Yeah, that spell is awesome. Accurate, non-elemental damage, and lots of it. Go ahead, learn it and spam it. It's amazing against ghosts, dancing weapons, and insubstantial wisps. It's great against everything else.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

Damn.

I beat the heck out of one Orcish wizard and 2 orcs...(I was a Merfolk Transmuter). I had a cursed sling from a scroll, and ~12 stones left.

So, I beat them...then around the corridor comes ANOTHER wizard and orc. I use one of my last potions, a confusion potion. Then I fling all 3 of my healing potions, and it doesn't work. I run in circles forever, up some stairs, and get killed by low level spawns because I had no ammo for my sling.

Also, does the trunk version not have a temple? If so, I am very unhappy.

I started a vampire fire elementalist, just for the hell of it. Doing okay so far. Found a nifty randart robe (+4 +Blink rN+ Int+1 Stlth+). Memorized Sticky Flame, murdering everything with it. Can't noticeably damage the imps, but since they blink all over the place, running away is easy. Now I'm having trouble with green rats in Lair:1. Are they resistant/immune to fire or something?

Also, what does it mean when a spellbook is "beyond my skills"? Need more Spellcasting to read it? I've found two of those so far. Can't remember this happening back in version five.

That remind me of a run in which i nearly found sling stones in every dungeon floors. The only problem is that i found no sling at all :D

I guess the character may need more spellcasting level or intelligence, as while my necromancer is mostly only skilled in Necromancy, he has a good Spellcasting skill and so far have been able to read every books.

Have been toying a bit around vampire necromancers in wizard mode to see what kind of combinations of spells would be the most efficient for my serious run with them.
At some point i recieved a gift from Kikubaaqudgha, "The book of Unlife" and testing "Twisted Resurrection" i found it frankly great :
Just assemble 3 corpses, launch the spell and you may obtain a large abomination or if small corpses an abomination.
To see what was a minimum assembling of small corpses necessary for a large abomination, i tried to assemble 4 grey rats corpses and got a large one.

And those, unlike the stupid 0.5.0/0.6.0 nerfed zombies and skeletons are actually able to follow you through the stairs.
On top of the nice news, the large abominations can hit really very hard, 40 damages by hit !
In the lair, one of them solo-ed a Hydra and killed it.

Seems like Vampiric Regenarations and Twisted Resurrection are really good for a necromancer, the big cons for Twisted Resurrection is that it comes with a high level spell book, so unless you are lucky to find it on the ground, it may come after 8/9 levels from a Kikubaaqudgha gift (assuming of course you have not found Kikubaaqudgha altar late in game), you'll have to deal with the half useless animate dead/corpse to build you meat shield.

That means it's either the Book of Annihilations, the Book of Demonology, or the Necronomicon. You need 6 Spellcasting skill along with 10 Conjurations for Annihilations, 10 Summonings for Demonology, or 10 Necromancy for the Necronomicon. If you worship Vehumet, you can always read Annihilations and Demonology and if you worship Kiku, you can always read the Necronomicon.

I always seem to find the Necronomicon and never any of the other ones. Of course the one I would want is the book of Demonology because I would be able to use that.

Well, I don't think I'd be able to cast anything from those books for a long time, anyway. I picked Sif Muna, so I guess I'll just hang on to them, if only to death-identification to find out what they could have done. :P I'm still a bit stumped regarding why did I find TWO of these things in early dungeon levels. The random number god works in mysterious ways.

Oh, and speaking of Sif Muna, being able to spam the Energy Channeling without worrying about starving to death is pretty awesome. Sure, the regeneration rate goes down, but I can still remain operational for however long it takes to stumble upon some more edible monsters. And I get more resistances, and a stealth bonus, so killing monsters to eat becomes easier as well.

The ONLY time I have ever had those books spawn for me was early levels.

Same, I haven't managed to use any of those three before.  Although I did get the Mystic Blast through a Sif gift with a fire elementalist, which owned.

He suffered a similar fate to all the rest of my squishy characters - chased down by a few black mambas unable to stop them quickly enough.

I've gotten a shitton of spellbooks from Sif Muna, but still can't read the two Mystery ones. Thanks for the tip on Mystic Blast, it seems pretty cool. I just cleared the Orcish Mines, found the Labyrinth and killed the minotaur. My most recent problem is that I've never gotten this far, and I'm not sure what I should do next. Deeper to the main dungeon? Elven halls? Lower Lair levels, and any sub-branches?

Also, I'm starting to have trouble carrying things.

Also, also, which of the more powerful spells are good? So far, I've been torching everything with liquid flame, but I just noticed I've trained magic enough to get Fireball to "good" success rate, and I expect enemies will grow stronger the deeper I go.

Fireball is cool if the enemy dodges or if they're in a crowd.  Seriously, torching a flock of sheep was the funnest thing I've ever done on DC.

Is it just me, or have Spriggan Assassins been MAJORLY upgraded in this release (or maybe a slightly earlier one)?  Previously I was running away from kobolds in terror, but now I can quite comfortably kill most early monsters in a toe to toe fight.  This'd also be the first time I've got one to the temple... hmm... what god to choose?  It seems odd, but as far as I can tell, Okawaru is the best choice.  I mean, I can give him the bodies of everything I can kill, haste should be very useful and I might finally be able to use one of the god gift slings that Okawaru always gives my MDFis.

Do Lair. Don't do any of the sub branches until you're prepared. rP or Clarity and Lev for Swamp, Lev for Shoals, rP for Snake, and for Slime you'll need tons of randarts, rCorr, rMut, and a high level. Oh, and a wand of digging.

I've been a big fan of Orb of Destruction. It one-shots Iron Trolls for fuck's sake. Learn Abjuration ASAP and Mephitic Cloud if you have the spell levels. Other than that, I'd have to see what spells you have available for learning before I feel like commenting. I would recommend learning some spells in another school, though. Once you hit Bolt of Fire, you don't really need more Fire Magic skill.

Well, I managed to die, so it doesn't matter right now, but thanks anyway. It was silly. Got surrounded by some frogs, and suddenly I had no more hitpoints left. Oh, well. I suppose I'll eventually learn not to let my guard down whenever I'm doing good.

I am wondering, would people be interested by some kind of "succession" game, in which someone start with a random character, play until he gains 2 levels, post the save game, then someone follow, take the save game and play until he gains 2 levels, post the save game etc... ?

I understand that in the context of Dungeon Crawl perma death and Sigmund ;) , it would become difficult to achieve this, but trying to avoid that death could be fun.

Well the way we performed succession games of crawl was we took a character and traveled a number of "turns" before we passed it on to the next person. Doing it by levels would get longer and longer as time progressed and eventually would be useless when you hit level 27. Especially if your going to go sight seeing and Hell and Pandemonium.

Speaking of my experience. Just tried 6.0 with my Kenku fire elementalist....

All I can say is... games proven to have gotten harder compared to before hand, or I'm out of practice. Plus the Shoals seems like a whole new level of difficulty as your constantly being scewered by Merpeople. I have no idea how many javilins I had been dodging as of this point, but it's insane.... at least I was flying constantly at this point, so I didn't have to deal with the tide killing me.

Course following my routine I was hoping to go down to the bottom of the Dungeon before running back up to deal with the last floor of the Vault (I hate dealing with the Vault guards unless I'm truly prepared.) to get the rune.

Sadly a teleport trap was what killed me...

Because it threw me in the middle in most insane area of the floor. A place where there were tons of Stone Giants, a storm dragon, a shadow dragon and a Titan. And with no blink scrolls.... I was screwed as I was stone and bolted to death.
