So I got bored and rolled up a new character Merfolk Crusader, because they're supposed to be easier to play and my High Elf Crusaders kept dying. Things were going pretty well for me, fighting unarmed in an attempt to obtain the unarmed combat skill, when I ran into Jessica... surrounded by 3 hobgoblins. I guess they were worshipping her or something. Anyway, they all come after me, and I try to block them off in a hallway. Works fairly well until Jessica blinks away to an open room. I find another hallway, hoping to kill the goblins first, when 4 jacklals come running down the other side of it. I'm trapped, have only 7 HP, and have no way out...

So I start doing what any (in)sane person would do; read random unidentified scrolls. First one; scroll of noise. That did not help. Down to 4 HP. Another one; scroll of detect curse. Down to 1 HP. Another one; Scroll of blink.

Awesome.

Blink away and rush to the stairs. Lived to fight another day, not that tomorrow looks very promising... but that was still a rather memorable moment.

EDIT: Died anyway. Oh well. Maybe it's crusaders that are weak, not the race I'm playing them as...

Merfolk crusaders are more mid-late powerhouses than earlygame stompers. Try Kobold crusaders, since they can pretty much berserk every fight starting from level 3. Berserk -> eat stuff -> berserk -> eat stuff -> cast high hunger spells for shits and giggles because you never worry about food.

I had some decent runs with human crusaders. I saved spell slots to get berserk and regen. From there I built them up as necro/enchanters

Huh. I never played any kobolds before, but I just tried a few. 5 to be exact. All died before even reaching level 3... so I can't really attest to how they are with berzerker rage, but they seem really fragile.

If you play as a merfolk anything, always use polearms. Merfolk have like +4 in polearms aptitude, it's insane.

Also, give ogres a shot. People tell me that they're terrible, but I play them almost exclusively, and they don't seem that horrible.

But that might be because I play them almost exclusively.

Ogres are pretty bad in comparison to other races, but that's only because they simply can't specialize at ANYTHING. Every other race specializes better than them. So you have to be a hybrid, and other races are better at them at being hybrids, too. Draconians and High Elves, specifically, but Kobolds are also pretty good hybrids. And hybrids suck in general (SpEn besides, but that's not really a hybrid. I'm talking spellcasting fighter, not a spellcasting stabber). And Ogre magic apititudes suck, as well, so they can only really learn spellcasting. Which is fine, except that means they suck at actually casting any spell higher than level 4.

But if you can somehow get beyond all that, they actually have a relatively easy early game, and Crawl has about 10 different ways to carry their mid-game, so they're definitely doable. They're just worse than pretty much every other race.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

Huh. I can only guess it's been discussed somewhere else in the thread, but what's the 'worst' race? Ogres are pretty bad, but I'd still say they're better than mummies for most combos... though eyeballing the race stats, it looks like Ogres might even have a worse composite aptitude than mummies, as amazing as that is. Better stats, but that's still pretty harsh. Ogres are also... kinda' boring. Dez not very special compared to, uh, everything else (Barring humans, I guess, but 'not special' is th'humies shtick.).

I can't seem to find any stats on CAO about wins-by-race, which would help t'clarify things a little. I'd probably rank ogres and mummies as the bottom of the barrel, with probably demigods coming shortly after. Their stats are incredible, but no-god + crap aptitudes is a bit of kick to the jaw. After that, though, I'unno. The rest of them are pretty solid.

Ask on ##crawl, on freenode! It's full of dudes who actually know what they're talking about. I asked something similar earlier, I think someone mentioned that draconians were pretty bad.

The worst species are:

- Ogre
- Mummy
- Demigod

Ogres have a hard time for the entire game. They have terrible EV (due to being large), so almost every attack connects. They have terrible AC, even if you managed to find a dragon armor. And due to their limited armor slots they have very few resistances. There are some good things about ogres. They can wield the most powerful weapon in the game (giant spiked club), they have the most HP in the game, and their huge strength stat allows them to carry dozens of javelins and large rocks. Basically, they're glass cannons.

Mummies can't berserk, drink potions, or cast several emergency necromancy spells. They have few "panic buttons" to rely on, unlike most other races. They have a lot of advantages though. No need for food, rN+++, torment resistance, poison resistance and cold resistance. Demigods aren't that hard, but a lot of people can't win without a god. They level up slowly and have slightly worse than average aptitudes for everything.

Wins sorted by race, version 0.7 only:

<freehugs> !lg * won s=race cv=0.7
<Sequell> 389 games for * (won cv=0.7): 71x Spriggan, 48x Merfolk, 37x Deep Dwarf, 32x Halfling, 31x Demonspawn, 26x High Elf, 25x Sludge Elf, 20x Ghoul, 18x Deep Elf, 12x Naga, 10x Mountain Dwarf, 10x Kobold, 7x Kenku, 7x Ogre, 6x Demigod, 6x Troll, 4x Hill Orc, 4x Human, 4x Minotaur, 4x Vampire, 2x Mummy, 2x Centaur, 1x Black Draconian, 1x Mottled Draconian, 1x Purple Draconian

Note: this doesn't indicate suckiness of races. I think a lot of people like to play ogres, so there are more wins for them.

I'm surprised to discover that I'm one of only 4 people to have won with a minotaur in 0.7!

<freehugs> !lg * won race=minotaur cv=0.7 s=name
<Sequell> 4 games for * (won race=minotaur cv=0.7): 1x elliptic, 1x jokeserver, 1x FreeHugs, 1x frankhovis

Compare with the 0.5 days, when heavy armour ruled the school:
<freehugs> !lg * won s=race cv=0.5
<Sequell> 838 games for * (won cv=0.5): 124x Mountain Dwarf, 75x Deep Dwarf, 70x Demonspawn, 57x Merfolk, 57x Minotaur, 47x Hill Orc, 44x Spriggan, 32x Troll, 29x Deep Elf, 27x Kobold, 25x Sludge Elf, 25x High Elf, 23x Mummy, 23x Human, 22x Ogre, 21x Demigod, 21x Halfling, 20x Kenku, 20x Centaur, 19x Ghoul, 19x Naga, 14x Vampire, 4x Purple Draconian, 4x Black Draconian, 4x Green Draconian, 3x Red
<Sequell> Draconian, 3x Pale Draconian, 2x Yellow Draconian, 2x White Draconian, 1x Mottled Draconian, 1x Grey Draconian

And 0.6 for completeness:
<freehugs> !lg * won s=race cv=0.6
<Sequell> 315 games for * (won cv=0.6): 41x Spriggan, 31x Merfolk, 27x Halfling, 21x High Elf, 19x Deep Elf, 19x Demonspawn, 17x Naga, 17x Demigod, 13x Sludge Elf, 11x Mountain Dwarf, 11x Kenku, 10x Minotaur, 10x Human, 9x Vampire, 9x Hill Orc, 9x Mummy, 9x Kobold, 8x Deep Dwarf, 6x Centaur, 3x Ghoul, 3x Green Draconian, 2x Pale Draconian, 2x Ogre, 2x Purple Draconian, 2x Troll, 1x Black Draconian, 1x
<Sequell> White Draconian, 1x Grey Draconian, 1x Red Draconian

Looking on cao, 0.5 was released and playable on the cao server on the 13 june 2009, while 0.6 was released on cao on 26 march 2010 and 0.7 on the 24 july 2010

So basically the 838 wins happened during a period of +/- 10 months (- 1 month in which the scoring system was down apparently), while the 315 wins occured during a period of 4 months

Though there is no stats on the amount of games played by version.

Mummy may be classified as one of the worst race, but they are one of the most fun to play to me.

They have a really difficult beginning as they are good in nearly nothing and have most skills very slow to increase, they usually die a lot before Temple.
But if you can get beyond Temple, the hunger free spell regardless of your current intelligence and spellcasting, plus their godpowers hunger free casting makes them very fun and counter balance the slow learning problem.

One of the few characters in which resting to heal does not give hunger problems too, fortunately, as potions are a no go for them anyways.

Now if only they were better at learning skills, but in the end they're very fun to play.

I shoot an unidentified wand at Sigmund. It turns him invisible. Sigmund lights me on fire while I flail around trying to kill him.
