I suppose Kiku's Corpse Delivery Service could also be used for distilling potions if you happened to need some.

Not to mention that the delivery service quite often provides rotting, large, and frequently rot-causing corpses, resulting in more powerful bombs.  You can even distill the essence from mutagenic corpses for a slightly less risky potion of mutation (at least, I think it's less risky).  I wonder what happens if you evaporate a potion of mutation...

According to the potion guide, it can evaporate into anything, with a strong chance of miasma, poison, fire, or cold.

right click on the potions while playing a transmuter (or a char with evaporate, I guess) to find out what does each potion do.

BTW: monsters stay confused longer than you do. So evaporating a confusion potion point blank is an effective escape method, even if you dont have confusion/poison resistance

So I'm trying out a vampire monk.

How do you handle your blood management?
Drink as much as possible?
Drink nothing?
Situational?

As a vampire in a stealthy class I go bloodless or as close to bloodless as I can unless I really need to heal. You can sneak up on and kill most things pretty easily.

Vampsassins rock.

Meh, transmuter ghosts are the weakest. They can't use Evaporate because they don't have potions, they can't use Sticks to Snakes because they don't have sticks and they can't change shape because they're undead.

If you knew Evaporate then the ghost just casts Mephitic Cloud.

I just had a strong transmuter die at the hands of a strong stalker's ghost.

Which means that the next bone file encounter will be even tougher.

I am considering playing some throwaway character to go down there, then quit, in order to avoid reinforcing the bones file

Go into your Crawl directory. There'll be a Saves folder with a bunch of "bones.xxx" files. Delete those and all your ghosts are dead. Make them read-only and your ghosts will never go away.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

When you can, bottle EVERY corpse you come across. That way, if you need to heal, you can chug one or two instead of wasting potions, assuming you are out of combat. Also, don't be afraid to go back. DL1 isn't a bad choice to head back to if you need to get some blood and wait out bloodless again.

Ok, thak you.

So you don't seem to have much possiblities to identify stuff, unlike in Nethack.
Or am I missing something?

I don't understand. What are you trying to identify?

Scroll? Read it.
Potion? Drink it.
Ring/Amulet? Wear it.
Weapon? Fight with it.
Armor? Put it on.

Or waste a scroll of ID on them.

Well from my experience with other rougelikes, wearing unidentified equipmet can end quite deadly.
And reading scrolls is useless most of the time, only few ge identified.

Well you can always play it safe and use scrolls of ID once you find some.

Up to you really. There aren't many ways to ID items other than use or scroll of ID

Meh, this game is not nearly as deadly as Nethack. Cursed stuff is bad, but it's not going to make you suddenly drop dead... probably.

Dungeon Crawl is much more balanced toward letting the player having fun without always being annoyed by stupid deaths (that are usually breaking your fun) regarding unidentified object or even cursed objects that are going to kill you 50% of the time in most rogue like, have a lot more counters and are much much less lethal as you have always ways to survive.

Nearly most of the time, you're not going to die from bad luck in regards to testing potions (unless you drink a poison potion at level 1 without any healing potion in stock, your organism will never counter the potion before your few hit points will be out).
Usually never try potions at level 1 anyways, while scrolls are much harmless.

Usually, if you have no identify scrolls and want to drink potions try to drink the ones you have in higher number first, usually in the dungeon you'll mostly find more positive potions than negative ones.
For the potion i have in small quantity and don't want to waste identify scrolls on them (better keep those for the items in my opinion) , wait until you are at high level, you should have health , and hopefully enough positive potion to counter the bad ones.

Most of the scrolls are not developers  jokes made to kill the player, i met very few immolation scrolls by example and most of the time i had enough health to not die, most of the bad scrolls you'll find are more about cursing your equipment, and you hould be able to find many remove curse scroll.

That's exactly why i love it, and ceased playing nethack by example.

Though be very cautious , as rotting, badly mutating can be very annoying if you don't have any counter potions, and poisonning yourself when drinking one at low level without any health potion in the inventory

Also, unlike nethack, scrolls, potions, and wands are weighted VERY strongly by depth. Yes, you may find an immolation scroll on level 1, but that is about as common as a dragon on level 1.
