Check your abilities. Bat mode is great as a vamp, since your faster then pretty much everything.

Except other bats. Learned that the hard way.

Urgh, hate when you die to something completely out of your control. I came downstairs and was surrounded by giant ants, which my summonings could barely hurt at all. I almost escaped... and ran into another. I wish this game at least allowed saving against these things, I'm getting very tired of going through the same three levels over and over again every time I get dumped on by the RNG.

Well, it's a roguelike. If you could savescum, where would the fun be?

Also, has anyone ran into a strange glass vault-thing where there are blasts of cold air that kill you super quick if you get the timing wrong? Don't bother trying to Blink out of them, you just get thrown into the area that gets blasted.

But then, life was also easier when I was running around here pretending to be a man, so I guess I should just "man up" and get back to work.

The wizard summing book has blink which is trans 2 for escape. Also spammals is my escape spell especially is it can summon 2 animals because that is at least 2 attacks that are not coming at you so you can run away and head toward some stairs or just run till you can cast again.

For early levels try to get an elvish robe. They have the lowest spell failure for low level armor unless you are one of the other races with their own named armor.

So it seems I accidentally put my canteen in my wheelbarrow and didn't notice... and then I got really thirsty... so right before going to sleep I go to take a swig from my canteen and... end up snorting a line of low-grade meth.

I skip that vault, generally. I'll come back for it when I have a lot more health and possibly some rC.

Quick update for the one guy still interested:

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

How do you tell how much spell failure a piece of armor has?

Go back up the stairs.

I don't think there's a way except checking your spell list (for chance of success) both before and after.

I honestly don't understand how people play the Tiles distribution of this. The screen resolution is huge and the tiles themselves look really horrible. It's much less intelligible than the ASCII is.

Have you ever had a blink frog all of the sudden appear out of nowhere right next to you after you have taken down something tough and are low on health and minions? Let me tell you it sucks. I had just had my first Bazaar to.

It gets worse: Blink Frogs are pack animals. They're always more than 1 of them.

Being able to tell at a glance what things are is handy.

Being able to tell at a glance what things are is handy.

I can do this easier in ASCII because the tiles in the tiles version are really poorly designed. There's no sense of scale to them at all, or perspective, and the tiles don't even look like they combine to form a continuous map: They literally look like mosaic tiles like you'd find on the floor of a building or something. Half of them barely even look like what they're supposed to look like. Overcomplicating the graphics doesn't really help, at any rate.

I understand why people are sort of afraid of graphics, but there's no real need to be, especially when there's a big monster list right on the side of the screen saying what everything is on the screen at any particular point in time. I mean, even if a Blue-Fisted Gunk Troll is just a blue "t" in the game, and I've never seen one before, I still know what it is on the same turn it shows up, because it's in the onscreen creature list. Having to figure it out from looking at badly-designed graphics is no better. It clutters the screen a lot more with no real benefit.
