I've seen that sort of thing happen around altar vaults in the past. Not sure if it's down to a bug or not.

Actually, I zapped a wand near it and it turned out to be a wand of digging.

Well at least that could have been prevented....
My encounter with the Giant eyeball and acid blob gave me exactly 1 turn to react before getting paralyzed and killed.

Chain paralysis sucks.  :( You could've switched to your amulet of stasis or use one of your emergency scrolls.

I got a pretty good DDNe of Makhleb going. Not sure which spells to memorize next, though. The char dump is here, and if anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears. Maybe train poison magic, since I got the books for it.

I wouldnt go for poison, as your necromancy is ineffective against demons, as is poison magic, also dispel undead does not work on demons(most enemies immune to necromancy also resist poison). This means that getting banished (probably won't happen for a while, but still) means almost certain death. I would try to go for non elemental magic (earth conjurations or mystic blast) if you can get your hands on it. Otherwise fire or ice magic might help.

Good melee also helps, and is quite viable on a DD, especially since you can get the Pain brand if you're lucky, and Fighting skill will improve max HP.

Yeah, my modus operandi right now is hacking at things with my short sword of venom and summoning demons when that isn't enough, and only really relying on magic to heal with vampiric draining. Between the damage shaving and the good defensive skill aptitudes, I can take quite a beating, and the venom brand is really useful in early game. And Makhleb's summons kick ass, of course. I'm going to need a better weapon soon, but fighting things toe-to-toe still feels like a viable general strategy.

I could grab stoneskin and start training earth magic for when I find some more spells. Throw frost too.

If your going toe to toe 90% of the time, stoneskin can only help, especially since you seem to wish to branch into earth magic.

What's the best god for a melee character in your opinion? I'm pretty sure it's Nemelex.

It depends on your build and which version you're playing. In .7 playing a hybrid caster Okawaru can be incredible, and TSO can also be useful. If you're playing a straight melee tank with heavy armor and no spell casting, Makhleb, Nemelex or Trog are all decent.

Edit: Nevermind. I was stupid and drank from a fountain of sparkling water without any safeguards against negative effects, and I ended up badly poisoned and suffering from rot. The poison killed me. Stupid, stupid, stupid! (I read a scroll of teleport {Not knowing what it was}, and teleported into a vault filled with random wall and floor tiles and an altar to Xom and a bunch of traps and sparkling fountains.)
