While reading the commit, out of the berzerk/trog nerfs that were announced after several berzerker managed to win the game during the tourney, it looks like teleporting will become more difficult too in 0.9 :
Quote
Remove the Teleport Self spell
It existed as a spell, ring/evocable property, wand, and scroll. Of
these, the spell is probably the least used and the least interesting,
especially since the ring is fairly common and provides a similar
renewable and cheap source of teleportation.
Just hope you will find a ring or a wand of teleportation somewhere, as teleportation scrolls have an unfortunate habit to be destroyed by fire a few turns before you need them :D

And additionally they increased the difficulty of the ascension after fetching the Orb of Zot for which teleportation and teleportation control were survival items when you were running from stairs to stairs and suddenly piles of demons and pandemonium lords were spawning near you :
Quote
Make the orb interfere with teleportation and teleport control when ascending
It has a 50% chance of increasing the delay before a teleport kicks in,
and a 50% chance of adding extra fuzz to a controlled teleport.

Personnally, i wish they made the Orb escape actually fun instead of just going to make it more difficult, with the Orb preventing you completely to teleport or blink but allowing you to blast those pesky demons by increasing a lot either your combat damage or a lot spell damage depending on what class your character is during your escape.

It would feel much more rewarding like this in my opinion

They are just getting rid of teleport self, the spell, not the ring or wand. So berserkers get no change at all from that.

Ok, what does an orange crystal statue do, and why does my auto explore fear it?

Basically, 2/3 chance of a divination miscast, which can instantly kill you if you have less then 8 int.

And as I have a puny int score of 4, I am going to avoid that thing, thank you!

It is demon. Fear it with your life.

I wish it were undead. I have a sword for that... Trog has been giving me all these great long swords as gifts, and that is going down well, as I have been using long swords since I found one on the second level. Waiting for one to take out demons though.

hahahahaha you want to fight an orange crystal statue in melee. Hahahahahahaha.

Seriously though, if autoexplore puts an exception around a stationary target, that usually means it's something you don't want to get close to. If you have a disintegration wand, use it on the statue, and if not, well, wait until you do.

Ah well, just died to a  massive army of jellies around one of those alters to the slime god. Freaking death slimes. Got about 31,000 points.

EDIT: Does Trog not like you using magical devices like wands and rods?

No, you should be clear with wands, rods, and scrolls. It's spells he is raeg over.

I didn't realise slimes could hit that hard when they merge... Got hit for 71 damage by an enormous slime, definitely would have run if I knew that could happen.

Never underestimate slime creatures. I usually just run the hell away from them on melee characters when they're in groups of 3 or more unless I'm already at the "sparring with demons" stage. Unless they're no threat (in which case you can just spank and forget), the best thing to do is to lure them into a corner or nook so that they can't run away. They hit hard and they can get away from you in no time.

There's one thing that really, consistently bugs me about SS: just a little thing, but I'd like to see if I'm alone in my thinking.

It's the D:1 start vaults. Some of them are terribly designed - most notably, the one that's basically a straight corridor with half the spaces filled with nigh-random walls and the gigantic spiral one that eats up half the level and takes 300 turns to autoexplore out of. Don't get me wrong, they look good, I just don't understand the logic of putting them right at the start. I don't play Crawl for immersion or wonderment or whatever. I play it because it's immediate. And there's no better way of completely deflating any momentum I had when starting the game than by forcing me to repeatedly blunder into the same predictable dead ends so I don't miss an item or somesuch.

The solution? Move them elsewhere. Put portals at the end of them or make them like that rakshasa vault and make them themed, or just something - anywhere other than the first few levels and they'll have the potential to contain something interesting. Right now they're a complete waste of time.

Oh I don't know, I sort of like them. The small house one especially!

But, I guess they would mean a little more if they were more hidden away, as a special treat, rather then being just there.
