Also, magic dart is a very useful spell, since AFAIK, it can't miss.

I prefer just to stick with summoning spells because you can get it reasonably high quickly if you do. The last guy I posted here was only level 10 but had level 13 summoning.

the canine almost never summons hostile at that point.

I believe they took out hostile canine summons in the new version.

Sweat! that means I can use it and not die. Better go learn it on my current guy, a nice purple Draconian(just reach level 7).

Quick update: I've cleared out Snake, Swamp, Hive, Orc, Blade, Crypt, and Vaults:1-7. I'm working on Elf right now. Boris and Xtuaha are dead.

Should I buy +2 Ice Dragon armor, save up for an antique randart Storm Dragon armor, or continue wearing +0 Mottled Dragon armor? I'm leaning towards the Ice Dragon armor since I have rF++ but no rC.

I'm worried that the heavy dragon armors will impede my spellcasting a lot. Everything's at Excellent or Perfect, but I only have 1 Armor skill.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

Also, Summon Small Mammals only summons two at a time now, maximum, and they don't last terribly long. I think it might not summon as many types now, either. I just see rats/grey rats/quokkas/giant bats, I think.

It's still surprisingly powerful if you can slow/confuse a monster and then surround him with pests while you run the hell away and figure out what else to do.

Yah, They nerfed spammals so it only summons 2 and no longer summons the orange and green rats.

I've pretty much given up on starting casters for now. As much as summoners (wizard or summoner builds) go, it's really hard to survive an RNG dump - sometimes a swarm of 9 spammals will cut a worm to pieces, otherwise the opposite is true, sometimes three summons produce one animal, etc. I know they get stronger as their skills go up and become more reliable, but it's a pain to have to restart every few levels because 12 spammals failed to kill a simple snake, who then hit you four times in a row through splint mail armor.

So I'm back to Vampire Death Knight. You get decent summoning from your deity, who doesn't care whether you raise or eat your victims, lots of food, good regen if you can keep your thirst down, and good fighting skills as a death knight. Worked well last time, until I decided to try the orc mines (urgh, went downstairs into a den of 35 of them... not pretty).

What are you doing wearing splint mail as a starting caster? That'll seriously lower your spellcasting chance. No wonder you aren't surviving.

Also, that's why you have escape spells/methods and don't waste every point of magic on summoning. If you're a wizard this is especially true.

Even without splint mail (sometimes I have no armor except the starting robe) I still get killed a lot. Summoners don't HAVE escape spells that early, you get summon mammals and stick to snake. Of course I try to run, but all it takes is one enemy who's dead set on pursuing you and a few bad summons/placements/lack of movement/double speed enemies to kill you. Summoners just seem fragile. Wizards aren't too much better. Unless there's something obvious I'm missing, it seems like it's damn near impossible to get them very far without a lot of luck.

I'm having trouble with early casters too, actually. I think when they nerfed AC and EV, they nerfed EV a little bit too hard.

Wizards aren't as bad as summoners in this regard - I tried again and this time always saved enough mana for a few blinks and it helps, presuming the problem is the enemy tunneling you rather than the enemy just being way too strong. It does seem like you don't have very many tools though, which is frustrating since that's supposed to be the caster's strength, not his weakness.

Its not a GREAT reason to worship him, but Fedhas's sunlight kills electric eels in 2 shots.

Ooook, so I decided to worship Nemelex Xobeh and got turned into a bat. While the speed is nice, the lack of attack or spellcasting sucks. How do I un-bat myself?

Edit: nevermind, figured it out. Used my vampire ability to return to hominid form.
