"Run from things you can't beat and are slower than you" is still advice pretty much any character needs to follow. You always need to keep your escape options handy, and plan things out a bit. This is why we don't take shafts downward!

Dispel Undead.
derp

Necromancy in general is pretty much a "derp". You get spells to raise the dead, spells to make things dead (direct damage), a spell to steal HP, a spell to heal HP (regeneration), spells to summon things, a spell to turn into a freaking lich (with lots of benefits), an invincibility spell (I'm not kidding), and I forget what other ridiculous stuff.

Troll Wizard Anything of Nemelex.
FTFY. Nemlex is the most bizzare god ever. At first, he's kinda useless, because you keep sacrificing the multitudes of weapons you get, then you realize 'Wait. Battle sucks. Here, have my rations instead." and you are getting levelup cards suddenly.
Specifically though, Troll Wizards of Nemelex have Magikarp power, since they can Shuffle that delightfully massive Strength stat into their intelligence, making, potentially, the most powerful caster type in the game.

Haha, yeah. Their magical aptitudes still suck, though, so you'd have to farm a lot for it. Earth Magic is their best at -1, but Spellcasting (and many others) are at -4, meaning it costs twice as much experience (as 0 aptitude) to raise them.

Either the game was made way easier, or Felid Berserkers are awesome.

Seriously, second game in months and I'm almost as far as I've ever been :O

What version are you playing? Felid Berserkers used to be even better but they got hit with an aptitude nerf. They're still good, just not as good.

I've gotten my furthest ever a felid berserker, getting my first rune, entering the vaults for the first time, killing a ton of enemies and uniques for the first time, so yes they are awesome. Though have been nerfed several times.

Pretty sure that's after. Did you grab that version anytime within the past few months? Felids were nerfed ages ago.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

You know they've got precompiled binaries up on their site, right?

I played Crawl the first time a couple of years ago (there were still Ogre mages and Gnomes), then I left it but rediscovered Stone Soup last Summer (no such thing as Felids then, iirc) and I just checked out the source last weekend and started playing again.

I love vampires. At first I just enjoyed their relaxed hunger clock, but then I started liking other things as well. Vampire wizard is one of my favorite characters, and mephitic cloud owns the early game. Kobolds are another favorite of mine, because of their easy eating and good aptitudes for a fighter/spellcaster hybrid. I dislike playing with characters that don't have spellcasting skill initially, because I think it's even harder to train from scratch (for most melee combat races, especially) than fighting, but I find it important to have some magical backup like summon imp for dealing with mummy death curses and distracting monsters. I've played Hill Orc Crusader a lot and went for Cheibriados (one of my favorite gods because he's so... relaxed ^^) but somehow I always bump into Sigmund or an ogre or something like that before I find an altar...

(EDIT: Please suggest fun race&class&god combinations! I find plain melee guys a bit boring, but something that can survive beyond the very beginning is appropriate)

I like kobold berserkers and spriggan magic users a lot, they're both very good in the early game and can get really powerful.

I've got a KoBe game going at the moment and things are going pretty well, I've just wondering whether ditching Trog to get some spells (for stuff like blink and repel/deflect missiles and a few ranged things) is worth it. So far I've had no real problems, but I don't know how useful brothers in arms is on later levels and the versatility of a few spells would be nice. Also, when deserting gods, does the amount of punishment you get increase/change with piety? I've never done it before.

Your piety doesn't matter. However, Trog wrath is pretty bad.

Quote
trog wrath[1/4]: ABANDONMENT: 50 penance, immediate retribution.  RETRIBUTION: 50% summoning abjurable, but berserking hostiles from (iron troll, deep troll, rock troll, troll, black bear, grizzly bear, stone giant, hill giant, ogre, two-headed ogre); 33% weakening effect (decay, STR loss, paralysis, slowing); 16% fire miscast.

If you feel like you can escape or kill berserking stone giants or being paralyzed or set on fire at random times, I guess you could go right ahead. I wouldn't do it.
