I dislike the distortion unwield effects, myself. If I was a game dev, I would remove them. I don't mind an item that sends you to the Abyss on command, I just dislike the fact it's a weapon people use as a tool. The Crawl DevTeam dislikes weapons you use as tools, that's why randarts weapons can no longer invoke for invisibility or levitation.

There's talk of redoing all the misc items so they have a function you can use over-and-over and a one-shot effect that consumes the item. I'd love to have an item that can take me into the Abyss (or Pand) as many times as I want, but lets me escape at the price of the item.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

The problem with those distorting brand is that they are a pain to use regularly (sometime i wonder if i am not helping the monsters when i hit him with such weapon ...) as not only it can teleport a monster in a room in which he will have allies, and if unlucky you may even lose the XP the monster would have given to you as it could be banished to abyss by your hit.

That's a weapon then that you want to use very few time (mostly when forced to face monster that cornered you, knowing those are monsters you can't defeat at your level), not everytime as because of the XP you would have missed because of this weapon banishment/teleportation, you would be too backward in term of XP and levels to even think of surviving later floors and branches.

And for a weapon you can only use a few time, the damage/self banishment potential when unwielding it is way too much a penalty, as the weapon is already half a penalty in itself (as you will not get as much XP as you could when lots of your hit will cast a monster in the abyss, out of your reach) if you decide to use it.

Can I just say, this strategy looks absolutely unbelievably awesome.  Not that I'll ever be able to use it.

Also, this gnoll fortress is the best thing that ever happened to any of my transmuters.  You can fill up your potion supplies on them, get lots of xp from the easy fights and, if you're bored, drown whole groups of gnolls in the moat (I got the idea after one stumbled 10 squares from my chokepoint and managed to drown itself).

Extension is going to get axed, according to my sources. A bit of a shame, but they'll probably add some more good stuff to replace it.

I dunno... that strategy does look powerful, but it requires a lot of preparation (a shower of gifts from Sif Muna, I'd say) and training.  Eh, as I say, it's not like I'll ever be in a position to use it :P.

Also - I finally have the mythical bladehands.  It's basically ZOMGWTFPWNAGE for a very short period of time, as far as I can tell.

Although I am having trouble with Sith piety... I guess I need to spam more spells.

Sif piety is gained by training your magical skills, so you need xp. I'm not sure how it works, but your best bet is to find a type of magic you don't have trained, like divination, and train that.

Distortion is awesome. A back stab with a distortion dagger is extremely powerful. There was a guy who managed to win while being stuck with a distortion weapon the entire game. It was epic. The dagger saved him several times, even against Cerebov!

Can I just say, this strategy looks absolutely unbelievably awesome.  Not that I'll ever be able to use it.

It's incredibly broken, even if you don't use it to the fullest extent. Deflect Missiles + Flight + Swiftness + Lich form for only 5 MP is godly. That article doesn't mention that Extension has no downsides anymore in 0.6.  If you have an amulet of stasis you can use Haste freely with Extension.  8)

This article has a few cool strategies and tips as well. By the way, does anyone have any tips for a newbie?

Well, this game has been mean to me too many times.  If I happen to find extension and a bunch of booster spells this game, I'm using 'em :P.

Incidentally, this transmuter is doing awesomely.  Blade hands are amazing, but not as good as Ice Form for most purposes, it seems.  And judging from how easily I just killed 2 black mambas, the Snake Pit is gonna be a joke.

Also, using awesome spells all the time means that Sif Muna now likes me a lot more.  That and the amulet of faith.  Yay.

Newbie tips, eh? Well, my life expectancy was noticeably lengthened after I learned to keep some track of all the shit I'm carrying and use it when expedient. Which is something I still botch up every now and then. I'm all "well, I can probably take this thing without using wand charges", and then I'm either dead, or alive and weighted down by my pile of wands that don't work on the deeper monsters I'm facing now.

Wait.

Ice Form can beat a hydra senseless in a few rounds, and cut off its retreat.

Newbie tips: Practice. You'll eventually get better. I don't know what I do different now but I just happen to live longer.

I find that just knowing what's dangerous and about how threatened I am got me down much further. I've also gotten farther just by stopping what I'm doing when I'm likely to die and looking at all my options.

ZOMG!! I just survived my first trip to the abyss! (not including the times I died or started in it)

My heart is actally beating hard, there was a horde of demons on my tail, one even followed me out.

And THAT is why you don't unwield a mace of distortion.
