Anyone has experience with player version of the draining effects ?
Neither wiki or bot are giving any formula on the exact hit dice/abilities reduction on a monster.

I know from 1st hand experience that the monster version is plain awesome at crippling my characters :D (going through most of Elven Halls floors while wearing a ring of life protection got my XP (if i trust the 0.52 tables) from 494000 points down to  291500  (level 23 down to level 20), that's 200000 XP drained despite a protection against it.)
but the player version is a big unknown.

Supposed to be pretty bad damagewise and draining your foes levels just reduces the exp you get from them I think. I wouldn't bother since there's better Necromancy and Conjurer based damage.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

This game is great. Much more forgiving than Nethack.

Cool. The DoomRL creator made me an admin at the wiki.

Bolt of Draining is almost silent and lowers a monster's HD (by 1, I think). It doesn't work on demons or the undead. Level drain is pretty useful against uniques, but I prefer the weapon brand over the wand or spell. It doesn't reduce the amount of XP you get by much.

There are new gods in Trunk? My DSWn just found an altar to someone called "Ashenzari". Apparently He was "cursed centuries ago" and His altar is made of crystal and "suspended in mid-explosion". That sounds pretty badass. Too bad it's in the middle of a lava pool. :|

That could sound good if the effect is cumulative and multiple draining hit will lower HD each time, as HD affects a monster magic resistance. Though with "only" 1 HD down by hit, it is then much better as a hand to hand combat weapon brand indeed.

But if the HD reduction has a limit, the usefulness becomes much lower.

Interesting, looking around, i found

Scrying into the more distant future, there will be a god centered around a divination theme. In a curious deviation from the normal design process, the name is already fixed: Ashenzari, and this god’s powers allow us to fix the bad effects incriminated above. Also, there may come additional consumables to provide ways to Detect Something. The most natural candidates are scrolls and miscellaneous items. However, play-testing with the Divinations school removed, it was quite obvious that the need for such items is not as pressing as one may have thought.

Explore to get piety, faster piety gain if your items are cursed, high piety gives you sInv and I think magic mapping as an ability.

It's Trunk, wait for the features to finish before complaining about them.

Well, the kind people at the IRC channel warned me that it is currently impossible to gain piety for Ash. Which might be a bit of a problem. I think I'll wait a while before converting to him.

Which means that I don't know what god this character should use. I don't even have the vaguest idea of what playstyle to use. This wanderer started with mostly spell skills and a book of necromancy, but only 11 int. And I just found a +5 ring of strength, so my stats would really be more suited to a fighter-type. Yet another caster-fighter? Sif, Nemelex, Okawaru, someone else entirely? So many options.

Any good advice for a basic fighter?
They are just horribly hard to play :/

Go Mekky or Chei and wreck everything? Or Okky or TSO-bro and do pretty good too? Pray for a GDA and decent shield? Throw everything at anything. Never fight groups, ever ever, unlike the caster or hybrid's single ever. Die when you hit a teleport trap and land on the wrong side of deep water/lava without levitation or teleportation consumables/evokables. Read the wiki guides.

The main game changer for basic fighters characters is the equipment you will find, not good enough and your character will die +/- soon, good items (nice branded weapons, good wands) and you can hope to deal with the stronger monsters/uniques from early part of the dungeon.
After that you'll need to gain more level quick as it will be very often the difference between a fight you can win and one where you'll die.

Not supposed to be the best choice for fighters, but considering that basic fighters are going to lose lots of health due to them going to close battle monsters, maybe you could try Elyvilon like my current Human Fighter does, not for healing monsters and hoping luck is on your side (and it will never be) for them to go neutral, but for the self healing ability.

This ability alone has saved my human fighter from death countless times.

...

3 potions of experience stacked in the swamp.

Is it generally better to use em up now or wait a bit till the gaps are bigger?  I'm level 8 now.

Well, drank em to give myself a big advantage for the early game (hard for a transmuter).  Level 10 by D:10 is pretty ridiculous.

I'd personally use 'em now, in a probably vague hope of staving off eventual death. If you think that you'll survive to use 'em later, though, it might be worth it to stash 'em somewhere. Depends on what you've got that can be victory danced, I'd think. Wait, wait, was thinking cards of experience, not potions. Eh. First bit still stands.

They do ignore required XP (i.e. go straight to your next level), so you would be getting more out of 'em if you waited, quite possibly exponentially so. But you'd have to be alive then. No guarantees, there.

Yeah, exactly.  I drank them since it was a pretty tough sewer.

Everything since then has been pretty easy :P.

EDIT: Sludge Elf Transmuters of Cheibrados own.  Seriously.  I've been using Blade Hands as a defensive spell on the grounds that it leaves everything dead or fleeing within a few turns.

I don't even play Crawl anymore. Reading the devlog is more fun. What other game would have a commit actually titled "Slight Anti-Rickrolling"?
