Hey, I haven't played many mage-type characters. Whats a good pick to start with them and some decent spells I should learn?

Wizard (fire) gets spammals and blink. Fire elementalist gets conjure fire for the hallway block and sticky flame for DoT.

Elves or spriggans, if it's your first mage.

Spriggan mages will get some severe food problems in later game. High elves are good with magic, and not too shabby in combat. Deadly with bows. Deep elves are REALLY good at magic, and not much else. Vampires are below average, but can cheerfully ignore spell hunger, if that becomes an issue.

Deep Elf Fire Elementalists (DEFE) are meant to be overpowered. My best character was one of those so I suppose there could be some truth to that.. I think a Deep Elf Fire Conjurer would be the easiest to learn because the fire spell you can learn has such a large range.

Sludge Elf Transmuters have a lot more staying power than most other, so they're a good choice for someone coming from more melee-oriented characters. Plus Ice Form is really cool, thanks to it's poison resistance I've been using the Hive as a snack bar, and Snake gets a lot easier too. For everything else, there's Blade Hands. First level is kinda tricky, but after you get Evaporate it's smooth sailing. But basically, all spells in your starting book are worth learning early on, unless you find a book with Blink or something like that (I'd ditch Sticks to Snakes).

I've wanted to make a game like this for a long time. Maybe now I don't have to..

Can you actually poison things? I.e if I have a poison potion and a load of darts, can I make them poisoned?

Nope. Only way to poison stuff with a poison potion is to evaporate it for a 3x3 poisonous cloud.

Yeah, ADOM allows you to dip things into potions/fountains/etc.

Cool mechanic.

Yeah, transmuters in general are tougher than most other mages, in general. You dont start with any offensive spells, but get a nice HtH bonus. And as soon as you hit level two, you get vaporize potion (multipurpose area of effect spell) and sticks to snakes (a very useful, if short lived, summon spell. Good as chaff to get away, or to kill the monsters you have previously dazed with a confusion cloud)

PD: the problem with necromancers/death knights is that their initial spell assortment SUCKS. Skeletons are too weak, and harms hurts you as well as your target. What's worse, it can be resisted EASILY. In fact, most of the spells in your first book are nigh useless. Whoever said the dark side was easier was a fool.

Dunno, I think Vampiric Draining is pretty sweet. And Dispel Undead is *the* anti-ghost spell (ghosts are the scariest monsters IMO, summoner ghosts doubly so), but I guess it's not useful all that often.

I am not saying that necromancy doesnt have useful spells, just that starting off as a necro/death knight is particularily tough, as you lack any decent spells early on. The soonest you can get vampiric draining is level 3, IIRC, and it's not that good to begin with (close range, not too damaging...). Zombie spam is quite sweet, but you have to be at least level 4 (5 if you took raise skeleton, which is a must-have for early  survival, bad as it is), and you have to get the corpses somehow, obviously. I got there right now, but mostly because of blind luck (right after spawning I stumbled upon a sabre of draining)

OK, is this a bug or what? I'm a level 8 vampire enchanter, it said I can bottle blood, when I mouseover a corpse it says that shift + lclick is bottling blood, but when I try to do it I just chop up the corpse into meat chunks. Stone Soup 0.6.0.0
