it is stated now at +6,+6

But Okawaru seems to be obssessed in sending 2 or 3 needles each time.
Though at some point he sent me 10 +4 Dispersal darts that seemed nice, until i understood with bad luck they were actually teleporting the hit target a bit too close to you for comfort.

I continue to hope to get some good backstabbing tool.
But it is great fun to not be really bothered by hunger, as the kobold can eat at anytime like a Troll, while being less prone to hunger than them.
And the stealth-Backstab is great, managed to approach Nergalle and backstab him nearly to death, then use the dagger a few more time to kill him before his usual big demons summoning spam.

edit :
edit : take it back about Okawary being not really nice so far in his gifts.

The  very few needles packs i got were awesome, managed to poison Gastronok at a distance and have him nearly dead before he could summon anything, and using the geography of the floor that was very good for once to keep me out of his eyes, i managed to approach him and hit him a few time with the dagger (as he had lost lots of health due to poison while i approached) and kill that monster.

Got his hat, awesome hat , will be good when i will try to cast a spell later :
