You can't see it, but Sigmund is a few squares to the right out of your line of sight.
This is true in all situations.

Except those cases you just killed him.

Unless your darn fool self polymorphed 'im into a jelly or somethin' first. Then there might be a few extra running around.

...

I'unno, poly-wand + enslavement spell + jelly sigmund = The Unstoppable Sigmund Horde? Just keep one or two jeligmunds around to make more to be poly'd into other critters.

Probably be an interesting way to die after you ran out of th'mana to keep the enslavements going, anyway.

I vote we propose a new feature for when the orb is picked up.

Every time you move, there is a chance, cumulative and resetting back to zero once found, of revealing sigmund at the edge of your vision, once you pick up the orb. He should get a hit die every time you kill him too so he gets stronger the longer you take.

Snorg is much stronger than i thought.
I had a level 9 Troll Berserker that had 121 health, strength 35 and in his hand a giant spiked club (skill 7 with it).
I thought once my troll would be berserked Snorg would go down very quick, after all that Troll had one-shotted an Orc Warrior a minute before without even going berserk.

But i thought "hey, that's Dungeon Crawl, remember how much insanely bad luck you can have with this game at some time", so i used Trog Hand and because i didn't wanted bad luck to strike again, i even summoned a Brother in Arm that ability my character just gained, and then i went berserk.

Snorg arrived in contact with my Ogre and me, went berserk too, he then one-shotted the berserked Ogre that was with me, then 3-shotted my character while we could only took out 3/4 of his health.
Wow, i don't know how much damage a berserked Snorg can do, but seeing my character 121 health going away in 3 hits is not what i expected.

I don't know what kind of health the Ogre Brother in Arms had, but killed in 1 hit, that's really damaging for their reputation :D

Ha! I love first-turn/action deaths in RLs, for all that I hate that they exist.

If it makes it any more amusing, I do believe what happened to you is actually a stated design goal for SS's devs. Congrats! Everything's in working order.

Hey Guys

I recently gave this game another try, but it makes me rage that the game window is closed everytime I die.
I search Init.txt, options_guide.txt and also the wiki, but I couldn't find a way to change this (the game should go back to the starting sreen after death). May be a stupid question, but how can I solve this problem?
Thx in advance.

Ps: I'm using the unzipped ASCII version on win 7.

Edit: From Options_guide.txt:
Quote
restart_after_game = false
EXPERIMENTAL: When a game ends, Crawl will return to the main
menu if restart_after_game is set. This option is
experimental; it may cause problems in games, and is disabled
by default. If you do use it, please mention this when filing
        bug reports.

This is actually what I was looking for, but I can't find that option in the init.txt. I tried to simply add it, but that didn't change anything

Quote from: crawl changes
Place two statues in the orb chamber.

They are not meant to block apportation, just to make it less effortless.
You can't skip the whole chamber outright anymore.  The statues can be
disintegrated, but in the default configuration, orb guardians will block
the line of effect.  LRD will work just fine there -- but otherwise, you'll
need to enter the actual chamber.

Re: Restart option -- a find-in-file search with N++ says the option's not in the setting files, period. Really wish I could help, but I'm clueless.

I wonder if i play the same Dungeon Crawl as everyone else.
Do that much people get the 15 runes and the Orb "effortless" ?
So some people have found a smart way to use Apportation so they could get the Orb without exactly entering the last room and face those 4 orb guardians jumping on them at the same time ?
So what, wasn't that enough that monsters do not play by the same rules as the players, having their damages and spells more efficient than player version ?
Wasn't that enough already that luck has a very strong influence on your character survival ?
Wasn't it enough that hunger and out of depth monsters prevent player to grind XP in a game that actually have the character needing XP to survive later monsters ?

After the slime pit acid splashing, those player AC nerfs and now let's make Zot even more dangerous than it is already, are the devs trying to transform Crawl into Nethack ?
Maybe next time they'll add random undetectable tiles that can kill the character when walked on like in Nethack.

That difficulty increase spiral just because there's a very few people apparently able to get 15 runes and the Orb consistently is plain silly.

And the best part is that if you can already get 15+orb easily, that small of a change won't matter to you.

I understand where they are coming from though. Perhaps some changes are in order. Apportation does up to say 50 units of weight, and a 4-5th lvl spell Yoink has no limit. That would stop you from using a 1st lvl spell to "game" the system.

They could just make Apportation not able to work on the Orb, it would have solved their problems with it.

Because adding those 2 statues that summon even more monsters than there is already in Zot:5 is making the whole thing even more difficult for non spellcasters characters.
Like if Zot:5 was not already very difficult for them.

Those are just regular statues. They don't do anything dangerous. They're there to make you have to walk into the orb chamber to apport it. Personally I think the real issue is apportion itself. It's a no-brainer to get apportion if you can.

Anyways, you guys are free to join the development wiki to voice any concerns or ask why changes were made. I too think the game is getting power spiral'd a little bit, but that's not too bad actually. Crawl is a very easy roguelike... relatively speaking of course.

Remember that the lack of features from 0.6 to 0.7 was because 0.7 was made in a month to get it released in time for the tournament. The next version will probably have a shitload of changes to various things to help the player.

Just making Apportation not work on the orb would make a lot of sense. It's the Orb. Not subject to your petty magics. Putting statues there just seems so arbitrary. Gamey. The bridge is broken and you must save the princess before it is fixed. There is a grumpy old man in the way and he won't move until you go elsewhere and do something completely unrelated. The stairs are broken and the only way up is with a hookshot. An obstacle not explained by the plot, its only purpose to keep inquisitive minds from sequence breaking. I am now imagining some dungeon engineer with his yellow plastic hat noting the inadequate security of the orb room, and putting some statues to the way so that visitors can still see the attraction but not call it to themselves by magic. He would have wanted walls, but the marketing department insisted on leaving the thing visible.

And the devs want to make Zot:5 feel less trivially easy? Huh. Well, maybe if the game before it was less hard, I might one day see the easy part.

Ah these are decorative statues only there to artificially hide line of sight to the Orb ?
That change everything, as usually when we mention statues it's always those dangerous ones, that's less insane than i thought it would be, as non spellcasters would need to go to the Orb anyways, line of sight open or not.

Though making the Orb just nearly immune to Apportation would have not needed to add any statue and would have prevented the Apportation spell usage that seems to be a problem for the developers.

I'm new to this, and just had my first try at picking a god. Running a Deep Elf Conjurer i came across a spellcasting god's altar. Forgot the name (where can i look up my old chars? Can i, even?) of it, but the description said the god liked people lvling up spellcasting.
ran around, went down 2 more lvls and blasted lots of stuff with spells. Got 2 lvls of spellcasting, but never any message of the god being pleased by it. Prayers were ignored.

Sooo... is this god working? I only know Trog so far :P he likes smashing stuff and sacrifices, and tells you about it any time it happens, so i was expecting some more feedback from this new god i picked.
