It's been toned down, too. A few versions ago, it wasn't limited to one critter; you'd have swarms of demons popping up every time you ran into something dangerous. Was vaguely ridiculous, actually.

I'm guessing it checks monster hit dice and not anything else, since I didn't get any help fighting a pack(!) of wights and died (embarassing, yes, but two of them had greataxes).

I've seen wights generated in groups too, but didn't have any problems with them.

Depends.  A melee character with no rN is liable to get drained to oblivion.

And "simple" resistance is not reliable enough to be sure to avoid a drain, my last character and his single negative resistance ring had lost enough levels in several draining monster encounter to have understood that.
As if i trust the wiki, each negative resistance level protect you "only" 33% of time against the drain.
So only 1 level of negative resistance is not enough to avoid drain in zones that have lot of draining monsters.

If you can have several negative resistance items, wear them before facing those kind of annoying monsters. It can take sometime a very lot of time to go back to the XP level you had.
Only 3 level of negative protection protect you reliably (100% of the time) from that very annoying thing.

On the plus side, rN+++ gives you 100% resistance to negative energy, unlike the 90% provided by rF+++ or rC+++.

I can't get anywhere...
Keep getting killed on the fourth floor down after starting. It's usually an OHKO by ogres.

I always kill everything on the preceding floors too, so grinding isn't the problem.

Ogres are pretty tough, especially for lower health melee characters. I find that summoners do great against them- they aren't accurate or fast enough to take out spammels effectively. If you can confuse them it help, but you're still at some risk fighting them up close. But yeah, don't be afraid to run away, it's one of the most valuable skills in this game.

Grr... I'm getting sick an tired of dying to out of depth monsters showing up in droves. I don't mind the occasional one or two, but when I get a fucking unique, a death yak, an Elephant, and a half dozen other monsters all at the same time on D10 that's more than a little bit of overkill. Especially when I'm a NaWz of Chei.

Is there a race/class combination that will have tools to deal with OOD monsters, crowds, the occassional player ghost, and doesn't have a 90% chance of dying 10 feet from the door like most things do?

Mephitic Cloud or Sticky Flame also destroys ogres.  As does Ensorcelled Hibernation.  Or Confuse.  Or poison kiting.  Really, you're fine as long as you're not a melee character.

virtually nothing is a problem when not playing a melee character.....

my demigod reaver took less damage from hydra'swhile wearing a +3 ring mail then while wearing the +5 armour of the dragon king.......

also he had lvl 16 long blades and a +4 katana and still did more damage each turn standing next to a monster casting mystic blast at lvl 12.........

Spriggan enchanters can devastate anything not cold resistant with their ensorcelled hibernation, and spriggan assassins can devastate anything not poison resistant with their needles. Spriggans in general are pretty badass. Sure, you don't have much health, but you can run away from most things in the game. Watch out for the orc priests, though. The smites HURT. Oh, and player ghosts are harmed by neither cold nor poison, so you'll have to think of something else for them. Maybe sticky flame or something.

Ghosts are not solid enough to hold sticky flame. I think this extends to player ghosts as well, but I'm not 100% sure.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.
