They also sometimes get their spells upgraded. If the character knew Agony, the ghost casts Symbol of Torment. Oh, and ghosts are immune to torment. I think they also get some free EV, since they're a lot harder to hit than a character with 6 EV should be.

When the devteam adds a Wand of Mystic Blast, things will be better. A Wand of Dispel Undead would work fine, too. I'm still not sure why Holy Word was in scroll form and not wand form.

EDIT: The game came so close to making a randart of Nirur_Torir.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

This ring occasionally exerts it's power to randomly translocate it's wearer to another place, and it can be deliberately activated for the same effect.

It affects your AC (+4).
It affects your evasion (-3).
It affects your accuracy (+2).

Most back-handed artifact ever? Found on DL5.

Summoners are AWESOME.

The small mammals deal with most things, and the imps deal with the rest, at least for these early levels.  If your small mammals aren't working, you just summon imps until you get an ice imp (seems to kill almost anything) or a shadow imp (kills almost anything from a distance and raises the corpse).

And if things go really wrong you just retreat through your sea of spammed summons while the monster tries and fails to fight its way through to you.

Also, the small mammal spell seems to have NO hunger cost.  Which is awesome.

Hunger cost depends on spellcasting skill and probably on your intelligence as well. It's pretty easy to start a deep elf wizard who reaches 0 hunger cost in all starting-book spells rather quickly.

Or just play a mummy and say "screw you hunger".

Or a vampire, for that matter. And spriggans hardly need to eat, although they can't eat meat.

Mummies are a little problematic. They can survive indefinitely while still regenerating and not eating food, yet they pretty much suck at everything and level extremely slowly.

http://crawl.chaosforge.org/index.php?title=Spell_hunger

Without the chart, you multiply your intelligence by your spellcasting ability, and the hunger cost gets dropped by that much. That means that once you start getting high skill, int boosting items are better if food is a problem.

This is weird.  All my deaths as summoner have been EXTREMELY lame.

I've had being one shotted by a spore (33 out of 33 health... goddamnit), poisoned to death several times and randomly knocked out by a kobold.  It seems a summoner's worst enemy is random chance due to poor hp and defence.

The spore one was extra annoying as I had just learnt Call Canine Familiar, an awesome spell.

Yea, spores need to either be nerfed or show up much later in the dungeon. I had one one shot a death knight at 40ish health through chain (not sure if that would matter though). Same thing goes for ghosts, I had a chaos knight run over by a death knight ghost two levels lower than he was. But then, it's a roguelike, it's not exactly "fair".

That summoner ghost was weird... he summoned demons, even though I've never had a summoner who can summon demons.  Luckily, it turns out spammals beat demons - I created a shield of random garbage around me, used imps to take out the ghost and then let the enemies demons time out as they failed to penetrate my wall.

Also, Summon Butterflies is a godly escape spell.

When i played with a summoner, i had lot of fun with the summon Imp spell.
Sometime one of the possible Imp variant summoned was summoning things too, leading us in funnily overpowering even stronger foes, took out a hill giant thanks to that.

But about spores, those things are even more annoying than centaurs.
It was what killed that character, 2 spores were "rushing" to us, the first one exploded and took out my summons badly wounded me without my spells being able to destroy it first, the 2nd one killed my character that was already badly wounded from the 1st spore.

That was annoying to have your character fighting named foes, magic users, orcs, imps and whatever other monsters just in the end to be killed by a stupid spore, that's just so underwhelming as a situation.

Shadow imps revive dead skeletons, adding to your spammal army. My first summoner got farther than any of my other peeps. This is awesome. The only reason I died was because I tried spamming imps instead of animals, which doesn't work too well.

Mana as a summoner is a problem. Kind of annoying really.

I lost my last summoner to absentmindedly walking down a corridor and not realizing I had walked into an orc wizard. God I hate enemy casters.

Darts of Reaping turn people into zombies? or was that just my shadow imps.

Also, Mana is no problem for my Dark Elves...I just spam tons of mammals, and regain MP just as fast as they disappear/die.

Imps are awesome though
