I must suck terribly. The lowest I've EVER been in 100 deaths is like level 10 or so. >S

Level 10 is not bad at all.

Certainly 90% of my non-wizard and non-save scummed game usually end with the death of my character before reaching level 8.

Anyways, always using the wizard mode, after the human paladin reached level 27 and had very good equipment (reached even 40 AC at a time), confident in some good cleaning flame and summon angel from Shiny One, with his very good divine wrath powered sword and a very good fire sword, i decided to  get into the Zot realm that i never explored before (as usually i give up wizard mode way earlier).

And honestly considering how insanely difficult i found the game in the last floor of the Zot realm, i doubt i will ever have the chance to explore it in a regular (i mean non wizard mode) game :D

I think the main problem is that i had the bad luck to meet much dragons and draconians in Zot, and  my previously prepared 8 teleportations scrolls and 6 Blink scrolls have been already -all- burned down by the various kind of fire dragons and demons threw at me in there.

So once i reached the last Zot floor, i had no teleportation way, i remembered i had dropped a teleportation giver item long time ago to deal with encumbrement and didn't remembered where, so i couldnt even get out to take it and come back.
So note for later : never ever drop a teleportation item, even if you think you have enough scroll, remember "fire meets scrolls" is no good for scrolls

Dealing with the Orb Guardians was no small feat, those things are hard to solo despite the high end paladin i had at this point, they even killed him once or twice when they caught him in the open and with their extreme insane speed surrounded him before he could reach any kind of corridor to narrow the fight (without even counting those fire orb that threw so much fire that even if i got a few teleport/blink scroll left, i would have ended with only ashes).

Anyways, entered in the final Zot Orb room, fetched the item and proceeded to run away using the cleaned parts of the temple in direction of the stairs.
Noticed a lot of demons were appearing out of thin air, and finally when i reached the last room before the stairs, this is what was waiting for me :

With no teleport/blink item and scrolls that's not exactly the best of the situations, reminded me of the room full of those nearly unkillable titanic and enormous slimes i took a screenshot previously in Pandemonium.

Cleansing Flame is sure usefull, killed tons of those, but with the various summoners in this room (even a Pandemonium Lord ! ) every killed monster was replaced nearly immediately.
And to not make things easier, my character was under the effect of some heavy slow spell.

I don't know exactly how much time i spent just to reach the exit from that room, but easily at least 10 minutes despite it was just a few tiles away, and of course died a lot there.
Ah if only i had a few teleport/blink ready, damn the hundred of dragons from previous floors that burned them all. :D

At least this run would have showed me that going with a paladin character and not counting on spells will never allow me to get the orb in a regular game, can't count how much time he died in Abyss, Pandemonium and Zot.

One thing you can do is hit t twice to shout. You can draw the Orb Guardians/whatever out slowly if you shout from far away.

Also, by the end of the game, everybody stops using scrolls entirely (they burn) and starts using either Teleportation spells or a wand of teleportation.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

Didn't thought about this. That would have made things a bit easier, as out of the Zot temple in the screenshot, there was this nice corridor going to the left leading to the stairs.

Oh, i didn't knew that.
Thanks, will certainly come in handy for the next time i drop something i would like to get back.

Now, how good is the "speed" mod? to me it seems fairly useless when compared to the others (particularily poison, draining, vampiric, chaos, or distortion. In that order)

Speed increases your DPS the most on average. Vampiric doesn't increase the damage you do (not saying it's bad or anything, but speed is better); chaos can randomly heal, berserk, haste, banish, and other effects you don't want; most late-game enemies rPois; and draining decreases the exp you gain from the foes you kill.

Speed is the best brand in the game. Venom becomes useless very quickly and Chaos is worthless, unless you're trying to entertain Xom. Draining and Distortion are best on super-fast weapons, like short swords.

edit: darn you Mr.Person! *shakes fist*

Draining makes a fight easier by reducing a monster's HD, but you get less XP per kill. Distortion is great for staying alive in battle, if nothing else.. Vampiric weapons are mainly used by species with healing problems. I liked making them dance, since those weapons heal themselves, but Tukima's Dance isn't too useful anymore.

Thanks from the input.

I dont know. I am getting mileage out of this short sword of speed I found on L1. It's just that I am happier when I find a dagger of poison or draining, and can fell far stronger enemies with ease.

Then again, I curse in frustration when I fall to a kobold that had a dagger of poison or draining. And since atm I am playing a vampire assasin, the poison aspect is not as important, having a blowgun.

In the early game, I too would like to see a dagger of venom rather than a dagger of speed. The venom brand will make the early game a breeze. Speed isn't that great a brand for already fast weapons anyways since there's a cap to how fast they can go. That cap is the reason quick blades can't have the speed brand, by the way, since they're already as fast as weapons allow. Of course, your skills make you attack faster, but that's another issue.

Speed's just a great all-around brand that works on every enemy in the game you melee. Other brands might situationally do more damage, but who wants to carry around a bunch of weapons "just in case"?

Does anyone know the reasoning behind making the slime pits stupidly hard? Because that's what it is. Stupid. And hard.

Since when can electric eels SHOOT electricity.
Well, yay for more experience. One day I'll have enough to actually beat the game.

It's to make you feel better about pouring Drano® into your sink so maybe you'll do it more often.

Wouldn't want an out-of-depth slime popping into your household now would you?  Nooo, gotta nuke the bastards where they squirm!  Have at thee!

I wouldn't say it's stupid, but it is way too hard. The poor devs got caught by power-creep. Don't worry, they're planning on nerfing loot in portal vaults to counter power creep. To be fair, some of the portal vaults DO have ridiculous loot, but I think the real problem is that some of the branches are just too fucking hard for the amount of loot they provide. I'm looking at Tomb and Slime in particular here.
