I love Lee's Rapid Deconstruction so much. Though I find that I'm often torn between ways to kill enemies as an Earth Elementalist. I never really know what I should use, or how I should react in situations. Plus I'm in ponderous gear.. so in wide open dungeon levels I often find myself making last stands against groups of monsters, unable to petrify one to block a corridor.

Any tips from experienced Earth Elementalist players or Cheibriados worshipers?

Chei is a difficult god. I'll say that much. Being able to move quickly in Crawl is very, very, very valuable, so ponderous gear is a huge handicap. I suggest learning some translocations spells if you don't have any, especially Blink. Semicontrolled Blink (and Controlled Blink if you get that good) and controlled teleports are very, very useful to a Chei worshiper.

In 0.8, Stone Arrow isn't bad and LRD is pretty good. Sometimes I like to petrify a monster within a group and use him to blow up the rest, but that can take a few turns and be costly. Try to position monsters well and avoid wide-open spaces.

Oh, and Shatter can be pretty awesome when you get it, although you want to have decent MP.

Yeah, as a Chei Transmuter, you want to learn Spiderform as soon as you can and get it reliable. Chei doesn't mind transmutations that increase speed, so it makes a great escape spell. Also, remember it only effects MOVEMENT speed, so find a chokepoint, drop yourself in it, and don't move in combat.

True, although in current versions, your ponderousness still applies while you're in forms.

So far I had a pretty fun MuWz run. Mephitic Cloud is an amazing spell; when in doubt, spam it. I probably should of graduated out of Magic Dart, but ya'know, its a nice spammable spell that never misfires. Got some pretty lucky lucky staffs of fire one level before a group of Ice Beasts tried to rock me.

Then... well then I met my TrBe. Some running and a few unlucky blinks later, I tied. Oh well. Kiku fails me again!

You should have avoided the ghost from the start, probably. With Kiku, you'll get Dispel Undead anyway!

Got the farthest yet in my SpAs of Fedhas. I have to be honest, Fedhas is a pretty mehworthy god. I got to max piety in him simply because I never found times to put his skills to use.

I delved a few levels into Lair, then backed up to the dungeon (Blink Frogs annoyed the hell out of me.). Took out several ghosts, all of them easily dispatched. Even went into the Labyrinth and killed the Minotaur in one swipe. Nothing was all to challenging yet.

Then I met an Orc Warrior. You know, those guys you slay hordes of without special attention?

He killed me the same turn I moved into melee range of him.

FUUUU.png

Oh, and I have to say that Berserk is a pretty badass skill on Spriggans. Yeah, you don't have food laying all over the place, but to be honest, I was on Engorged nearly the entire game. There is plenty of veggies laying about. The speed/damage my spriggan had was wtflul.

I had a Spriggan Berserker once.
It was all good.
Suddenly I get attacked by several enemies at once.
No problem, I think.
I go berserk and it wears off in a few turns.
Who kills me?
A fucking goblin with a club.

Ok, I need someone to help me make sense of how I just died in Slime:6. I had an HEIE, xlvl 27, ice storm, tornado, haste, 4 runes, nothing out of the ordinary. So there I am, Tornadoing slimes around, running from the Royal Jelly, getting some minor mutations through my amulet, a bit of a glow, because I'm being forced to haste+tornado at the same time, but not even yellow yet. Oh, it's some 0.9 trunk, just for the record.

AND THEN... something, somehow, drains me of THIRTY EIGHT intellect. I am currently at -6, unable to cast, read scrolls... nothing. I rush to slap on a +5 int ring, but I am still at 0, no stat restoration items of any kind (which is, in fact, my own fault, but come on!), however I manage to get up the stairs. Where I meet a single death slime. Which plinks me to death in about 20 turns, because my wand of teleportation runs out and suddenly my HeIe has forgotten how to read scrolls. And naturally the three teleports I do get off land me within a 3-tile radius of the ooze.

Here's the stupid morgue, but it doesn't show anything, what with my spending the last 30 turns getting paper-cut to death.

But the most important thing is... I read the knowledgebots entry on stat drain, and the largest single-source drain should be 7. I had 38 int. So what the hell happened to my poor elementalist?!

I noticed that the tornado spell you say you were casting was on "terrible", so those intelligence loss must be due to miscast (i think the higher the spell level, the more horrible the miscast effect can be, and Tornado is at the highest spell level, 9)

But still, 38 intelligence loss sounds just like an automatic game over, as you can't possibly recover from this.

If it's 38 in a single turn and not multiple miscast effect one after the other, you should really report this here in the hope this get fixed :

If you read the article on player ghosts, you'll see how NASTY they can be, or how tame. Even a basic fighter who just learned Magic Dart is nasty, while a summoner who just learned Call Imp will leave a ghost that has Demonic Horde. It is truly nasty.

Well, that's the thing - I'm not sure :( I was kind of zoned out. I just mashed tornado when I saw more than one enemy. And I only noticed it because I couldn't cast it anymore, and there didn't seem to be a reasonable...well, reason x]

I guess it could have been a spiral of miscasts - each one draining more and more int.

I just hate it when I lose a good character... and this one was as good as they get, dammit! I just lose all desire to play for a while. Though that could be good right now, what with my having 4 exams in 7 days to slog through :D

edit : basically what I'm trying to say is I just wanted to whine a bit x] And if anyone knew an exact bug or sth, even better. But mostly just the whining.

Yay, got my first rune! (Yes, I suck enough that that's a large accomplishment.)

I was a spriggan enchanter of Nemelex, and I managed to clear the snake pit by stabbing through it and then drawing many times from decks of summoning in the rune vault.

Of course, I was then one-hit killed in the shoals by a unique that woke up and hit me about four times with chain lightning before I could move again. Stay classy, Crawl.

On the plus side, they can't climb stairs.  They're usually fairly escapable (especially now they've reduced the range of Sticky Flame to 1, that used to be one of my biggest sources of death).

It's odd, because I'd expect that many level 8 miscasts to just kill you outright.  Is there something about Tornado or Air spells that biases the miscasts towards int loss...?
