Most of my stealth skill increase has occured when moving.
So apparently moving (not attacking) should train Stealth.

I don't think a monster should be nearby, as i clearly remember my stealth skill increasing when auto-exploring while there was no monster on the screen.

I think it's kindof like armour, in that for training purposes, it's the "standing around" skill.

I just died to... a floating eyeball.

How?  Chain paralysis next to a fucking wall.  The damage seemed to go into overdrive for some reason.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Playing a spell-casting Troll without grinding is fun.

So what's the best way to train stealth?

Wait near sleeping (or pacified) monsters while you have xp in your xp pool.

Okay. For the longest time, I avoided this like the plague. Why? Because I hated the original Crawl for being too hard, and I thought this was just a 'mod'. I also hate mods.

But, I finally got a craving for a new roguelike, and seeing the size of this thread convinced me. After many, many deaths, I've finally breached level ten as an orc priest. Causing an orc holy way by entering the orc mines is getting pretty epic.

Question, though: How do you access the death files you guys are posting? I couldn't find them in any folders.

Ustxu Iceraped the Frigid Crystal of Slaughter was a glacier titan. It was the only one of its kind. A gigantic feathered carp composed of crystal glass. It has five mouths full of treacherous teeth, enormous clear wings, and ferocious blue eyes. Beware its icy breath! Ustxu was associated with oceans, glaciers, boats, and murder.

I found it. Username > AppData > Roaming > crawl > morgue

Anyway, here's my best character. Casualty of an orc holy war. If you see any glaring stupidities, lemme know.

You should generally skip Orc until you've done Lair and maybe Hive unless you want to get smited a lot. You've probably realised this already.

Two glaring stupidities, though one's pretty obvious. Being anywhere near Roka at clvl 10 was a pants-on-head moment. Roka's vicious and will kill you -- he had over twice your HP and could drop you in three rounds in melee. I suppose if you got one-two turn killed, it's forgivable, but if you had any option at all to get out of dodge when Roka showed up, you should have taken it.

Spoiler: Roka's Stats (click to show/hide)

Only other thing I immediately noticed was the two-weapons thing. Pick a weapon type at the start and stick with it. Training multiple weapon skills does absolutely nothing for you, barring unarmed -- and even with unarmed, any character that doesn't have some additional mutations (Hooves, horns, etc) probably shouldn't be messing with it.

Ninja'd: And yeah, Lair -> Orc.

Well! Thanks. Good to know now. I got a bit over-confident, what with half the orcs I ran across joining my holy crusade. I figured that would have saved me.

You should also generally wait to do the Orc Mines until after you've maxed your Beogh piety at the very least (which will conveniently probably be around the time you finish Lair). I think your character level also plays a factor in how many Orcs join you, though, so waiting until longer might be wise. On the other hand, you really want to be wearing Orcish gear, and it's tough to find Orcish gear outside of Orc.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

Oh god, I got to try an Orc Priest then. Just imagine lugging around Roka and a couple of sorcerers and high priests :D

Even better if I cross-train into spellcasting to the point where I can cast Haste, and then haste those bad boys.
