I think it'd be cool if there was some way you could reliably acquire certain mutations at some point in the game.
Would be cool indeed, one of my trolls became a vegetarian because of a mutation, maybe the worst mutation a troll can "gain" in Crawl :D

It would be nice if mutations were "easier" to come by. Maybe not to the point of nethacks intrinsic hunting, but maybe closeish. Eating poisonous corpses might give you poison resist mut at like a 2% rate, giant bats give flight at .5%. Heck, just make mutations more common. I can't say I've ever gotten more then one mutation if I didn't worship Xom, and 90% of games I don't get any.

Ustxu Iceraped the Frigid Crystal of Slaughter was a glacier titan. It was the only one of its kind. A gigantic feathered carp composed of crystal glass. It has five mouths full of treacherous teeth, enormous clear wings, and ferocious blue eyes. Beware its icy breath! Ustxu was associated with oceans, glaciers, boats, and murder.

I think muations are fun like they are now, some bad, some good. usually you get a lot of bad mutations with glows when you are miscasting or using haste and invisibility, otherwise i like to drink all the mut potions and eat mut corpses, just for the fun, but notice that i just don give a fuck about the orb, i play mostly for the caracter build and the loot looking for the ultimate char.
also also i started doing this since the 2 time i scaped with the orb, before that i was all serius.

i found a reliable character for dungeon sprint :D

Hmmm..
Someone tell me how to make it animate the autoexplore on online servers. I want to play there, but can't find the option to do this.

Could be lack of bandwidth. I think it usually shows me autoexploring.

For mutations, I was thinking like some late-ish game plot event. You get a choice of a bunch of nifty mutations from the Lady of the Lake or some shit like that.

I've never gotten anywhere near the orb, I just don't have the patience to proceed carefully and meticulously enough to not get myself in stupidly dangerous situations.

Jiyva, the Slime god, will quite frequently give you a batch of mutations.  Unlike Xom, these mutations are almost always beneficial, but they still might not be hugely helpful.

However, while you do get a lot of mutations and they're all good, you don't get to hold onto them for very long.  Jiyva is never really content with the way you are, and will wipe clean the last mutation pack he/she gave you in order to grant you the newest one.

With Jiyva, you have to be able to play with a very versatile character...  Due to the random selection of mutations and the fact that J.J. will shuffle your stats around with disturbing frequency, you need to be able to adapt to your "new form" and play with changing tactics at any moment.

It's in config. Set "explore_delay" to some positive number, like 20.
Or is it "travel_delay"? Anyway, set something delay from -1 to 20.

On Jiyva: The important concepts were "reliable" and "choice". :) I haven't tried the slime god yet, but it could be fun. I should give it a shot the next time I see an altar.

Its the travel_delay one, justed tested it and 20 seems to work fine.

The most important ability of Jivya's is that you can safely loot Slime:6.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

There's that, and Slimify has its uses as well (but it's not fantastic).  There's also an innate "cure mutation" ability at high levels that you can activate that only targets "bad" mutations, and at max piety you get the mildly useful "jelly shield", which causes random high-level slimes to spawn whenever you suffer a particularly nasty hit.

You also become naturally nonthreatening to all slimes and eyes.  Furthermore, you can sometimes get jellies to freeze in their tracks for a few moments so you can snag some item they were about to munch on.  However, this carries a surprisingly large piety cost, and worshiping Jiyva will give you a reason to use this more often than otherwise (a neutral red jelly will naturally spawn on every level you occupy so it can start Hoovering up all the dungeon-floor detritus).  Piety is relatively simple to gain though, but it doesn't go up as quickly as you might hope.

All in all, Jiyva is the go-to god if you want to have some seriously nice mutation sets.  You'll get your ever-changing pack of Jiyva-granted muts, but you'll also have the mutations that you acquire through other means (so far as I know, Jiyva leaves these alone).  With the way the Cure Mutation ability works, you can freely chow down on all sorts of mutagenic stuff and then filter out the bad stuff afterwards.

...but that's really all Jiyva is good for.  Don't count on any of the other abilities to get you through the rough times.

All my troll characters are finding rings of sustenance within the first four floors.
What do you think the best god for a troll is?

Speaking of rings, is a ring of regeneration on a vampire as awesome as it sounds? It would remove the main penalty for going bloodless, and just leave the resistances and huge stealth bonus.

How would Makhleb work for a troll? Trolls are certainly not going to be casting many spells, and Makhleb gives some nice conjuration and summoning substitutes. You'll probably find enough corpses to have some spares to donate, even with the fast metabolism. Now that I think of it, I really haven't played trolls. At all, really. Going to try it now.
