I believe not even magic will allow a vampire without blood to regenerate. The spell doesn't even work, and the ring does nothing.

Trog really is a very good choice for trolls.  There are few things more frightening than a berserking troll, and Trog can see to it that you carve your way through veritable hordes of orcs and gnolls with his ability to sustain your rage over longer periods.  And the Hand of Trog ability makes an already fearsome regeneration become downright insane.  Furthermore, trolls will never, ever have a use for spellbooks, so there's nothing to lose from torching them.  And Trog's abilities don't cost MP, which is excellent since trolls have absolutely abysmal MP and intelligence scores.

However, Trog's gifts don't usually do a whole lot of good for trolls, as most trolls will just use their hands to carve their way through most things.  You can try training up your ability to club stuff, but as with any other sort of trollish skill beyond unarmed combat, it's going to be an uphill battle.  You may want to switch over to clubs later on anyways, for various reasons.

Unfortunately, Trog likes sacrificed corpses, and as a troll you'll probably be eating a fair portion of them.  In some infested places like the orc mines you should have enough bodies to spare sacrificing a number of them, but you're still not going to be able to offer up as much as other, less hungry races.

Trog isn't the only choice for trolls, however.  If you're willing to go a slightly trickier route, Nemelex Xobeh can offer some magical diversity for your trolls with card gifts.  You'll be able to get lots of destruction or escape decks due to mass weapon/armor sacrifice, but summoning decks will likely be few and far between.  I think Nemelex's abilities might cost some MP however, but they're not exactly necessary.  Getting evocations up to a respectable level will be utter torment, but it does give your troll a bit more versatility.

A slightly more off-the-beaten-path choice would actually be Kikubaaqudgha.  Although Kiku is primarily geared towards necromancers, non-spellcasters can get some interesting gifts from him as well.

First of all, protection from torment is always nice to have, and Kiku is one of the best for that.  Second, Kiku doesn't care about corpses, he only wants stuff to die. This is perfect for a troll, as you get to keep the little munchies all for yourself.  Third, at higher piety levels Kiku will cast torment for you if you pray over a body.

Now, let's just think about that for a bit...  Can you imagine dragging a corpse down into the orcish mines, and then shredding the orcs down there with a god-sent torment that you are shielded from?  And now instead of being a weakling spellcaster, you're a sodding troll, and you're far more than willing to capitalize on the now-weakened state of the nearby fleshbags.

Kiku also has one very interesting ability that was designed to help necromancers but can actually give a unique and highly valuable boost to trolls.  At higher piety levels, you can call upon Kiku to send a number of corpses (size and number dependent on invocations) to your location.

Normally, trolls are hindered from even thinking about going into certain food-scarce areas that are filled with demons, undead and other corpseless nasties.  With this ability, you can just call on Kiku when times are rough and he'll grant you a nice snack to keep you going.  The piety cost is a bit nasty, but with any luck you should be able to slaughter enough stuff to restore it by the time your hunger runs down again.  Do note, however, that the corpses provided are random and potentially harmful...  Kobolds, necrophages, brain worms and more have popped up in corpse piles.  While you may get the occasional giant to chow down on, this ability is by no means a certainty.  Higher invocations levels will up the number of corpses, thus increasing your odds of finding something tasty.

Kikubaaqudgha can also grant a permanent pain brand to a weapon, but this really isn't very useful for a troll.

Beyond that...  Well, Cheibriados can help you out a bit.  Trolls can't wear most armor, so the ponderousness brand can help give you some defensive help.  Che will also slow your metabolism and give you some powerful magical abilities that can shred certain monsters, but his abilities tend to have a rather high MP cost.

Elyvilon isn't much help with her healing (you've already got that pretty much covered), but damage shielding is always nice and she can help cleanse your system when you eat something particularly nasty.  Also, you'll be able to sacrifice plenty of weapons for her due to your "hands-on" approach to things.  Also also, neutrality to holy beings is pretty dang nice in some situations.  Invocations skill is kinda necessary though, which can be problematic.

Jiyva can give you some nice mutations and abilities, and you won't be as reliant on items as other species so there'll be more stuff for the jellies to chow down on.  Stat shifting can potentially be dangerous though.

EDIT:  Makhleb wouldn't be that great, as all his abilities rely on invocations and MP, two areas that trolls are fabulously bad at.  Makhleb works for characters who want some spell-like abilities, but are still allowed to wear very heavy armor (which really isn't an option for trolls anyways).  And, again, the corpse sacrificing issue.

I finally had a character get well established. He was a mummy necromancer of Sif Muna. I lucked out and got Twisted Resurrection from my first gifted spellbook, and from then on went everywhere with a half dozen or so large abomination bodyguards, more if I could get them. Damn that was fun.

Finally had my abominations stomped by a pack of ogres and some named mercenary type. I won through, only to be killed by a giant soon afterward.

Previously I went Nemelex with my Troll, which was good until I drew a card of Torment and blasted myself right before a battle with a powerful enemy.

I tried troll knights of Makhleb a couple of times, and they seemed pretty okay. MP reserves are irritatingly low, but the Minor Destruction gives a nice, cheap way of grinding invocations up. Since Makhleb likes killing as well as corpses, getting piety up is just a matter of time, although restoring it after using the bigger abilities will probably prove a hassle. You do get enough corpses to spare some for Makhleb every now and then, and it gives something to do with the poisonous and otherwise nasty ones. The kill-healing didn't do much for a troll.

Now I'm playing a troll chaos knight of Xom, and doing surprisingly well. I just got a +9 rod of destruction. I have no idea if a troll is capable of effectively using it, but I'm liking the "+9" part.

EDIT: Heh, spoke too soon. Not a minute after I posted this, I got overwhelmed by enemies and died while trying to retreat.

Trog's Trolls! Don't forget, spellbooks make great land mines/grenades.
Throw a spellbook, making sure to set it not to go further if it misses, (or drop it and walk a space away) and then use your Trog power to make it explode.

Aim at the tile, not the creature. I can't remember the key to do that though...

Sigmund had annoyed me during one of my latest run, blasting one of my character from afar.

I decided to actually set as a goal Sigmund death.
After failing to find him in a few short lived games, i made a Demigod Hunter that surprised me by how usefull his bow was (and finding a very nice dwarven sabre that i enchanted to +4 helped a lot), being able to kill a few Ogre with his arrows (some nice arrows i found on the floor).

Anyways, the point is that at floor 2 i encountered Sigmund.
No way i could take him (i was only level 2), i decided to run away and get a few levels before going to him.
During the dungeon crawling, i even encountered Edmund, his brother on floor 5.
After filling his body with a few arrow and noticing it seemed to not disturb him that much, i understood it was too early for me to fight Edmund, so i continued on my way.

I found a confusion rod few time after that and decided it was time for payback as i reached level 6.
Edmund was found again, running at me, poor evil guy that i kept confused while filling him with enough +4 arrows to get him dead.
One down, one to more go.

After a few more dungeon crawling, during which i even had fun in engaging a few centaurs in a bow duel, and won each time (those demigod hunters are good), my character reached level 8.

Began to climb back to the floor 2 in which i encountered Sigmund not far from where i left him.
Thanks to the rod of confusion, i kept him away from blasting me with whatever lucky magic or rod he could have, and filled his body with several poisonned arrows i found on a lower floor.
It was the end for Sigmund, and a triumph for my demigod hunter mission.

I had not the heart to let a character that completed his mission successfully die in this insane dungeon, and decided to let him get out of it alive.

Been doing random wanderers latley, and I rolled a Spriggan with a +2/+3 crossbow.
It was like bullet time until I ran out of bolts, so I'm like "it's stabbing time".
But the way I play these wanderers is "first altar I find I have to take up the religion.(Or randomly choose one if I find the temple.)

First altar I find?  TSO.

It's post-modern art. It's useless, it looks weird, but it's worth a lot of money.
Plus, with an elephant, you really only need to caulk a couple places. They start out pretty watertight.

I decided to try a random wanderer too. The game gave me a deep dwarf. I am now level 7, and just reached the Temple. I think I'll probably take Makhleb, for the kill-healing. Elyvilon is the other possibility.

No.

No no no.

I finally get to the temple, and it DOES NOT CONTAIN AN ALTAR OF MAKHLEB.

MAKHLEB IS NOT REPRESENTED IN THE TEMPLE.

WORSHIPPERS OF MAHKLEB MUST GO ELSEWHERE FOR THEIR ALTAR NEEDS.

So, yeah. I guess I'll go with the god of healing. Health for the Health God?

If he isn't in the temple, I've heard it should be somewhere in the top 9 levels.

Yeah, but I don't want to have to search the top nine levels for an altar. I really have no idea what I'm doing, and need a semi-reliable method of healing, fast. Eh, maybe I should look around a bit, and retreat back to temple and choose the Healer if I run into trouble.

EDIT:
Haha! Yeah, it was worth it! The Makhleb altar is right next to the temple! Excellent! >:]
