If the question is still relevant...

I'm debating on whether to go with the +1 +1orcish war axe of venom, or the +2 +0 demon trident of chaos.

"You hit the Iron Troll! The Iron Troll goes berserk! You hit the Iron Troll! The Iron Troll is healed!"1

Chaos weapons are the kiss of death. The only reason you should even remotely consider using it is to keep Xom happy. I still wouldn't suggest it. The trident will eventually cause your death if something else doesn't get to you first. You don't want to be sitting next to a berserk Lernaean Hydra.

1Message accuracy not guaranteed.

Well the trident didn't end up doing me in, the centaurs did. I managed to hack through all of them only to slowly succumb to poison.  I'm not sure why I attacked them, especially since I had only barely escaped some nasty slimes a few minutes before.

I'm in bit of a loss as to what god I should pick for an ogre transmuter. I'm not THAT good at spells, so I'd rather not trust the regular casting gods. Kiku might be an okay choice for the corpse delivery service (saprovore food) and the resists. Nemelex is always great. Other than that, I don't really have any ideas.

Nemelex would give you firepower and survivability, but largely at the cost of potential food -- you need to sac corpses to tilt the deck odds toward summoning. Also utility spells, and ogres get to sac most armor to Nemmy (but defense decks are mostly worthless :-\).

Kiku would solve any future food problem. If you could pick up a corpse-eating summon spell (Simulacrum, animate dead, etc.), firepower and survivability again. The torment/corpse thing probably wouldn't be as useful to you as it would be to mummy/ghoul/vampire. Lichform, maybe, but ogre's -3 to all non-spellcasting magic skills...

All that mumbled, Nemelex is hax. Go with Nemelex unless you plan on hitting places without edible people to carve up and omnomnom on.

Yeah, I'm kind of worried about potential food. Decks of summoning are really the most useful aspect of Nemelex, and between the fast metabolism and the constant casting, I'm eating a lot of corpses. Also, fulsome distillation and evaporate are really the basic tools of any low-to-mid level transmuter, and they require more corpses still. That'll be less of a problem once I get to the high-power magic, but I'll have to survive until then.

... help :(

So I've run into an... interesting issue, with my crawl trunks for two or three revisions now. For reasons unknown, even though the options files are the exact same, as far as I can tell, the newest trunk build has the following major problems :

1. The font is tinier, uglier and more cramped.
2. The mouse is off-center, i.e. I'll be pointing at a tile, and the tile underneath it will be the actual target.

Here are the screenshots to show what I mean :

Normal version :

Bugged version :

I'm sorry if it's something (as I assume it is) mind-numbingly stupid. I just can't play like this, and my limited intelligence crawl options knowledge isn't really helping here.

Thanks in advance :)

Woah... Okawaru's... really outdone himself this time...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That's a +11, +9 swort sword.  It hits almost as hard as a greatsword, for crying out loud.  The only problem is that it blocks teleports... and I'll probably have enough skills and money to get Controlled Blink after Orc.  Hmm.

EDIT: YES YES YES

That was officially the best rune I have ever got.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The first door I opened was the rune room.  Nothing noticed me, so I just turned invisible and killed everything there.  I now have the rune.  Hmm, should I stick around and complete the branch or just get out...?

Nemelex is always the best choice.  :) Okawaru and Kiku are great choices as well. If you worship Kiku, try getting a demon whip of pain with a shield or a great mace of pain. The bigger clubs are too slow to use the pain brand effectively.

Hmm, should I stick around and complete the branch or just get out...?

The shoals are a breeze if you're levitating and invisible. I don't think there's anything in the shoals that can see through invisibility.

Ended up going with Kiku. As predicted, I didn't really have many corpses to spare, so I wouldn't really have gotten that much juice out of Nemelex. And I died already. I think I want to try this again, though. Having a shitton of hitpoints and carrying capacity is nice for a change.

I went around and cleared most of the shoals, but on finding a room with a kraken, a unique and a bunch of other stuff... I decided to run away.  Better safe than sorry... might go back and do it sometime.  Come to think of it, there's also the demons and the bottom of the Lair to do sometime.

Anyway, I did snake, and got the rune... very, very slowly.  I just pulled a few monsters from the rune vault at a time, and fought them one on one (putting everything to sleep except Greaters, who I just hasted against and fought normally).

I've cleared D:19 so I guess it's time for Vaults.  I don't think I've ever survived vaults before, so let's hope...

Oh wow.  One shot kill on a sleeping Mara.  Ahahahahaha.

Character sheet time:

I can't quite believe I'm up to level 21.  Ah well, still awesome.

I stopped doing Vaults, incidentally, since I ran into a Lich and have no idea how to deal with them.  I'll work it out later.

My latest OgTr... made some bad decisions. The hydra I was fighting ran away, and instead of  attacking from range or just letting it go, I blindly chased after it. And then I'm not sure what happened, but now I'm trying and failing to run away from the hydra, with five hit points left. I'm not really sure what desperate last-ditch strategy I should try. Read a scroll of teleportation and hope that the hydra misses all its attacks next turn? Try to enslave the hydra? Confuse the hydra? Read an unidentified scroll, hoping for fear?

Char dump.

I'm sad because I found an amulet of Gourmand in this game and it was really helpful. :(

No way a Hydra's missing all its attacks at 13 EV.

I'd evaporate one of those potions of degeneration. That should slow it and if you're lucky give you a free move before it can react. Hydras have pretty high HD so it'd generally resist your fear, confusion, and enslavement attempts. Spider Form might give you enough speed to get another move before it can react. You could keep running and hope the random energy system gives you a free square on the Hydra you can work with.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

I would say drink a health potion, I think you will have about 50% chance of gaining health instead of dying. Wand of enslavement probably has about 30% chance of succes.

A potion of health would restore about 10 health. The Hydra would probably do that much damage per head. Drinking a health potion here is suicide.

Well... this is great and all, but I don't really know how to proceed.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I probably have the resistances... but the thing is, how am I gonna kill anything in the Realm of Zot?  Everything down there can see invisible, and I'll be surprised if any of my enchantments actually work.  I guess I could try swapping spells, but I'm not entirely sure what could help me.

Yeah, healing potions are right out. I tried drinking my last potion of heal wounds on the turn before this one, and that didn't help much. I'll try spider form, I guess.

Nope. Dead. :(
