It's a one shot thing. You have a certain amount of time, maybe enough to clear 2 dungeon levels but probably only enough to clear the level you're on and the next one. I would go in them ASAP, you can always leave and they have crazy loot. I'm talking about all portals here, not just sewers.

Feeling of ineptitude means you wielded a pain brand weapon with no Necromancy skill, so you get no damage bonuses. Pain deals extra damage the more Necromancy skill you have.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

Sewers shouldn't be too hard, just go very slowly and methodically.

It's a little late for that. I don't think I'll be able to enter the sewers again...

Erm... anyway, one more question. Anyone know which directory the save files are located in? Yes, I am trying to savescum. I've gotten the furthest I've ever gone with this Spriggan Arcane Marksman (Level 10) and I just had a really close encounter with death were I barely escaped alive from this unique mummy called Menkaure. I've grown rather attached to her, and would be really sad if she died.

I want to know the same thing.

Um, the saves folder? I just gave a shot of copying the <name>.cs file, kamikazing the character on a goblin, then moving the backup file back in place. Seemed to work...?

Huh. Doesn't seem to work for non-dev builds or something? Was using whatever windows binary was the first to implement the tourney sprint offline, but the official stone-soup 7.0.0 didn't work that way. Try wizard mode, I guess. Shift+& in the windows build; along with a number of commands, it apparently prompts for death. I normally just point a memory editor at crawl when I feel like cheating, heh. The major stats (and inventory slots :P) are pretty easy to isolate.

Is there a way to savescum without using wizard mode?

Try copying the whole bloody save folder, I'unno. Or just every file that has the name of the character you want to scum -- just tested that, and it works.

Why's it an issue? Wizmode is definitely less effort than constant copying and pasting, and has the same effect. If you're looking to cheat and have the char dump still look legit (which is bad mojo, really...), a memory editor is a much easier way to go.

They're probably running vista, which has decided its going to, at random, decide that certain games saved info goes elsewhere.

Mine is located in C:\Users\(profile name)\AppData\Roaming\crawl

Do not anger the RNG.

If you savescum, he will find a way to screw your character over you wont notice. But he will just doom your character in a way you cannot save it from. and then, when you try to reload, you notice, you're already fooked, and there is nothing you can do, but wait for your inevitable demise.

AND THEN the great RNG will demand future sacrifices from following characters and the great RNG will destroy your lovelife, too.

Are you ready to pay the price? I'm not.

Ah, that was it. No wonder I couldn't find it - I really wish Vista didn't hide data in that folder...

Don't I know it. I've played several roguelikes before, and in general while you can easily die for being stupid, Crawl is the first one I've played were you can die instantly out of no-where that just leaves you gaping "Whuh?". Now, in my experience save scumming is generally pretty bad because you tend to not learn from your mistakes; this is my 47th character with Crawl though, and getting through the first few levels only to die horribly another 40 times only to reach where I currently am does not appeal to me. With luck I will never have to use my scummed backup, but if it saves me grinding the first 10 levels again I'll do it.

The secret is to play troll berserkers, and only troll berserkers.

Nah, spriggan enchanters. Maybe stalkers or venom mages. I actually won with an SpEn, and my TrBes rarely live further than the Lair. Spriggans are just kinda' broke, imo.

Though TrBes or Troll Hunters are both wicked strong -- Hunters even more than berserkers, right at the start. Hella' mid-late game problems though.
